3 Hands-on Demonstration: Undercut Machining in 3 Axis Milling For Fixed Axis Surface Contouring operations that use the Area Milling drive method, Extend Across Undercuts controls whether or not the tool path extends across undercut areas. This new option may be turned off to prevent cutting in areas where material cannot be reached. It may be turned on to prevent interruptions in the tool path and excessive engage and retract motions. For Zlevel and Flowcut Reference Tool operations, NX always extends tool paths across undercut areas. 3

4 Prerequisites: 1. You will need access to NX CAM in order to run this demonstration. 2. If you haven t done so already, download and unzip undercut_3x_milling.7z. Demo: 1. Open undercut_1.prt in NX. 2. In the Operation navigator, double-click CONTOUR_AREA to edit the operation. 3. Click Cutting Parameters. 4. Select the Strategy tab. Extend Across Undercuts is new for 3 axis Area Milling operations. The default for this option is On. 4

5 5. Click Cancel. 6. Click Generate. The tool path extends across the undercut. 7. Click Cutting Parameters. 8. Clear the Extend Across Undercuts check box. 9. Click OK. 10. Click Generate. The tool path does not extend across the undercut. 11. Click OK to complete the operation. 5

6 12. Try various cut angles and cut patterns. Angle from XC = Non-steep Cut Pattern = ZigZag Extend Across Undercuts - Off Extend Across Undercuts - On Non-steep Cut Pattern = Follow Periphery Extend Across Undercuts - Off Extend Across Undercuts - On 13. Close the part without saving. For Zlevel and Flowcut Reference Tool operations, there is no new user interface that allows you to turn extend across undercuts off. The tool paths always extend across undercut areas. 14. Open undercut_2.prt in NX. 6

7 15. In the Operation Navigator, click FLOWCUT_REF_TOOL. Previously, the tool path did not extend completely across the undercut area. 16. Right-click FLOWCUT_REF_TOOL and select Generate. In NX10.0.2, the tool path now extends completely across undercut area. 17. Click ZLEVEL_PROFILE. Previously, the tool path did not extend completely across the undercut area. 18. Right-click ZLEVEL_PROFILE and select Generate. 7
