3 Module TW1 Preparation and movement of trains KEY CHANGES The instructions in section 28 headed 'Rail-head adhesion' have been revised and renamed 'Rail adhesion'. The terms for describing poor adhesion have been changed because there was sometimes confusion over the correct term to be used. This was because the term changed if the location was shown in the Sectional Appendix as a location known to be prone to poor adhesion. 'Expected' is now used to describe adhesion that is no worse than would be expected for the location and environmental conditions. 'Reportable' is used to describe adhesion that is worse than would be expected for the location and environmental conditions.'reportable' levels are to be reported by the driver to the signaller immediately. Whether or not a location is shown in the Sectional Appendix as a location known to be prone to poor adhesion now makes no difference to the term used to tell a signaller ('Reportable') when these rail adhesion levels have been experienced. Hence, at these known locations, rail adhesion levels would only be 'reportable' if they were unexpected or worse than expected. DETAIL OF CHANGES Section headings in bold relate to issue 12 of module TW1 28 Rail-head adhesion The title has been changed to Rail adhesion Experiencing exceptional rail-head conditions This section has been split into two, 28.1 Levels of rail adhesion and 28.2 When to report rail adhesion levels. Section 28.1 now shows the three levels of rail adhesion and their definitions. Section 28.2 now includes the instruction for drivers to report 'reportable' rail adhesion and the signaller's table of actions for 'reportable' rail adhesion. It also includes an instruction for drivers to follow their train operator's driving policy for low adhesion at locations where they expect to experience 'expected' adhesion levels but that these conditions do not need to be reported. It also tells signallers that they can tell drivers about 'reportable' rail adhesion using the 'Acknowledge (safety) broadcast calls' arrangements shown in RS523 GSM-R Handbook. If a driver has been told about 'reportable' rail adhesion levels they should approach the location using the method shown in their train operator's driving policy. 06/18 Briefing Leaflet Page 3

4 28.2 Arranging a controlled test stop This section has been re-numbered as 28.3 The terms used to describe poor rail conditions have been revised to match those used in sections 28.1 and Resuming normal working This section has been re-numbered as The terms used to describe poor rail conditions have been revised to match those used in section 28.1 and Serious wheel slip This section has been re-numbered as 28.5, there is no change to the content of the instruction.
