6 Catalysts for Change Why do we need to Step Up the Game in well surface location and wellbore positioning data management? Complexity of dense pad drilling, SAGD well pairs and horizontal wells This is the new normal as Canada plans to capitalize on the Oil Sands and Shale plays! Critical need for 3D well positioning accuracy for reservoir optimization and collision avoidance Multi-disciplinary demands for real-time data, data integration, data visualization and analytics Changes in regulatory, health, safety & environmental requirements Economic downturn creating demand to do more with less Copyright 2015 Noah Consulting LLC. 10 Let s Talk Basic Well Location Data! Simple Well Concept With the more complex realities Surface Location Planned and as-built metes and bounds with measured or calculated latitude/longitude and X/Ys Ground elevation License # and well name Wellbore Path Planned and as-built directional survey with depth, deviation and azimuth along with calculated latitude/longitude and X/Ys Bottom Hole Location Planned and as-built total depth and calculated latitude/longitude, X/Ys, TVD Licensed UWI Image from PPDM Website - WIAW Standard Copyright 2015 Noah Consulting LLC. 11 Related Data Needed to Accurately Locate a Single Well at the Surface Well Origin Survey Plat Survey grid (ATS 4.1 or previous) Measurement reference point Datum (NAD83 or NAD27) Map projection (UTM zone) Planned, as-built or revision? 13 Related Data Needed to Accurately Locate a Single Wellbore Path in the Subsurface Wellbore Accurate surface location Directional survey report Measurement reference (rig dependent) North reference Planned, as-built or revision? 15 Relative Dependencies to Consider When You Manage, Model and Analyze Well Data Things you need to know: Whose problem are you trying to solve? What applications will you use and where will you get your data? Do you have the right quality data to make the best decisions? The following questions should come to mind: Are the wells uniquely identified in source and consuming systems? Are all the required well components uniquely identified? Are the dependencies between the well location components understood and maintained? What is the source and quality of the data? Is it planned, measured or calculated data? Have the same locational reference datums and grids, map projections, units of measure been used? What were the coordinate transformation methods if not? Were there rig elevation or surface location changes during the drilling phase? Copyright 2015 Noah Consulting LLC. All Rights Reserved. Page 15

16 Developing Well Location Data Management Best Practices Developing skilled well data management teams and data governance organizations Building and leveraging geomatics and spatial data management expertise Implementing well location data quality management and associated metrics Developing strong partnerships with regulators, data vendors, partners, service and software providers Formalizing data standards and delivery expectations with service companies Establishing master data management capabilities and leveraging master well data repositories built from authoritative sources Enforcing project data management standards to ensure accurate data for interpretation and analysis applications Modelling after the best well and seismic data management practices and putting a $ value on well data like we do on seismic! 17 Establishing Data Governance for Well Location Data Process How is data created or modified? Data Governance Who is responsible, accountable, consulted or informed to perform within the Data Governance framework? People Technology Where are processes, rules, terms & definitions captured, maintained & executed? Balance is needed to support effective Data Management Copyright 2015 Noah Consulting LLC. 18 Let s Talk about Managing Well Location Data - Discussion Are you willing to share your well location data related challenges, focus areas or successes? For example: Do your end users have quality well location data to make decisions? What are the consequences if not? Do you have specified people managing your well location data using consistent processes and technology? Is your well location data consistent between applications? How might you be more efficient in managing your well location data? Does your company have improvement areas targeted? Do we need to do What is a Well Location with PPDM? Are you experiencing funding and resourcing challenges due to the downturn or is managing data seen as a priority? Copyright 2015 Noah Consulting LLC. All Rights Reserved. Page 18
