2 The Basic Situation of Potato Starch Industry The annual output of potato is about 70 million tons in China, in which starch is less than 12-16%. The industry produce as many as above 3.4 million ton waste and above 55.6 million ton waste water every year Because of the lack of scientific and effective treatment technique, the potato waste and waste water produced by the industry released to anywhere, resulting in serious environmental pollution.

4 The Limitation on Utilization of Potato Waste in the Past Some chemical substance (SO 2 ) was added during the potato processing, which leads to potato residue has poor palatability and couldn t be utilized directly by livestock and poultry. In the past, a great deal of energy was consumed in some processing technique searching such as drying. Dried potato feed has lower nutritional value, lower price, and unremarkably benefit.

5 Problems Faced by Potato Starch Industry Energy saving and emission reduction is the key point for sustainable development of economy and environment, and it is also a new strategy promoted by the international community and China to change the development model of traditional economy since the 1990s. The pollution problem was being paid more attention by governments. Recently, new policies on energy saving and emission reduction are determined by governments. Energy saving and emission reduction is an important criteria for the examination of administrative achievements. The pollution problems caused by potato waste and the waste water need to be thoroughly resolved.

6 The Situation of Livestock Husbandry in China China is a biggest country in the animal husbandry and aquaculture in the world, the total amount of meat, egg and milk production were 79.8 million tons, 29.4 million tons and 32.9 million tons, respectively, in The gross output of animal husbandry is more than 1.4 trillion RMB in 2006, accounting for 34 percent of total agricultural production value, and gross output of industries (including feed industry, veterinary pharmaceuticals industry, animal product processing industry) related to animal husbandry are about 1,000 billion RMB. The animal husbandry, aquaculture and relevant processing industry have become the important industrial sectors of national economy, and the GDP they create is nearly 3 trillion RMB per year.

7 The Basic Situation of Protein Feed Market In China, the demand of plant protein resources and animal protein feed resources is more than 60 million tons per year. The Europe and America corn-soybean cake diet pattern was carried in the livestock-raising and feed industry resulting in the shortage of high-quality protein feed such as soybean meal in China. Our annual output of soybean is just over 15 million tons, much lower than USA of 80 million tons a year.

8 The Change of Soybean Meal Price The demand of soybean is increasing in china in recent years. Imports of soybean products are increased sharply due to a urgent demand of 30 million ton soybean. The price of soybean meal reached 4,800 RMB per ton because of a large mount of soybean imports in china, which leads to the price of soybean meal increased from 2,000 RMB to 4,800 RMB per ton in 2008.

9 Single Cell Protein and Nutritional Value Single cell protein (SCP), which was named as microbial protein or bacterial protein, refers to the dried microbial cells or total protein extracted from pure microbial cell culture (monoculture-algae, bacterial, filamentous fungi, yeasts, ect), which can be used as food supplement to humans (Food Grade) or animal (Feed Grade). Single cell protein is nutritious. The crude protein in SCP feed reaches as high as 40~50 % Amino acids possess complete constituents, rich in essential amino acids such as Lys and Met. Rich in nucleic acids, vitamins, inorganic salt and animal growth promoting factors. The biological value of single cell feed is better than vegetable protein feed. It can replace partly soybean meal and fish meal.

10 The Approval for SCP Feed The developed countries have produced industrially SCP with renewable resources by advanced technology and equipment, which plays a significant role for the development of feed industry. The milk production of cow can be increased 6-7 kilograms by 1 kilogram SCP, while the quality of milk can be improved The laying rate can be increased percent by feeding chicken with feed containing 10 % SCP Fifty-seven tons of feed can be saved by one ton of SCP, a SCP processing factory with an annual output of 100,000 tons is equivalent to that of nearly 1.2 billion square meters arable land to produce soybean protein feed

11 The Technique of Utilization of Potato Waste After 4.5 years of efforts, supported by R&D Projects such as National Natural Science Foundation and Project of Scientific and Technical Supporting Programs Funded by Ministry of Science & Technology, HIT Bioengineering Institute has carried out a great deal of research work according to physical and chemical characteristics of the waste Extensively collected and screened microbial strains The excellent strains were modified using biological technologies The key technique the research and development of the microorganism starter, which has passed pilot test A set of reliable new technique for processing potato waste has been established A gio-reactor for processing potato waste has been constructed

19 Technique Innovation of the Project The biodegradation and transformation of hardly degradable substance from potato waste. The research and development of microorganism starter provides the foundation for the potato waste reutilization The pilot test of microbial agents has been completed successfully. A set of reliable new technique process of single cell protein feed has been established (containing crude protein above than 42 %). The technique of utilizing the waste water by microorganism can save the nutrients need for producing protein feed, reduce the production cost and reduce pollution caused by the waste water.

21 The Price of SCP of Potato Waste Based on the current market, the price of soybean meal (42 percent crude protein) is about 4,800 RMB per ton If the production quality can be ensured under large-scale fermentation conditions, the price of SCP feed (crude protein content of SCP production more than 42 percent in the pilot test) produced by potato waste should be equivalent as compared with that of soybean meal. The cost of SCP feed is only 1,200 RMB per ton, far below soybean meal, but the nutritional value is not less than soybean meal, so this project should have a good profit.

22 Preliminary analysis on benefit The price of SCP feed is 4,800 RMB per ton The cost of production for SCP feed with starch residue by the technology is about 1800 RMB per ton Net profit ratio ( )/1800 = 111%

23 Significance of the Project This is the first time that potato waste was converted into single cell protein feed with microbial liquid fermentation technique in China. The project resolved the environmental pollution problems caused by potato waste, which has been a major obstacle in this field. The promotion and application of this technique will effectively ease the shortage of feedstuffs in livestock husbandry, and promote the development of Chinese livestock husbandry.
