2 What s CaPS? Career and Placement Services (CaPS) is the University of Alberta s campus career centre. We offer services and resources to assist all University of Alberta students and alumni in making transitions to, and within, the world of work. These services include workshops, brown bag lunch seminars, individual consultations, online job postings, a Resource Centre, the CaPS Network (electronic newsletter), career forums and career fairs. CaPS provides the essential link between those looking for work and employers. 3 How can CaPS help me plan my career? There are a variety of career options out there now how do you go about choosing the right one for you? CaPS offers a number of services for students and alumni on career decision making. Workshop Career Decision Making Strategies (all disciplines) Are you are unsure of your career path or thinking about changing your course of study? This workshop provides you with tools and information you can use for career planning. Monday, November 6: 3 to 5 p.m., 4-02 SUB *Price: $25 advance/$30/door (student price) $50 advance/$55 door (non student price) Pre-register at CaPS, SUB Individual Consultations Career Advising Our career advisors can help you to start or re-start your career planning. We cannot tell you the specific career that s best for you, but we can provide you with advice and suggest resources that you can then use to determine and pursue your career options. A voucher for a free career advising consultation is included when you register for the above workshop. Brown Bag Lunch Seminars These free seminars are a great way to learn about a variety of career decision making topics. Remember to bring your lunch. All seminars take place in SUB. Resource Centre CaPS has a library full of resources on career decision making, such as: Career Management for Scientists and Engineers answers questions about skills development and professional training, with an intense examination of work environment of academia and industry. Finding Your North: Self-Help Strategies for Science-Related Careers suggests tips on combining work/study with life balance and assessing your personal as well as professional needs. Job Choices for Science, Engineering and Technology Students is an annual publication that provides specific career planning and career management advice, including online portfolios, how to succeed at career fairs and deciding to continue your education. Note: During Careers Day, CaPS distributes limited numbers of this magazine at our booth at the fair. Come early to get your copy. Career Assessment Tool Jackson Vocational Interest Survey (JVIS) Based on years of research, the JVIS measures your interests, shows how they relate to the worlds of study and work, and provides advice to help you map out your route to an interesting career. CaPS provides the essential link between students and employers. CaPS hosts events throughout the year for students to network and meet employers who are recruiting. Job Postings With over 3,000 positions posted a year, CaPS has job postings for students in all disciplines and at all stages of career planning. The jobs are sorted by faculty. 6 How can CaPS help me find work? Career Fairs Career fairs are a great way to network with and meet employers who are recruiting students. Careers Day 2006 Put your talents to work by attending Careers Day Over 200 employers will be at Careers Day to meet and recruit students in all disciplines. Wednesday, September a.m. to 4 p.m. Butterdome Health Sciences Career Fair The Health Sciences Career Fair is your opportunity to meet with employers looking to hire students in health sciences fields such a nursing, rehabilitation medicine, medical laboratory science, health promotion studies and nutrition sciences. Saturday, October a.m. to 4 p.m. Dinwoodie Lounge Pharmacy Career Fair Meet with employers wanted to meet and recruit U of A Pharmacy students. Friday, November 17 2 to 6 p.m. Dinwoodie Lounge Information Sessions CaPS hosts employer information sessions that offers students the chance to meet with employers and learn about opportunities within their organization. Career Guide for the High-Tech Professional introduces the applicant to the business of finding work in the high-tech computers, sciences, engineering industries. This book has excellent chapters on creating an electronic resume and advanced internet search techniques. Careers in Biotech and Pharmaceuticals introduces the work searcher to a variety of career paths in the industry, provides a directory of major employers and an inside scoop on the culture and lifestyle of the industry. Job Surfing: The Sciences Research and Medicine reviews websites and online publications that can help scientists, engineers and health science researchers find employment. How can CaPS help me with my resume and cover letter? A polished resume and cover letter package is the key to securing an interview. CaPS offer workshops, seminars and individual consultations that will help you put together a resume and cover letter that will get noticed by employers! Workshops 4.0 Resumes for students in Science, Engineering and related disciplines Both novice and experienced resume writers will benefit from attending this workshop. The focus is on learning a conceptual framework developed at CaPS that can be used to develop a new resume or revise an existing one. 10 ...How can CaPS help me with my resume? Resource Centre We offer students and alumni a variety of resources on resume writing. Here are three from our collection: 101 Best Tech Resumes provides sample resumes for computer programmers, information architects and systems analysts, to name only a few of the career options available. There is also an excellent introduction to writing a noticeable electronic resume. Expert Resumes for Computer and Web Jobs shows sample resumes for programmers, designers, project managers, support professionals and game designers. Resumes in this volume include samples from entry-level to highly experience professionals. Resumes for Engineering Careers disassembles the resume into its component parts and suggests how to construct a resume for a wide variety of positions and ranging from persons seeking an entry-level position to professionals with almost a decade of experience. How can CaPS help me prepare for an interview? Being prepared for an interview is of the utmost importance. CaPS has options that suit everyone when it comes to preparing for the interview from learning about common questions to practicing in a mock interview. Workshop Acing the Interview The focus of this workshop is on how to prepare effectively for a job interview and how to respond to interview questions. 11 ...How can CaPS help me prepare for an interview? Individual Consultations Mock Interview Practice is the best way to prepare for an interview so book a mock interview at CaPS. Provide us with a copy of your resume, cover letter and a description of the job for which you are being interviewed prior to your appointment and we will develop targeted interview questions. The mock interview will be taped and played back for you as advice on how to improve your interview skills is provided. If you attend the workshop Acing the Interview for Students in Science, Engineering and related disciplines you will receive a voucher for a free individual consultation. Resource Centre Visit our Resource Centre and find an array of books on acing the interview. Boost You Interview I.Q. provides an interview question on each page and then three possible answers. You select the best answer and the book then reveals which answer was good, mediocre and bad and why, which will help you evaluate your interview skills. How Would You Move Mount Fuji? How the World s Smartest Companies Select the Most Creative Thinkers helps the candidate prepare for different kinds of interview questions. Interviewing and Salary Negotiation takes you step by step through an interviewing issue such as dealing with difficult interview questions, handling a rejection letter, negotiating a temporary position into a permanent one and works through problem with suggestions, a case and advice.
