The importance of sustainable development for the cosmetics industry Cosmetics Europe s Mission: support the development of an innovative, sustainable, competitive and respected cosmetics industry in Europe, which best serves consumers. Objective with regard to sustainable development: Establish Cosmetics Europe as a credible and respected partner in the sustainability debate, representing an industry that promotes sustainable development in Europe, through common principles and initiatives. Activities planned for (1) Enhance awareness and knowledge within the industry Follow developments at EU and international level Actively participate in shaping policy and legislation Communicate on achievements and vision for the future Enhance synergies with other consumer goods industries, suppliers and retailers to identify common goals and actions 9

Activities planned for (2) Contribute to the development of tools for life-cycle assessment, environmental footprinting, etc. Develop positions on sustainable use of raw materials Develop guidance on how to apply life-cycle thinking for several key product categories Establish environmental profiles for key product categories, to enable broad-brush estimation of industry s environmental footprint 10

11 5. Activities planned for (3) Address the sustainable sourcing of ingredients; Contribute to the sustainable consumption of rinse-off cosmetics; Demonstrate the societal benefits of cosmetic products. 11
