57 grinding Diamond and CBN grinding points Galvanically bonded diamond and CBN grinding tools What are the characteristics of galvanic bonding? What are the differences between diamond and CBN? What is special about galvanic bonding? Galvanically bonded tools are coated on one side with an abrasive usually diamond or CBN on a metal support. The abrasive grains are bonded in an electroplated nickel layer.they protrude from the bonding far enough to create a very open, sharp cutting tool with exceptionally large chip spaces that prevent clogging even at high stock removal rates. Sharp-edged, extremely hard abrasive grains provide maximum cutting efficiency, i.e. they allow cool grinding combined with high stock removal rates. Galvanically bonded tools can be used for wet and for dry grinding. Diamond and CBN are not competitors but complements to each other as abrasives. 68 Honing stones DEGUSSIT grinding stones and files DEGUSSIT grinding stones and files The oxide-ceramic precision grinding tools consists of mixed crystal of extraordinary hardness, the main component of which is aluminium oxide. Chrome oxide additives give the typically red colour. In nature, this crystal appears as ruby. The precision grinding tools have no bonding agent and because of the great hardness of the sintered crystals have a high resistance to wear and change in shape. These properties are particularly important for precision work to achieve an excellent surface finish and accuracy of shape. The low wear also has economic advantages. When machining using precision grinding tools, not only is metal removed from the surface of the workpiece but if the finest types are used it can also be hardened and polished by pressure. They are the ideal hand tools for all grinding, deburring and precision grinding work, particularly also for resharpening tools of all kinds. Furthermore, they are particularly suitable for making chamfers on cutting tools, notching profiles, working shaped parts of hardened steel and also processing other hard or abrasive materials such as quartz, glass, ceramics. The work can be carried out with the tools either wet or dry. Dampening with petroleum or cutting oil is sufficient. Cleaning is by wiping with a grease-free agent.
