KEEPING SAFE AT WORK In Australia all workplaces must be safe places. The Australian government has laws about keeping workplaces safe. Employers and employees must follow these laws. All workplaces have safety laws. All workers must know the safety rules. All workers must keep themselves and their workmates safe at work. When you start a new job your supervisor will tell you the safety rules for your job. Your supervisor may give you a book with the rules. There may be safety rules on posters around your workplaces. These safety rules are called Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) or Work Health and Safety (WHS). SAFETY CLOTHING Many places have rules about clothing that employees can wear at work. Can you think of some safety clothing you have seen or use? What clothing do builders wear to protect their heads? What do you use to protect your ears from loud noises? What would construction workers use to protect their feet? What would welders use to protect their eyes? What do nurses wear to protect them from infection? 6

Some workers must wear a lot of safety clothing. Some clothing keeps other people safe. People who work with food have to wear gloves. Why? Your employer will tell you about the safety clothing for your job. You must wear safety clothing. Workplaces have a person who is responsible for safety. You can ask your WHS officer or OHS representative. What safety clothing does Richard wear to work as a forklift driver? What safety clothing does Simon wear to process vegetables? What safety clothing does Daniel wear at work? What safety clothing do you wear when you work at home? Meena works in an orchard. Her tasks include picking fruit and pruning trees using secateurs, spraying fruit trees and climbing a ladder to pick fruit. She usually works outside. What safety clothing should Meena wear? 7

All hazards have to be fixed or removed. If they can t be taken away, they have to have a warning sign. SAFETY IN AN EMERGENCY When something dangerous happens quickly it is called and emergency. It could be a chemical spill, a fire or a gas leak. You must know what to do in an emergency so that you keep safe. Your workplace will have rules about what you must do in an emergency. These rules will be on a poster in your workplace. Where in your workplace is the emergency poster? 9

WORKING IN A TEAM WHAT IS A TEAM? A team is a group of people working together. Sometimes we choose the people we work with in a team but you won t always be in a team with your friends or people you know. Sometimes people in your team will be older than you. Sometimes people in your team will be younger than you. You could be in a team with men or women or both. Some people in your team could be from different countries and speak a different language. Some people may have a different religion to you. Having different types of people in your team can be good. You get different ideas and you can learn from each other. What teams have you worked in (sports, hobbies, family)? Why is it good to have lots of different people in a team? WHY DO WE WORK IN TEAMS? There are some good reasons to work in teams. Teams can make work easier. We can get work done faster in a team. Working in a team can make work fun. 10

David works in a garden shop as a sales assistant. His job is to keep the shop clean and to water the plants. He is learning how to use the cash register. He is the youngest person working at the shop. He works from 8am-2:30 pm Tuesday to Saturday. Janet has worked in the shop for 20 years and knows all about the plants. She helps the customers find what they want and answers their questions. Bob owns the shop. He takes the money from the customers and gives them the change. He also knows all about the plants they sell. David, Janet and Bob need each other so the shop runs well. They work as a team. David asks Janet a lot of questions about the plants. He wants to learn to take care of the plants. Janet shares her ideas with him. What are some of David s tasks? For how long has Janet worked in the shop? How does working in the team help David? TEAM GOALS What goals do you have in a soccer or netball team? 11

Work teams also have goals. A goal is something you work on to try to get done. Your goal may be to peel and cut ten pumpkins. Your goal may be to clean the bathroom and vacuum the floors. Your goal may be to move and stack five pallets. It may be to paint a wall. It may be to dig a garden bed. A team works together to reach goals. EVERY TEAM MEMBER CONTRIBUTES Working in a team is a good way to make new friends. You can find out more about people when you work with them. You can find out what people are good at. Everybody is good at something. What are you good at? Tick the box that is right for you. I am good at: Yes No cleaning thinking of ideas using computers cooking working with machines organising Working in a team is good because everyone has a different skill. When we put all our skills together we can work faster. The team can reach its goals more easily. We need lots of different skills to reach goals at work and do jobs well. Planning a party It is Mohammed s birthday next week. Paul, Bir and Ruth are planning a birthday party for him at their house. Paul and Bir are not good at writing so Ruth writes the invitations. Paul is not good at cooking so Bir bakes the cake. Bir and Ruth do not know much about music so Paul chooses the music. Each person is good at something. They all work together to prepare for the party. 12

Think about a time you worked in a team to plan something. Write about what you planned. o Who was in the team? o What was each person good at? o What was your task? PLANNING IN A TEAM Work teams make plans. The team plans how they will get the job done. The team needs to plan so that everything goes smoothly. People won t know what to do if they don t have a plan. Some teams have a leader to work out a plan. In other teams everyone helps to make a plan. Teams have to plan how they will work and when they need to finish the job. JOBS FOR THE TEAM Everyone in a team has a job they must do. The team plans what each person will do. You will usually get a job to do that you are good at. Sometimes you may get a job that you have not done before. Have you been given a task that was new for you? What was it and how did you know how to do it? You can always learn to do new things and it can be fun. What do you do if you don t know how to do something? PLANNING A TIMELINE A timeline helps you plan so that a job can be finished at the right time. Everyone in the team has a job and a time line. You must finish your part of the work in the time you are given. If you do not you may make it difficult for someone else to do their job. You will let your team down. 13

Misha, Phul Maya and John work as a team. They have been asked to put a books shelf together for in five days. Phul Maya and John are putting the pieces together. Misha is painting the shelf. Phul Maya and John are careful with timelines. They take three days to finish their tasks. Misha starts painting late. She does not finish painting the shelves in two days. The book shelf is not finished. The boss is angry as the book shelf is needed. Misha, Phul Maya and John get in trouble with their boss. Misha let the team down. Misha was not a good team member. How do you think Phul Maya and John feel about getting in trouble? Why do they feel that way? What could Misha do when she accepted the job? GOOD TEAM MEMBERS What makes a good team member? Are you a good team member? There are things that you can do to be a good team member. Think about the teams that you have been in. What makes a good team member? What type of people do you enjoy working with? 14

COMMUNICATE CLEARLY It is important to communicate clearly in a team. A team doesn t work well when people do not understand each other. Make sure your team members understand you. Pay close attention when people are communicating with you. WORKING TOGETHER People in a team help each other. Some people do not ask for help when they need it. If you see someone who needs help, you can help that person. When you need help, make sure you ask for help. Teams work best when they are sharing and helping. Teams work well when they share ideas. If you have a good idea, don t be too shy to share your idea with your team. There is no bad idea. Nadia has just started work in an office. She is in a team of three people. One of their tasks is to keep the office safe form trip hazards. Nadia noticed that there were several boxes blocking a fire exit. She knows that they must be moved to a safer place. She moves each box to a storeroom. Ian sees Nadia moving the boxes. He thinks it would be faster if someone helped Nadia. Ian does not tell the team his idea. He works on his own job and does not help Nadia. It takes Nadia half an hour to move the boxes to the storeroom. At the end of the day Nadia looks very tired. Ian feels bad that he didn t help Nadia. 15
