CPC CODE 3511 Paint and varnishes APPROVAL DATE 17/06/2014 Validity 3 years REGISTRATION NUMBER S-P Weathershield Range Environmental Product Declaration

Description This document is a Environmental Product Declaration (EPD). This EPD is an externally verified document that reports environmental data of products based on life cycle assessment (LCA) and other relevant information and in accordance with the international standard ISO (Type III Environmental Declarations). This EPD contains information for 28 Weathershield Range paint products which are manufactured and applied in the UK (see page 5). This EPD has been produced by AkzoNobel and has been externally verified by Lars-Gunnar Lindfors (see page 126) Further, this document is in compliance with: The International EPD General Program Instructions, ver of 18/09/2013. PCR 2014:10 UN CPC 3511: Paint and varnishes and related products; ver /04/2014 ISO 14040/14044 on Life Cycle Assessments 2

2. The product and the process Weathershield Range paints are produced in three owned sites in the UK located in: Slough in Berkshire, England Prudhoe in Northumberland, England Stowmarket in in Suffolk, England During paint production the raw materials are pre-weighed according to the percentage of each in the formulation. The pigment is then dispersed in a mixture of the binder and solvent using a variety of machines. The amount and type of dispersion is product specific and depends on the type of finish required. Finally tinter is added to correct the colour, the paint is thinned to viscosity, filtered and filled into the appropriate packaging container The products are packed in a plastic can with a capacity of 2.5 liters or 5 liters; or in a metal can with a capacity of 1 liter, 2.5 liters or 5 liters. All paint containers are then transported from our sites to a distribution center and finally to our customers in the UK. Some example of customers include our Dulux Decorative Centers, decorative merchants and DIY (do-it-yourself) retailers. Following the cut-off rules indicated in the PCR, this LCA includes 99% of the total inflow. Some materials added in small quantities e.g. some additives have not been considered. All of our AkzoNobel Decorative Paints manufacturing sites in the United Kingdom have achieved ISO standards. Further, all our operations in the UK have been awarded the Carbon Trust Standard in 2009, 2011 and

4. Environmental performance LCA The Environmental performance was calculated using LCA (life cycle analysis). All major steps from the extraction of natural resources until the final disposal of the product are included in the environmental performance of the manufacturing phase (cradle-to-grave). This study was conducted following the product category rules (PCR) published by the International EPD system: CPC Paints and varnishes and related products. Site-specific data has been retrieved for the year of For some of the raw materials, generic data has been used according to the suggested sources in the PCR. Paint production yields no commercial by-products. Thus, there is no need for allocation in this specific process. FUNCTIONAL UNIT The environmental performance of the Weathershield Paints refers to 1 m2 of painted surface. See next page for further information. SYSTEM BOUNDARIES The environmental performance of Weathershield Range Paints is constituted of three life cycle phases: upstream, core and downstream. Upstream Core Downstream Raw Material extraction and production Primary Packaging Production Secondary Packaging Production Auxiliaries production transport transport transport transport Paint manufacturing process Packaging Process Equipment Cleaning Paint Distribution Paint Use transport Paint and packaging End of life 9

3. Functional Unit According to the PCR 3511 Paint and varnishes the declared unit should be the amount of product needed to cover the surface area of 1 m 2 of substrate. Further specifications are presented in the table below. All Weathershield products in this EPD belong to the CPC Subclass: Paints and varnishes and related products. 11 5. End-of-Life scenarios There is no statistical information about the fate of paint and paint containers in Europe. Based on extended research* and our knowledge of the market and the product, the below numbers are our best available estimates of the current End-of-life situation of paint and paint containers in Europe. 85% Landfill 15% Incineration In the UK context, exterior paint and packaging waste is usually sent to: 30% Landfill 60% Incineration 10% Reycle 15% 25% Landfill 60% Reycle Incineration The end-of-life emission factors used for the Global Warming Potential are based on the carbon content of each of the paints. For landfill the emission factor varies between 0,27-0,05 kg CO2-eq. fossil/kg paint depending on each paint s formulation** For incineration the emission factor varies between 0,27-0,07 kg CO2-eq. fossil/kg paint depending on each paint s formulation *We have been carrying out extensive research to understand the fate of our products and packaging. We have been in contact with suppliers and waste management companies to understand the End of life of our products. ** It is assumed that the polymer in the paint ending up in landfill will degrade into CO2 in a 100 year perspective. In landfill, the calcium carbonate in the paint will remain stable. 11

6. Characterization Factors for Results In accordance to the International EPD system programme instructions, the following characterization factors were used: Impact category (Unit) Characterization factors Original reference(s) Examples Acidification potential (kg SO2e) AP, CML 2001 non-baseline, Version: April Hauschild & Wenzel (1998) 1 kg ammonia = 1,88 kg SO2e 1 kg nitrogen dioxide = 0,7 kg SO2e Eutrophication potential (kg PO43-e) EP, CML 2001 baseline Version: April Heijungs et al. (1992) 1 kg COD (to freshwater) = 0,022 kg kg PO43-e 1 kg ammonia = 0,35 kg kg PO43-e Global warming potential (kg CO2e) GWP100, CML 2001 baseline Version: April IPCC (2007) 1 kg carbon dioxide = 1 kg CO2e 1 kg methane = 25 kg CO2e Photochemical oxidant creation potential (kg C2H4e) POCP (high NOx), CML 2001 baseline Version: April Jenkin & Hayman (1999), Derwent et al. (1998) 1 kg carbon monoxide = 0,027 kg C2H4e 1 kg ethane = 0,123 kg C2H4e The characterization factor used for POCP specific to the VOC mix during paint application is 0,29 kg C2H4e The General programme instruction rules sets certain environmental indicators to be reported in this EPD; besides from these required indicators the following environmental indicators are also reported in this EPD: Air emissions: CO2 (fossil), SO2, CH4 (fossil), NOx, VOC and NMVOC (Non-Methane Volatile Organic Compounds). Human toxicity (cancer and non-cancer) and Ecotoxicity calculated using the USEtox model. 12
