2 CATHNEWS PROFILE In 1997, Fr Michael Kelly SJ wanted to start a communications outlet for the Australian Church. He knew he wanted a digital publication, but didn t know how he could fund it. So he started a cooperative buying group for the Church and not-for-profits, which in turn underwrote CathNews. CathNews launched on August 1, 1999, as Catholic Telecommunications. At that time, it was an electronic newsletter, sent every morning to the small but growing number of Members of Church Resources. Within a couple of years, the website went live and the name became CathNews. CathNews is now award-winning, and the leading faith-based publication in Australia. We have a fully integrated series of digital platforms Facebook (more than 120,000 in our community and showing strong growth), Twitter, YouTube and LinkedIn. We have also expanded our suite of publications to include Catholic Australia. While our stable and our channels are expanding and growing, our mission remains the same to serve our Readers and our Subscribers with all the news they need to be informed about Catholics and Catholicism from home and around the world.
