1 Welcome Letter Business CEO: We are looking forward to your school s on-site simulation visit to JA BizTown and hope that you and your team are as well. We know you are learning a lot about operating your own business and handling your own checking account. Before long, you will be able to put your knowledge to work and, hopefully, see success for both yourself and your business. You will find many important papers in this BizPrep Packet. All pages must be read and/or completed before coming to JA BizTown and must be brought with you on the day of your onsite visit. There are also several tasks to be completed in preparation for your visit. Please use the checklist below to assure that all paperwork and tasks are completed. The Business Cost Sheet has been completed and checked for accuracy. The Loan Application has been completed and is ready to be taken to the JA BizTown Bank. The Radio Ad has been written clearly and legibly. The Newspaper Ad is completed neatly and correctly. The Television Ad is prepared correctly. The Philanthropy Pledge Sheet has been signed, indicating your business pledge to support charitable giving. Each employee has: written his/her name on the top left corner of every personal check and deposit ticket. written his/her account number on their checkbook cover, bottom right corner of every personal check, and deposit ticket. 4 Newspaper Advertisement The newspaper published at JA BizTown will consist of articles and ads. Each business is responsible for determining the text for their business advertisement. On the day of the visit, the newspaper staff will collect this advertisement from your business and lay out the pages using the information you provide below. Your advertisement may need to be edited to fit into the newspaper. (Characters include letters, spaces and punctuation.) Using no more than 140 characters (15-20 words), write below a descriptive advertisement for your business. Be creative! Note: You will not know what items you are selling until you arrive at JA BizTown. Take this opportunity to advertise the quality characteristics of your business. Let people know what a great staff/business you will be running so they know why they should visit your business. 4 4

5 Radio Advertisement On the lines provided below, create a radio commercial for your business. A 30-second commercial is about 110 words. Print it clearly so that your advertisement can be read by the Disc Jockey. Time: 30 seconds Note: You will not know what items you are selling until you arrive at JA BizTown. Take this opportunity to advertise the quality characteristics of your business. Let people know what a great staff/business you will be running so they know why they should visit your business. 5 5

6 Television Advertisement On the lines provided below, create a television commercial for your business. A 30 to 45 second commercial is about 110 to 170 words. Print it clearly so that your advertisement can easily be read on the air. You may bring simple props approved by your teacher for filming at JA BizTown. If possible, 1-2 people from your business may be involved in filming your commercial. Due to time constraints, Broadcast Center Staff may read your commercial they will not necessarily act it out as you would. Across America, individuals may demonstrate their citizenship by donating their time, skills, and money to charitable organizations. Here at JA BizTown, student citizens have the opportunity to donate money to a worthy JA BizTown non-profit organization. Solicits song requests from JA Staff. CAMERA OPERATOR 1. Reviews and understands processes for effective filming and how to operate camera equipment. 2. Films Opening Town Meeting. 3. Films business ads and studio interviews. 4. Works in close partnership with the Production Assistant, Host/Anchor, and Reporter. DJ 1. Selects music for airtime. 2. Completes scheduling of on-air play list, news and sports reports, ads, weather, announcements, etc. to avoid dead air. 3. Clearly reads ads, announcements, and song requests with enthusiasm and energy. 4. Assists Ad Executive with greeting customers, taking song requests, and processing payments, when necessary. HOST / ANCHOR 1. Writes, practices, and reads an introductory speech on camera. 2. Works in close partnership with the Camera Operator and Production Assistant to film television advertisements from all businesses. 3. Conducts on camera interviews with business representatives. 8 8 PRODUCTION ASSISTANT 1. Works as a team with the Host/Anchor and Camera Operator. 2. Collects television ads from businesses and escorts a business representative to the television studio to read that ad on camera. 3. Helps organize business representatives for on camera interviews with the Host/Anchor. 4. Holds interview cue cards to assist in smooth interviews. REPORTER 1. Interviews citizens for newsworthy stories. 2. Writes news stories utilizing the reporter guidelines. 3. Works with DJ and TV Production Assistant to schedule time to read news stories on air. 17
