Don t Settle for just any Mercury Analyzer......Go with the Experts in Mercury Analysis...Go with Teledyne Leeman Labs Teledyne Leeman Labs offers both the technical expertise and products needed for your most demanding mercury analysis challenges When the concentration of mercury needs to be accurately measured, laboratories all over the world turn to Teledyne Leeman Labs for high performance solutions to their mercury analysis challenges. Since introducing the first fully automated mercury analyzer in the late 1980 s, Teledyne Leeman Labs has focused on advancing the analytical methodologies as well as detection technologies for mercury. Now, well over two decades later, we have both the applications expertise and the products needed to meet even the most demanding mercury analysis challenges. Today, our mercury products cover a broad range of techniques including cold vapor atomic absorption (CVAA), cold vapor atomic fluorescence (CVAF), direct solids analysis and mercury emissions monitoring. And, they all comply with EPA and international methods for the determination of mercury. Introducing the Hydra Series The Hydra Series is a family of fully automated instruments that address the analysis of liquids, solids and gases. The product line includes: Hydra II AA, Hydra II AF, Hydra-C and Hydra-C Appendix K Hydra II AA Where Performance and Productivity Meet Hydra II AA operates on the principle of cold vapor atomic absorption (CVAA) to provide the analyst with a 1 ppt detection limit as well as compatibility with an extremely wide range of sample matrices. Its high capacity autosampler, short analysis time, and over range protection system make the Hydra II AA a powerful laboratory productivity tool. Hydra II AF Sub ppt Detection and Wide Dynamic Range Hydra II AF operates on the principle of cold vapor atomic fluorescence (CVAF) and is available in two configurations. The first is the core Hydra II AF which provides a detection limit of 0.1 ppt and a dynamic range that extends to the high ppb level. For laboratories that require even lower limits of detection, the Hydra II AF Gold includes a gold amalgamation system to preconcentrate mercury and yield a limit of detection well below 0.05 ppt. Both configurations include a high capacity autosampler and over-range protection system to enhance productivity. Hydra-C Mercury Analysis With No Sample Prep! Hydra-C operates on the principle of thermal decomposition with atomic absorption detection to facilitate the direct analysis of solid or liquid samples. Hydra-C is designed to address the needs of analysts who want to use EPA method 7473 or who simply want to determine mercury without having to digest their samples. Hydra-C Appendix K is designed to measure Hg emissions from coal-fired power plants, as well as cement kilns and incinerators. It is compliant with 40 CFR, Part 75, Appendix K (Sorbent Trap Analysis Method). The Hydra II AF is capable of running samples in triplicate in about 1 minute, delivering a substantial improvement in productivity and in cost of analysis 2

Introducing the World s Most Sensitive Mercury Analyzers the Hydra II AF and Hydra II AF Gold In an effort to routinely achieve sub ppt levels of detection for mercury, analysts around the globe are turning to cold vapor atomic fluorescence (CVAF) instrumentation from Teledyne Leeman Labs. We offer two CVAF based instruments to meet your needs; the Hydra II AF and the Hydra II AF Gold. While the Hydra II AF and Hydra II AF Gold share a similar architecture (see Figures 1a and 1b) they are designed to address different methodologies and provide significantly different detection capabilities. The Hydra II AF, with its direct fluorescence detection, provides a detection limit of 0.1 ppt, a dynamic range of over five orders of magnitude and exceptional stability. This system is designed to meet the requirements of EPA Method and European Standard EN On the other hand, the Hydra II AF Gold, with its ability to preconcentrate mercury prior to analysis, is capable of achieving a detection limit well below 0.05 ppt and is fully compliant with EPA methods 1631E and as well as European Standards EN and EN Page 6 provides an overview of the benefits that are common to both the Hydra II AF and Hydra II AF Gold. Page 7 provides an overview of the benefits that are unique to the Hydra II AF Gold. Hydra II AF Hydra II AF Gold Figure 1a. Hydra II AF schematic diagram. Sample and reductant are pumped to the gas/liquid separator where mercury is reduced to metallic vapor. Argon carries mercury vapor through the 2-stage dryer while liquid is pumped to waste. With the Hydra II AF the mercury vapor proceeds directly to the fluorescence cell for detection in accordance with EPA Method and EN Figure 1b. Hydra II AF Gold schematic diagram. The Hydra II AF Gold uses the same process as the Hydra II AF for EPA Method as well as preconcentrating Hg on a gold amalgamation system prior to detection in accordance with EPA Method 1631E and EN The Clean Water Act requires that individual states achieve safe concentrations for many pollutants, including mercury in waters. The National Toxics rule defines the safe level for mercury as low as 1.3 ppt, about 200 times lower than the reporting limit for EPA method which uses Cold Vapor Atomic Absorption (CVAA). 5

Benefits found in both the Hydra II AF and Hydra II AF Gold ACHIEVE LOWER DETECTION AND REPORTING LIMITS Advanced Fluorescence Detection System. Both configurations of the Hydra II AF incorporate a proprietary wide angle fluorescence detector for the ultimate in sensitivity. This detector is designed with tangential gas flow for rapid equilibration and washout of Hg vapor; and further, it delivers a detection limit of 0.1 ppt without preconcentration and well under 0.05 ppt with preconcentration. RUN MORE SAMPLES WITH LESS LABOR High Capacity Autosampler. In an effort to free your analyst for other tasks during periods of high sample loading, the Hydra II AF employs a high capacity autosampler that holds up to 270 samples. Its 175 ml QC reservoirs ensure ample volume for continuing QC checks (e.g., CCV, CCB, OPR) during long sample runs. A wide variety of commercially available sample cups are supported to achieve maximum productivity and to ensure compatibility with your lab s digestion vessels. Calibration plot in direct fluorescence mode from 1 ppt to 100 ppb demonstrating a dynamic range in excess of 5 orders of magnitude. DON T GET DERAILED BY SAMPLES WITH HIGH MERCURY CONTENT Over-Range Protection. One consideration important to commercial testing labs is the potential for instrument contamination from samples with unexpectedly high concentrations of Hg. Such samples can wreak havoc on instruments without an over range protection system and can lead to long and expensive decontamination procedures. This is especially challenging for purge and trap instruments. Both the Hydra II AF and Hydra II AF Gold include over range protection. With the Hydra II AF, the instrument continually monitors the rate of change in signal for each new sample and then automatically predicts over-range conditions before system contamination can occur. With the Hydra II AF Gold, the system performs a brief prescreen of each sample without preconcentration and then allows further analysis only for those samples which are deemed safe (samples with concentrations below a user selectable set point). Smart Rinse. Hydra II AF also provides a smart rinse function which helps to ensure accurate measurements and is especially useful with the over-range protection mode mentioned above. RUN DIFFICULT SAMPLES WITHOUT COMPLICATIONS High Performance Gas/Liquid Separator. Hydra II s innovative, serpentine gas/liquid separator provides high throughput for routine samples, superior analytical recoveries for complex or poorly digested samples and exceptional resistance to contamination from difficult or foaming samples. The result is more robust operation, better data quality and increased productivity. Filtered Autosampler Probe. Hydra s filtered sample probe excludes particulates from the liquid stream to ensure the analytical robustness needed for long periods of unattended operation. ELIMINATE WATER VAPOR FOR BETTER STABILITY Method Compliant Vapor Dryer. Water vapor interferes with the measurement of Hg by atomic fluorescence. For this reason a high performance gas phase drying system is essential to instrument performance. EPA methods and 1631E each recommend specific gas phase dryers; soda lime for Method 1631E and counterflow Nafion for The soda lime dryer eliminates any condensation and protects the gold trap from haloacid vapors such as HCl or HBr. The membrane dryer then removes all traces of water vapor from the gas stream before it reaches the fluorescence cell. Hydra II incorporates both dryers delivering method compliance, long-term stability, and higher sensitivity. 6

Unique to the Hydra IIAF Gold HYDRA II REPORT MERCURY AT CONCENTRATIONS FROM SUB PPT TO HIGH PPB LEVELS With preconcentration the Hydra II AF Gold achieves a Method Detection Limit1 (MDL) of less than 0.05 ppt and easily satisfies the accuracy requirement of the sub ppt Report Limit1 standard in method 1631E; which is 0.5 ppt +/- 23%. MEET LOW DETECTION LEVELS WITH LESS SAMPLE The figure above shows the stability of an on-going precision and recovery standard (OPR) collected over an 8-hour working day. Method 1631E requires a 5 ppt OPR standard be analyzed with every batch of samples (20 maximum). AF Gold The exceptional sensitivity of Hydra II AF Gold allows it to meet the QC requirements of method 1631E using much less sample than was possible with earlier generation instruments. This means shorter analysis times (2-3 minutes per sample) as well as the ability to fit more samples (up to 180) into an automated run. The net result is superior productivity for today s busy laboratory. UNIQUE OVER-RANGE PROTECTION WITH PRECONCENTRATION Gold amalgamation and fluorescence detection systems of the Hydra II AF Gold COMPLY WITH BOTH EPA METHOD AND 1631E Not only is the Hydra II AF Gold compliant with all the hardware requirements of Methods 1631E and 245.7, it is also compliant with all the QC requirements of the methods. From its gold amalgamation trap and soda lime dryer to its software which automatically calculates System Blanks1 and Calibration Factors1, the Hydra II AF Gold provides the user with an ideal platform for performing low level Hg determinations. The Hydra II AF Gold offers a fast, simple over-range protection system to ensure your productivity. When the purge and trap approach is being used, over-range protection is accomplished by using the fluorescence system without preconcentration to perform a brief prescreen of each sample and then allowing further analysis only for those samples which are deemed safe (i.e. samples with concentrations below a user selectable set point). ON-SITE CERTIFICATION ASSISTANCE FOR METHOD 1631E. In addition to providing installation by a factory trained engineer, Leeman Labs offers an optional 1631E Certification Assistance program wherein an applications specialist will spend two days in your lab to assist your personnel in the subtleties of meeting the requirements of EPA method 1631E (this includes site evaluation and recommendations). Calibration Details. The Calibration display provides a choice of several calibration curvefits including EPA s required Calibration Factor (CF) algorithm. When the CF algorithm is chosen, the curve s quality control details appear including CF %RSD, System Blank concentration, and Report Limit recovery. 1 Method Detection Limit, Report Limit, System Blank and Calibration Factor are terms defined in EPA Method 1631E. 7

Intuitive Software Maximizing the Productivity of the Hydra II AF The operating software for the Hydra II Series is a no-nonsense package designed to maximize the productivity of Hydra II and your laboratory. It automates all aspects of instrument operation as well as all autosampler functions. This is critical, especially for over-range protection. It also handles data storage, retrieval and reporting while providing powerful tools to assist with sample ID downloads and data uploads to LIMS systems. All calculations associated with EPA QC requirements, such as calibration factor curvefit and system blank verifications are handled directly within the software. INSTRUMENT CONTROL Hydra II is fully automated and all system parameters are saved with each analytical method. The Instrument Control screen shows a graphical display of the current analytical conditions and provides immediate control of all system functions including lamp, pump, gas flow, amalgamator and autosampler. QC AUTOMATION QC Automation delivers unmatched flexibility for automated analysis. It defines both calibration and quality control locations as well as defining when check standards appear during an automated sequence. Its three tables allow selection of QC checks to be run before all samples (Initial), the QC checks to be inserted in the sample sequence after a specified number of samples (Continuous) and the checks to be run at the end of a sequence (Final). Unique actions are supported for each check in each table. 8

REAL-TIME SIGNALS During analysis, real-time signal displays provide direct comparison of integrated measurements. These signals are saved with the sample data and are always available for review. Here is the signal for a 1 ppt standard. SAMPLE SEQUENCING WITH ON-THE-FLY PROGRAMMING For automated analysis the sample names are entered into the sample table. Sample names can be entered manually or by download from your LIMS System. Calibration standards and quality control checks established in the QC Automation section of the software are inserted automatically. While a sequence is running, new samples can be added. HYDRA II AF SOFTWARE REPORTING FLEXIBILITY When it comes time to generate a report, simply select the sample items, including calibration standards, quality control checks, and the details to be reported. There are about 30 recorded items for each sample. The report displays the selected details from left to right in the order the items are selected.
