Henrik Moeller, Chongqing NRGE Power Solutions Co. Copper and the Green Future (in China)

The main drivers in china s green development Political direction Industry drivers Sensible application of Copper in China s green drive Outlook: 10 and 20 years

World production of Copper 1900 to Today Source: Wikipedia

Key Copper Production locations worldwide Source: Wikipedia

Copper prices Source: Wikipedia

The main drivers in china s green development Hydro power Continuous development of new hydro power projects Wind energy Doubling of the current output Bio Mass The new fast growing trend Solar Power Coming from behind Automotive industry Hybrid and electrical cars

Hydro power Currently supplying approx 200 Gwh Plan for 2020 is to reach over 430 Gwh Total feasible power generation from Hydro power is estimated to be around 800 Gwh Trend away from Mega dams like The 3 Georges Dam to smaller solutions Demand for high efficiency turbines is increasing

Wind energy End 2010 total installed 45 Gwh of Wind Power capacity Estimated to reach Gwh in 2015 Estimated to reach Gwh by 2020 (13 times more than The 3 Georges) Replacing the need for 150 million tons of coal cutting CO2 emission by 410 million tons Installing one new wind turbine per hour 24 / 7 Demand for high efficiency turbines increasing The Wind Farms need even more copper for the interconnection as well as connecting to the grid Typical requirement of copper is about 2 mt per megawatt (turbine and grounding)

Automotive industry The future seems to be in electrical powered cars Intermediary there will be generations of hybrid cars An average car in china contains 15 kilo of copper A hybrid car has between 30 and 55 kilo Pure electrical cars rely on copper for efficient power generation see Tesla The current trend toward electrical powered cars will increase the demand in the automotive industry from currently to mt annually to mt (estimated)

Solar Power Still at a small scale Although china is the world largest producer of solar panels only 5 % is being utilized on the home market Currently 900 Mwh capacity installed Expected to have 10 Gwh installed by 2015 Solar panels, more than wind farms, require high efficient power cables for interconnection 6 x higher requirement than wind farms The industry has been given a boost by the new feed in price for electricity gained (Yuan 1,15 per kwh)

Bio Mass Bio mass is currently mainly being used to produce ethanol In the future more local bio mass / bio waste generation will take place In farming for example Pigs farms producing more than pigs annually are required to have digester for producing Bio Gas (subsequently electricity) Currently only 3 % have implemented this The future will see many small electricity generating plants working with Bio Waste for own or local (agricultural areas) Two large scale plants have been initiated but so far there are still issues with feeding to the grid

Political Drivers Current 5 year plan Older initiatives

Industry Divers In order to increase business volume Large energy users have to implement energy efficient technologies as they face restrictions on their power usage The renewable energy sector has to deliver the produced energy most efficiently thus needing efficient turbines and efficient power transmissions Wind and water turbines with copper rotors bring the most efficient output The car industry has to use the electricity which they can store in the current and future generations of batteries as efficiently as possible again no way around copper currently

Sensible application of Copper in China s green drive Copper has it greatest advantages in: Power generation (turbines) Any generators that has to generate power from electricity or to convert power into electricity works the most efficient with copper High return in terms of efficiency Power transportation (cables) The loss power is the lowest with copper cables and a smart grid can only be truly efficient using copper cables
