Online RUG Meeting October 10, :30 10:00 EST Tim Colling, P.E., Gary Schlaff, Mary Crane RUG Chairs and Co-Chairs Southern Lower - Ken Johnson, Christine Witucki Northern Lower - Ron Young, Ann Miller U.P. - Joe Waananen

Agenda 1. Overview of New Modules - Enhanced Traffic Counts, Driveway, Traffic Signal, Sidewalk, Maintenance, Walking/Bike Path 3. Existing Module Enhancements Main map, Road, Legends, Sign, Culvert, Guardrail, Point-Pavement Markings, Linear Pavement Markings, LDC, TAMC, Other Enhancements 4. Additional Suggestions Open discussion 5. Training

What s New in 2006? Intersection Module Safety Analysis TAMC Still to come

Traffic Count Enhancements Greatly expanded traffic count details to provide better integration with other RoadSoft data. Includes map layer to display counts, integration with crash data, and point and linear pavement markings. Survey Results 7% 9%5% 37% Necessity More Info Resources Other Sotware Not Priority 42%

Traffic Count Enhancements Survey Additional Comments Directly download counters Simple method to extend counts across multiple segments that are considered similar Allow existing data from consultant to be populated Ability to select both ADT (raw data) and AADT (approximate average) in reports (ranges in legends) Separate from inventory module, own segments include hourly counts, report by segment and/or date Read from many counter outputs and place the data in one format Discussion

Driveway Inventory and Permitting Module Tracking of driveway locations, types, classifications, and functions to aid in permitting and safety analysis. Includes map layer and integration with segment, intersection and crash data. Survey Results 19% 19% 4% 23% 35% Necessity More Info Resources Other Software Not Priority

Driveway Inventory and Permitting Module Survey Additional Comments Extremely useful and likely to encourage partnerships such as 911 Can aerial photography and GIS address this issue? We also plow privates drives. Would like to start inventorying all drives for drainage and also sight distance compliance. Discussion

Traffic Signal Module Tracking of traffic signal locations, types, and timing to aid in maintenance scheduling and safety analysis. Includes a map layer. Survey Results 33% 31% Necessity More Info Resources Other Software 5% Not Priority 4% 27%

Traffic Signal Module Survey Additional Comments Traffic signal information is crucial to a lot of transportation issues. How detailed will the information on the signals get? Uses safety, congestion management, operations Discussion

Sidewalk Module Tracking of sidewalk location, type, year built, and current condition to aid in maintenance planning. Includes map layer. Survey Results 18% 43% 24% Necessity More Info Resources Other Software Not Priority 0% 15%

Sidewalk Module Survey Additional Comments Difficult to collect uses: safety, non-motorized planning, safe routes to schools, intermodal connections (transit) Discussion

Maintenance Projection A module to help project annual volumes of maintenance supplies associated with road details. Survey Results 6% 12% 20% 16% 46% Necessity More Info Resources Other Software Not Priority

Maintenance Projection Survey Additional Comments Sounds good. not sure how to do it. This fits right in with road maintenance & cost projection, the original intent of the software Discussion

Walking/Bike Path Module Tracking of walking/bike path location, material type, year built, and current condition to aid in maintenance planning. Includes map layer. Survey Results 17% 39% 0% 11% 33% Necessity More Info Resources Other Software Not Priority

Walking/Bike Path Module Survey Additional Comments Incorporated with the sidewalk module? Discussion

Main Map Enhancements Survey Results

Main Map Enhancements Survey Additional Comments part 1 Accept different map projections Allow editing of framework basemap A means to allow automated network updates by network categories and not just single link data entry Be able to place an Index on the map when printing Right-click option to include an option for legend builder When printing, have a legend also print and the network description or criteria Allow use of aerial photos (tiff, sid format)

Main Map Enhancements Survey Additional Comments part 2 Show railroad tracks and be able to measure distance from them Improved township/village labeling. Often, the label for villages and township names will overlap because of jurisdictional definitions. Road labeling. Sometimes RS will overwrite boulevard names, so you will end up with a situation where the directional prefix will be obscured, e.g., N/S Adams road in Oakland County Discussion

Road Module Enhancements Survey Results

Road Module Enhancements Survey Additional Comments Print maps with different filters and filter index shown Checkbox or surface type for seasonal road Surface type for non-constructed right of way (paper road) Edit split button to say "surface split" or "rating split" or "marking split" or similar. A few times I thought I was splitting for surface type & found I split for rating. Ability to merge segments. Over the years, a number of mile segments have been created in our region. We can't seem to get rid of them. Discussion

Map Legends/Layers/Views Enhancements Survey Results

Map Legends/Layers/Views Enhancements Survey Additional Comments Allow setting of ranges in legend options Allow legend for the year that the street was last resurfaced, including the resurface type Discussion

Sign Enhancements Survey Results

Sign Enhancements Survey Additional Comments Import data from Carte-Graphic signview Discussion

Culvert Enhancements Survey Results

Culvert Enhancements Survey Additional Comments Info/Id form should include size and length IRR Bridge check box Add flood flows (and frequency) if known Discussion

Guardrail Enhancements Survey Results

Guardrail Enhancements Survey Additional Comments Ability to add guardrail at end of road Discussion

Point Pavement Marking Enhancements Survey Results

Point Pavement Marking Enhancements Survey Additional Comments Need condition inventory Discussion

Linear Pavement Marking Enhancements Survey Results

Linear Pavement Marking Enhancements Survey Additional Comments Generate report on the amount of bead needed depending on the type of paint being applied Discussion

Laptop Data Collector Enhancements Survey Results

Laptop Data Collector Enhancements Survey Additional Comments Allow sidewalk data collection New reason for rating change is a hassle Only if we can use our high end GPS. Discussion

TAMC Enhancements Survey Results

TAMC Enhancements Survey Additional Comments Add TAMC data to rating segment screen. so that we enter the treatment and cost as a multi edit over the length of the project instead of having to pro rate the cost of the treatment over the hole project, regardless how small the segment. ie seg = 0.02 mile = $500 chip I would like to discuss more, need to learn more about what is being proposed. Discussion

Other Enhancements Survey Results - only allowed one answer

Other Enhancements Survey Additional Comments Network builder could be easier to navigate and build Data base manager seems kind of cumbersome and confusing Bridge data should be tied to MDOT MBIS system Discussion

Additional Suggestions Work orders with location map sign, culvert, guardrail, etc. Manuals in layman s terms for all modules and functions More help on backups, shape files, highlights for new users Searching crash data by any field Generate Bridge reports from the MBIS pontis data - use their data fields as filters For both point and linear, my concern is in regards to treatments for run off road/lane departure crashes. There are types of pavement marking material that is best suited for this. Please include.

Training Survey Results

Training Scaled down version for small municipalities? More condensed version of training signs, sidewalks, curb & gutter Training new bells and whistles Using Modules guardrail inventory, signs, pavement marking Traffic signal module Printing Advanced Asset Management and Budgeting
