3 CONTENT AND MISSION Le Devoir was launched on January 10 th, 1910, by journalist and politician Henri Bourassa. From the start, and for all the duration of his tenure, he made sure Le Devoir would remain fully independent from the powerbrokers of his time. Le Devoir still lives by the ideals of its founding figure. In its maiden edition, Bourassa explained the title and purpose of the publication as such: «To ensure the triumph of ideas over appetites, of the public good over partisan interests, there is but one mean, which is to awake in the people, and above all in the ruling classes, a sense of public duty in all its forms: religious, national and civic duties.» 1910 Henri Bourassa

Add to that the support of groups like Friends of Le Devoir, who collects donations, and our employees, who have a stake in the company Le Devoir is now more than a daily newspaper, published six days a week. It also claims a major digital footprint in Quebec s media landscape with a web site, a mobile app, and a tablet app, not to mention a growing presence on video channels. The mobile app, our latest product, was downloaded by more than 100,000 people in less than six months and it gathers strong interest from our users. Le Devoir of today is a pluralist media, rooted in the tradition of the North- American liberal press. Praised and respected for its engaging editorial orientation, it is a venue of choice for the many stakeholders willing to engage in a public conversation over the state of public affairs in Quebec, and the challenges ahead of us.
