1 Tutorial on Impulse voltage Generation, Measurements and latest trends in high voltage testing & diagnostics of electrical equipments August, 2012 Organized by CENTRAL POWER RESEARCH INSTITUTE UHV RESEARCH LABORATORY HYDERABAD , INDIA

2 PROFILE Central Power Research Institute (CPRI) set up in 1960 by the Government of India, functions as a National organization for applied research in power sector and also serves as an independent laboratory for testing and certification of power equipment. CPRI is a member in many bodies governing certification. CPRI also provides consultancy services on various facets of power sector. CPRI has expertise in the area of simulation, diagnostics, system analysis and testing. CPRI laboratories have modern equipment needed for power system simulation, short circuit testing, diagnostics of equipment, materials engineering, Seismic qualification etc. CPRI has experienced faculty in different subjects concerned to power sector with practical experience in their respective areas of interest, as well as extensive experience in presenting courses/seminars. Over the period, CPRI officers have gained lot of practical knowledge concerning to testing and operational problems of the industry. CPRI is a leading provider of Training and Continuing Education to Utilities, PSUs, across the country for the past 50 years. CPRI is continually setting new standards in training and continuing education from basic theoretical information to practical hands-on electrical equipment training. CPRI courses have made a substantial impact on the level of training and education to India s electricity utilities, manufacturing companies, transmission and distribution companies. By upgrading the occupational skills of technical workers, CPRI training courses have improved the career path of many electrical personnel, as well as contributed to an improvement in electricity efficiency, plant productivity, electrical system reliability and overall competitiveness of Indian industry. Help your company generate profits by being well trained and informed. Join the long list of satisfied and informed delegates from industry who have attended our courses, seminars, workshops etc. over the past 50 years. CPRI Technical programmes are always a learning success! About program Insulation is one of the most important constituents of power equipment. Any weakness of insulation may result in failure. A measure of the effectiveness with which insulation performs is the dielectric strength. The surge voltages namely lightning and switching are probably the most common cause of insulation failure. Hence, it is important for the power system engineers and the manufacturers of high voltage equipment to have a basic understanding of Generation and Measurements of these voltages in laboratory and impulse testing to ensure withstand capability of electrical equipments for reliable operation of the power system. Digital techniques, now a day, are extensively used in high voltage testing and diagnosing the results to determine the failures/condition of the

3 electrical equipments. Application of digital recorders for measurement of transient voltages in high voltage environment will be a useful tool during testing. It allows the data to be stored and evaluation to determine various parameters using digital techniques and software s. Software Viz., MATLAB, LABVIEW etc with software tools like Fast Fourier Transform, Wavelet, FRA, ANN etc can be applied to diagnose the failures/condition of the equipment. These latest digital measuring and analyzing technique will help in identifying and locating the fault in equipments. UHV Research Laboratory, CPRI, Hyderabad is organizing two day tutorial program on Impulse voltage Generation, Measurements and latest trends in high voltage testing & diagnostics of electrical equipments. An objective of the program is to familiarize the engineers from manufacturing industry involved in design, production & testing, utilities, consulting and inspection engineers, academic faculty and students to understand the impulse voltage generation, measurements and testing of various electrical equipment as per national and international standards. Speakers & Topics Experts from CPRI, industry and academic institutions will deliver lectures in this program which broadly covers the following topics in addition to a visit to the laboratory for live demonstration. Generation of Impulse voltages Measurement of impulse voltages Impulse testing of various electrical equipments as per relevant national and international standards. Digital recorders in High voltage and current measurements Diagnosis using Transfer function, FRA, Wavelets, ANN etc techniques Who Should Attend The tutorial program is open to all concerned in the field of electrical engineering in general. However, the program will be useful to the personnel involved in the following areas of work: High voltage equipment manufacturers/quality assurance engineers Electrical utility engineers involved in testing, inspection, operation & maintenance etc. Teaching faculty, Research scholars and students Technical consultants/contractors involved in transmission / distribution network installations/preparation of specifications
