When Abugov and his partner, Joe Scanlon, took over the new team they played most of their home games in Kingston while most players lived in Ottawa; most practices were held in Ottawa. Now all the players who have signed for the 2013 season will live in Kingston and the surrounding area to attend regular evening practices in Kingston. We want people to see our players in the community and we want people if they wish to come and watch us practice. What about the team s long-term goal of signing mainly Canadians? The statistics are in our favour, says Abugov. A study by Statistics Canada found that 20 years ago, swimming was the most popular sport for Canadian youngsters. Baseball came second. Hockey and soccer tied for third. By 2005 that had changed dramatically, 20 per cent of Canadian young people ages five to 14 regularly participating in organized sport were playing soccer. Swimming was second at 12 per cent. Hockey was third. We know that some of those young people will want to continue playing, moving on in time to top-level professional soccer. By bringing in good international players and having them practice and play with Canadians we hope to improve the level of soccer in Canada and in our case in Kingston.
