About the Master Builders Association of NSW Training Department The Master Builders Association of NSW (MBA) is Australia s largest industry association representing the residential building industry. The MBA looks after the interests of: small to medium size builders right through to commercial builders trade contractors design professionals kitchen and bathroom specialists large builders and land developers; and manufacturers and suppliers As a registered training organization (RTO number 6163), the MBA is committed to providing industry relevant training programs for the building industry. The MBA provides: training and assessment pathways to most building licensing qualifications for individuals continuing professional development (CPD) for its members and the building and construction industry information sheets on each training course/workshop If you want to know how the MBA can help you, please contact us on (02) Introduction to Certificate IV in Building and Construction This course is designed to enable potential builders and others in the industry to improve their business skills and technical knowledge so that they can successfully manage their business. The course covers the areas required for both national accreditation of the qualification and is also part of the licensing requirements of the Office of Fair Trading. Participants may complete the whole course in order to qualify for the Certificate IV, or can choose units that are critical skills gaps for themselves or their company to concentrate on one or more units. This self-paced program contains short both answer questions and assessment tasks. The questions reflect the 16 units required to complete the Certificate IV in Building and Construction (building) CPC40110 qualification. Participants are provided with relevant resources and access to an assessor five and a half days a week through phone and . Onsite assessments may be required with the participants requiring copies of additional material i.e. the BCA at their own expense. This qualification combines best practice theory with practical examples of workplace application..

Who is this for, What can you do with the Qualification once you have it, & Why do this This Certificate covers building theory and practice related to low-rise buildings and associated light steel structures. You ll develop specialist skills and knowledge in plan interpretation; building codes and standards; quantities take-off; estimating; scheduling; construction technology; occupational health and safety; site supervision; surveying; cost control; and financial business management. 4. Learning Outcomes This qualification is designed to meet the needs of builders, including selecting contractors, overseeing the work and its quality, and liaising with the client. The builder may also be the appropriately licensed person with responsibility under the relevant building licensing authority in the State or Territory. 5. Our expectations/minimum requirements Entry requirements to this Certificate include: completion of Year 11, construction related trade qualifications or current employment in the building industry or associated industries. Due to the high demand for this course and the limited number of places available, entry will be at the discretion of the course co-ordinators. The following criteria (in order) will be used to determine entry: 1. Qualified carpentry or bricklaying tradespersons. 2. Other qualified building tradespersons. 3. Persons currently employed in the building industry that require qualification for advancement. 4. Persons currently employed in building related industries 6. Process/Steps to follow in the MBA RPL Process Step 1 Provide information of your skills and experience Once registered and paid, your participant kit will be sent to you; and we ask that you provide as much information of your previous experience in the building and construction industry as you can. This is your first opportunity (and not the last) to provide proof of your variety of experience in the industry. Here you can supply examples of your work history which could include: brief CV or work history past project files certificates/results of assessment interstate/overseas certificates/results of assessment universities membership of relevant professional associations references/letters from previous employers/supervisors industry awards any building related licences

3 General Safety Induction (Construction Industry) Card (White Card) certificates/results of past assessments indentures/trade papers results/statement of attendance/certificates from training courses results/statement of attendance/ certificates in house courses, workshops, seminars, symposiums results/statements of attendance/ certificates club courses e.g. first aid, officials, surf life saving, etc Master Builders Association of New South Wales photographs/dvd s/videos of work undertaken work diaries/ task sheets /job sheets/ log books site training records site competencies held record hobbies/interests/special skills outside work site inductions any other documentation that may demonstrate industry experience Depending when and where in the building and construction industry you have worked, you may or may not have documentary evidence available. This should not deter you from seeking RPL as the Assessor will work with you during the RPL process. You will also need to supply contact details of one or two work referees who can confirm your skills and experience in the building and construction industry. Step 2 Conversation with Assessor An assessor will review the information you have provided (usually with you) and begin to match up your skills to the units/subjects in the qualification. At this point, you will have the opportunity to discuss and identify your previous experience with the assessor who will understand your industry experience and conduct a competency conversation with you. You will be required to answer high level building and construction industry related questions to identify your current skills. Step 3 Practical demonstration of your skills The assessor will conduct a practical skills test at your workplace (if appropriate) or at another suitable venue. This, again, is an opportunity to demonstrate your level of competence. This assessment will be focussed on skills that are required in the qualification. Your assessor will identify the skills that he/she will want you to demonstrate. Further steps After the assessment, your assessor will give you information about the skills that have been recognised and whether you have gained the full qualification. If you do have skill gaps, these may be addressed through flexible training.

5 7. Time frames Master Builders Association of New South Wales Previous participants have completed the questions and assessment tasks within 12 weeks which involved a commitment of hours per week. The program should be completed within a 2 year period avoid changes in legislation. 8. National Construction Code (BCA) Class 1 and Class 10 Buildings; Housing Provisions Volume 2 & Classes 2 to 9 Buildings Volume 1 (from ABCB website link) b.
