1 NLP Presuppositions NLP Presuppositions refer to the central principles of NLP. They are the basic beliefs and attitudes that effective NLP Practitioners live by. 1. The meaning of communication is the response you get. 2. The map is not the territory. 3. People are doing the best they can with the resources they have available. 4. People have all the resources they need to succeed and to achieve their desired outcome. 5. Respect for the other person s model of the world. 6. People are not their behaviours. 7. Every behaviour has a positive intention. 8. You are in-charge of your mind, and therefore your results. 9. The Law of Requisite Variety: The system/person with the most flexibility of behaviour will control the system. 10. There is no failure, only feedback. 11. Resistance in communication is a sign of a lack of rapport. 12. The most important information about a person is that person s behaviour. 13. All procedures should increase choice and wholeness. 14. The mind and body are connected and therefore affect each other. 15. When you know better you can do better. 16. Everyone has the potential for genius. NLP Quarterly Newsletter April 2018

2 Client Success Stories from the First Quarter 2018 Corporate Cases: HR Consultancy (Training & Coaching) Case 1: Furniture & Interior Designing Company A local, medium-scale, family business Duration of the project: 2 months (February March 2018; ongoing) Problem State: Culture and leadership issues Company did not have standard and professional HR practices. All HR matters were handled in an ad-hoc manner. The leadership given by the top management was no longer inspiring and motivating people. Culture was fear based and there were many direct and implied conflicts between individuals and departments. Ineffective leadership and weak organisational culture were affecting productivity negatively. Step 1: Need Analysis Individual and group discussions. Using NLP META modelling techniques, deep structure of the problem state was identified. It was important to respect the stakeholder s models of the world to understand their perspectives. Key stakeholders in this case were Managing Director, HR Director, Operations Director, senior managers and other employees. All parties had different perspectives, values, beliefs and personality traits which created conflicts and misunderstandings. Most important task was to understand the organisational, functional and individual levels needs for change. Step 2: Training and Coaching Identified development and change gaps were addressed by conducting individual coaching for directors and senior managers and Management/Supervisory skills development for all staff through a MDP (Management Development Programme). - New organisational values such as Trust, Respect for others, Outcome Orientation, Team Cohesiveness - Leadership Traits were enhanced - Relationship between management and employees were strengthened due to afore said values - Positive beliefs and behaviours were promoted - Effective communication between individuals were established - Improved working relationships and work efficiencies were reported - Respect for other people s model of the world. - There is no failure, there s only feedback. - The map is not the territory. - People are not their behaviours, but most important information about a person is that person s behaviour. - Meaning of communication is the response you get. This HR consultancy assignment is an ideal case to prove the effectiveness of NLP in business; mainly in terms of creating the desired mindset in organisational members. It was evident that people are generally receptive to ideas of NLP as they can appreciate the practical use of such ideas to improve overall quality of day-to-day life. NLP presuppositions were once again proven to expand the horizon of thinking and challenge the paradigms in a healthy manner. NLP presuppositions facilitated new thinking patterns in people which helped them behave differently to those organisational variables which were once problematic. People started realising that they can create different outcomes and experiences in life which are healthy by themselves and others when they learn to change their thinking in a positive and purposeful manner. Essentially, this case can be considered as a powerful evidence about the effectiveness of NLP in business. 2

3 Case 2: Cement Manufacturing Company A largescale, multinational company Duration of the project: 2 months Problem State: Company restructuring scheme Company was undergoing restructuring as a result of acquisition. The organisational change involved changes in leadership and required structural and operational shifts. Certain employees were affected by the change. Majority of these employees have been with the organisation for more than 10 years. The psychological contract these employees were having with the organisation was very strong and they were emotionally affected due to the golden shake-hand scheme. As they were not anticipating leaving the organisation, this change initiative was a mental shock for them. Management needed an intervention to help these employees have a smooth transition to a new life style, new career and a life path altogether. Three (3) Personal Coaching sessions were allocated for selected employees. Session 1 was focused in understanding how the change decision has affected them mentally, physically, emotionally and socially. Session 2 was dedicated in helping them re-frame what happened in a way which gave them good feeling, positive, hopeful and creative thoughts for the future and develop, as well as set specific outcomes for the future. Session 3 was all about helping them establish the positive change and enhancing the positive beliefs around the new path chosen for life. - New internal resources were developed to establish lifestyles and career paths - Helped in creating purposeful individuals who once were limited to one career path - Positive beliefs, thinking patterns and behaviours were enhanced - Holistic transformations in mind and body were promoted - Two individuals committed starting their own business ventures - The Law of Requisite Variety: The system/person with the most flexibility of behaviour will control the system. - People have all the resources they need to succeed and to achieve their desired outcome. - The map is not the territory. - There is no failure, there s only feedback. This is yet another interesting case to prove the benefits of NLP in helping perceive seemingly painful, difficult and challenging life experiences in a way benefiting self and others. The very experience created emotional discomfort, fear, doubt, anger and anxiety in these individuals were transformed to happy, hopeful, optimism, and purposeful behaviours. Main NLP technique used was reframing combined with NLP presuppositions. NLP was proven an effective tool in helping people do cognitive restructuring, as a result were able to reduce and manage the stress created due to the unexpected life event. Management were praised and thanked for this initiative, which reflected as a strong proof about the reliability and credibility of the senior management team among the existing employees. Creating trust and a positive mindset is paramount for any organisational change initiative. This intervention added significant value to the business as well as to the individual affected, and the society in large. Most significant achievement of this exercise for the consultant/coach was that all these individuals were guided to identify and live a purposeful life. This is a powerful evidence to prove the effectiveness in NLP in business and life in general. 3
