2 English-AHS-CONTEST 2014 WIFI Dornbirn Tuesday, 25 February 2014, 08:30 13:40 Format 1. Conditions of Participation See application form ( Teilnahmebedingungen ). 2. Procedure Round 1: PANEL DISCUSSION Preparation time (15 minutes): Candidates are provided with the discussion topics. In addition, each candidate receives a particular question he /she is supposed to refer to in a one-minute opening statement at the beginning of the panel discussion. Panel discussion (15 20minutes): Each group consists of 4-5 candidates. The discussion is introduced with a short opening statement by each candidate (see above) and is moderated by a native speaker. The 8 best candidates move on to round 2. Round 2: SELF-PRESENTATION and SPEECH Preparation time (10 minutes): For their speech the candidates are offered two topics they can choose from. Together with their topics, they are also given bullet points, which they are supposed to cover in their speeches. Round 2 starts with short self-presentations (about 1 minute long), in which the candidates talk about the meaning of languages in their lives. After this, they continue with their speeches (about 3 minutes). The 4 best candidates move on to the final round. Round 3: Final Round: ROLE-PLAY Preparation time (10 minutes) Role-Play (5 minutes): The remaining four candidates individually take part in a roleplay with a native-speaker. The winner will represent Vorarlberg at the WIFI Sprachmania in Vienna.

Assessment Criteria Language: Accuracy, register, range of vocabulary, idiomatic expressions, intonation, pronunciation Contents: Variety of ideas and arguments, knowledge of subject, relevance, persuasiveness, coherence, awareness of audience, coverage of bullet points (speech) Social Competence: Interacting, reacting, taking initiative, identifying with a certain role 4. 4 TOPICS CONTEST 2013 Round 1: Panel -Discussion (15-20 minutes) Topic: ADVERTISING Entertaining? Dishonest? A type of art? A waste of money? A useful way to find out about products? In Britain, the ASA (Advertising Standards Authority) controls advertising. Here are some of its rules: Advertisements must be legal, decent, honest and truthful. There can be no TV or cinema advertising of cigarettes. Advertisements must not claim or imply that alcohol can enhance confidence or popularity. Advertisements should not make children feel unpopular for not buying a product. What do you think about such rules? OPENING STATEMENTS: 1. How does advertising work? How do adverts try to manipulate us? What different techniques are used in advertising? 2. What are the most important pros of advertising? Describe why adverts are important in our economy. 3. Analyse the cons as well as the possible dangers of advertising. 4. Controversial ads: Provide examples and give your opinion. 5. What role does advertising play in your life? In what different media are you confronted with advertising? Info about the procedure in the panel discussion: All candidates first give their one-minute opening statements and then start a discussion about the questions above.

5 Round 2: Speech (3 minutes) 1) Prepare a short self-presentation (about 1 minute long), in which you talk about the meaning of languages in your life. 2) After this, continue with your speech (3-4 minutes). For your speech, choose 1 of the following topics and answer the questions below. You may of course also add your own ideas in your speech, but you need to cover as many of the following points as possible: What are the most important benefits of sport? 1. Sports What about the dangers that are connected with sport, in particular with thrill sports? Give some examples of dangerous kinds of sports. Sports contests and drugs: Is taking drugs cheating or is it necessary to be able to compete in today s sporting world? What do you think could be done to stop drug use and cheating in sport? What role does sport play in your life? Are today s teenagers victims of fashion? What are the most important factors when you choose your clothes? 2. Fashion / beauty Beauty: What do you think about cosmetic surgery? Would you go for it? Is beauty an advantage or is it not? In what situations could it be either one? Do you agree with the following statements? To be beautiful you have to suffer. There are many disadvantages in being good-looking. You don t have to be physically perfect to be attractive. You just have to be self-confident. It is much more important for women to be attractive than for men. You can know a person s character from their clothes.

6 Round 3: Role-Play (5 minutes) Topic: A YEAR ABROAD After finishing school, you decide that you would like to spend a year working in the UK. Out of curiosity you apply to Buckingham Palace and out of hundreds of applicants are given the opportunity to attend a job interview for the following position: Royal fan mail letter writer Job responsibilities include: Opening and administering the Queen s fan mail. Translating letters from German into English (one other language would be an advantage). Writing thank you letters. Giving the Queen a weekly update on fan mail. The interview will last approximately five minutes. It s a once in a lifetime opportunity: go and give it all you ve got!
