3 What are cross-linked foams? Combilay Ultra and Multi underlays are manufactured from cross-linked foams. Cross-linking is a process that transforms the cells to become rounder and more resilient. In addition, the cells are interwoven, resulting in a material with a vastly improved life and recovery from compression. Many of its unique properties are based on the physical cross-linking of the polyolefin chains resulting in a 3-dimensional polymer network. Excellent acoustic, mechanical and chemical properties No odour (even food and medical approved) Lightweight, excellent weight / performance ratio Environmentally friendly Odour / VOC - Combilay cross-linked foam underlays are based on polyolefin resins known to be free of any annoying odours or smells. The total amount of volatile organic components (VOC) is extremely low when compared to other underlay materials. Inertness Combilay cross-linked foam underlays are based on polyolefin resins and thereby inert against the impact of humidity and chemicals. The material is resistant against mould and mildew and does not deteriorate or rot. Migration Combilay cross-linked foam underlays are produced without plasticisers which could cause negative migration effects (eg. Adhesive problems between laminate and underlay material or negative visual changes of the laminate surface). Dangerous substances Combilay cross-linked foam underlays fulfil the requirements of 76/769/EC (dangerous substances) including its 2th amendment 2003/11/EC, 2002/72/EC (plastic materials in contact with foodstuffs) and complies with the requirements of the European directive 2002/95/EC (restriction of hazardous substances, ROHS). They are free of heavy metals and fulfil 9/62/EC Packaging Directive (cumulative concentration of lead, cadmium, mercury and hexavalent chromium is less than 100 ppm). Surface quality Combilay cross-linked foam underlays have an ultrasmooth and soft elastic surface. A protective interlayer, to prevent abrasion to the laminate caused by vibration during transportation, is therefore not required. Visit: 3

6 - Multi TM Combilay-Multi adhesive underlay is the next generation in underlay for engineered and solid wood floors. It is a sound reducing, thermal insulating underlay incorporating a strong adhesive coating, which will change the way fitters install real wood floors in the home or commercial place. Impact sound reduction Drum sound improvement Physically cross-linked polyolefin foam Closed cell structure Conformable, smooths irregular surface Shock absorbent Dust free, no odour, allergy friendly Anti fungal, mildew resistant Easy to lay Lightweight and elastic, will not break Firm cushion support for improved comfort Ultra smooth, soft quality surface Withstand high weight surface loads Suitable for underfloor heating systems Adhesive back for strong & quick application No Damp Proof Membrane required 6 Call for more information

7 Combilay-Multi is a closed cell cross linked polyolefin plastic foam underlay with an adhesive on one side protected by a polythene membrane. The concept for this underlay is to make real wood floor installation a project achievable to the DIYer and adding speed to the trade fitter reducing time on jobs. It is estimated that you will save 60% - 70% of time over traditional installation techniques. How does it work? Combilay-Multi adhesive underlay works by adhering to the flooring being installed and keeping it in place. It s flexibility allows the floor to expand and contract naturally without unsightly gaps appearing. There is no longer the need for expensive tools and machinery to install solid and engineered real wood flooring. Secret nailing, gluing and clips are a thing of the past. 1. The floor planks are laid on top of the polythene membrane. 2. The membrane is peeled back. 3. The boards are then stuck to the underlay. 11 Combilay Technical Performance Symbol & Data Guide Combilay cross-linked foams are tested to several European standard classifications: Thickness Conformability When choosing an underlay, it is important that the material is thick enough and yet elastic enough to conform should the floor be uneven or if there is any small protruding particles left on the surface of the floor. All Combilay cross-linked foams are conformable so prevent the creation of unwanted sound bridges or cavities, thus giving a level surface on which to lay the floor. Reflected Walking Sound Reflected sound (also called room, emitted or drum sound) is principally defined as a perceived level of noise inside a room created by impact sources such as footsteps or dropped objects. Various test methods are currently under evaluation to determine both subjective and objective drum sound levels. Impact Sound Improvement Impact sound improvement (also called Transmitted Sound Reduction) of laminate flooring is measured according to ISO 10 standard by using a tapping hammer against the floor. The results is a value known as an impact sound improvement index Lw (db) which describes the differing noise levels in a room located underneath, once with and once without a floating laminate floor. The higher the value the lower the noise level in the downstairs room. Compressive Strength Using EN 826 standard, the compressive strength of Combilay crosslinked foams are tested at 0.5mm deformation. A minimum value of 20kPa is recommended to prevent potential damage to the tongue and groove system (click or non-click laminate) when puncture load is applied. Compressive Creep Compressive creep is the loss of thickness over time under a specified load, and is measured according to EN 1606 standard. The value, measured in kpa, refers to the maximum load which can be applied to the foam to ensure that the loss in thickness remains below 10% after 10 years loading time. Water Vapour Diffusion The water vapour barrier value of a material is the product of the diffusion resistance to water vapour passage and the thickness (sd = µ*d), and corresponds to the equivalent air layer thickness (m). With vapour permeable materials, sd values are lower than 0.05 m, while with vapour obstacles, the sd values are in the range 0.05 to 10m; vapour barriers are characterised with sd values exceeding 10m. All Combilay cross-linked products are tested according to EN standard (23ºC at 0-50% relative humidity), and give an sd value of at least 15m, eliminating the necessity for additional moisture barriers. Thermal Resistance The thermal insulation or resistance of the underlay is particularly important if using underfloor heating. The standards used are EN and EN 1266 at 2ºC. According to EN 126 part 3 Floor Heating System and Components, the thermal resistance of Rl,B of all materials (underlay, laminate, carpet, etc.) laying on top of a heated floor should not exceed 0.150m 2 K/W to prevent an unnecessary increase of the flow temperature of the heating system. 12 TM PERFORMANCE FLOORING UNDERLAY Combilay multi-purpose barrier underlays are ideal for all laminate and solid wood floors. Our highly advanced manufacturing techniques have produced a combination of thermal and sound insulation, with most also offering damp proofing properties. Floors must always be laid according to manufacturing guidelines. Joins between each strip of underlay must always be taped or sealed to maintain damp proof performance. Test results are taken from average values and are therefore only presented as a guideline. Combilay underlays are combustible and should not be exposed to flame or other sources of ignition.
