3 Finding the leaders of tomorrow Headquartered in Irvine, California, Golden State Foods Corp. manufactures and distributes food and drink to some of the world s best-known fast-food restaurants. Serving over 125 customers including McDonald s, Chick-fil-A, and Starbucks across 60 countries, Golden State Foods puts food on people s plates in more than 125,000 restaurants and stores worldwide. Herbert Callahan, senior director of human resources at Golden State Foods, says, We operate six different lines of business, which include food and liquids product manufacturing, aseptic processing, and distribution services. We rely on a wide variety of talent to keep operations running smoothly. As the company continues to grow and as new technologies come in, we want to make sure that our employees have the right skill set to keep up. Our number one priority, therefore, is identifying, attracting, developing and retaining talent. It s not just about finding the right people for the job, but also ensuring that we have the right processes in place to keep staff engaged in the business. We keep detailed employee profiles so that we can record their strengths and track their career development. In the past, Golden State Foods talent management process was overwhelmingly paper based. Callahan recalls, Supervisors recorded employee performance reviews and development discussions on paper. We then had to make physical copies to distribute this information management teams a time-consuming process. It would take eight weeks for HR to process the performance reviews and update employee profiles. Our talent management process was becoming ineffective. 3 / 6

4 Securing a new way forward To support an ever-changing environment, better track employee development, improve the quality of development discussions, and increase employee engagement, Golden State Foods decided to modernize its talent management processes. Callahan comments, We wanted to be more agile and to be able to respond to development opportunities faster. Rather than having to wait weeks for information to be circulated and profiles to be updated, we wanted real-time insight into employee performance and progress. After evaluating solutions from several software vendors, Golden State Foods chose to implement two modules from the SAP SuccessFactors HCM Suite SAP SuccessFactors Succession & Development and SAP SuccessFactors Recruiting as the foundation of its new talent management platform. SAP SuccessFactors software was the only set of solutions that met all of our business requirements, says Callahan. Not only is it robust enough to handle data on all of our employees, it also integrates seamlessly with our core HR system, and is very user-friendly. Golden State Foods worked closely with technology partner Quadrant 4 to digitize and automate processes. Callahan remarks, Quadrant 4 configured the solution so that employee profiles include performance, major accomplishments, strengths and weaknesses, and career aspirations. Data from talent assessments and development discussions is automatically consolidated into the SAP SuccessFactors solution, giving us real-time insight into employee performance and all of the information is searchable. Rather than having to create manual reports, users can gather the information they need almost instantly. 4 / 6

5 Tip-top talent management Today, Golden States Foods benefits from a unified, up-to-date overview of its talent. Callahan comments, Previously, we would typically produce 300 binders of employee information a year now we just use SAP SuccessFactors software. Instead of having to try to find information from six months ago to compare with the latest performance review or talent assessment, users can simply check employee profiles in the SAP SuccessFactors software and track their development in real time. He adds, Comprehensive, in-built succession organizational charts makes it possible for internal recruiters to pull up a retirement report, for example, to see who is leaving within the next months and start looking for their replacement. When a position opens up, recruiters can quickly search for employees with the appropriate skills and experience, and even check who is relocatable. The SAP SuccessFactors solution gives us actionable insight, fast, which has transformed our succession planning processes. Whenever we reach out to potential successors that we ve identified using SAP SuccessFactors solutions we have always gotten a great response. They like that their qualifications and achievements are visible to management it gives them a boost in morale and increases engagement. The built-in graphical tools in SAP SuccessFactors software provide a quick snapshot of talent depth and development opportunities across the company. Users can then drill all the way down to an individual employee and see their performance levels and career aspirations. With SAP SuccessFactors solutions, we have real-time employee data available at the touch of a button. 5 / 6

6 Golden State Foods Keeping employees engaged With the SAP SuccessFactors HCM suite, Golden State Foods has transformed its talent management processes. Callahan says, Since moving to SAP SuccessFactors solutions, we have seen a shift in focus to quality, not volume, of content. Because supervisors have all the latest information at their fingertips, they spend less time searching through paper and have more time to focus on the content. As a result, they have deeper discussions with employees about their career aspirations and goals, which is extremely encouraging. We have seen the emergence of a coaching culture. The ability to quickly log into SAP SuccessFactors solutions and look at up-to-date employee profiles has resulted in a greater number of exchanges making the mentoring processes easier, more personable, and more effective. Supervisors now have greater insight into employee development than ever before, enabling them to manage talent more effectively, keep employees engaged, and ensure a bright future for Golden State Foods (16/05) 6 / 6
