3 Background Now in its Fourth Year the Waitakere Moon Festival is a well established and much loved occasion which celebrates the cultural diversity of our city, with a particular focus on Chinese language and traditions through the sharing of music, dance, arts/crafts and cuisine. Moon Festivals, or autumn harvest festivals, are celebrated in early September throughout Asia. The festival also celebrates the moon goddess Chang Er, and is sometimes called the Moon cake Festival. Moon cakes symbolise the gathering of friends and family and are offered to the gods for a good harvest. In days of old people paid respect to the Chang Er and her pet the jade rabbit. According to legend Chang Er was once a mortal woman married to a mighty but power hungry man named Hou Yi. One day he stole the elixir of life from a goddess. In order to save the people from his tyranny Chang Er drank the elixir whereupon she was transformed into a fairy and flew to the moon. Although the custom of paying homage to the fairy and the rabbit is gone, the moon festival and the moon cakes which have come to symbolise it remain an important celebration of the seasons, family and community. Indeed, the moon festival story has another chapter. Legend has it that, during the Yuan dynasty (A.D ) China was ruled by the Mongolian people. Leaders from the preceding Sung dynasty were unhappy at submitting to foreign rule, but could do little to resist without a way to co-ordinate a rebellion without it being discovered. The leaders of the rebellion, knowing that the Moon Festival was drawing near, and that the invaders would not celebrate it, ordered the making of special cakes. Baked into each moon cake was a message with an outline of the uprising. On the night of the Moon Festival, the rebels successfully attacked and overthrew the government. What followed was the establishment of the Ming dynasty (A.D ). Today, moon cakes are also eaten to commemorate this legend. Waitakere City with support from its sister cities in Ningbo in China and Kakogawa in Japan is proud to be hosting this two day festival which showcases the food, entertainment and traditions of the east and the cultural diversity of New Zealand. 4 Overview Festival Dates Friday 6th and Saturday 7th October 2006 Aims and Objectives Create a focus for celebration and fun in Waitakere City. Encourage participation by all businesses in New Lynn, but especially to provide opportunities for participation by the growing number of Asian businesses in that community. Use of the festival as a promotional/ marketing opportunity for businesses in the region. Encourage displays of ethnic / cultural artefacts, arts and crafts. Bring the community together to embrace and celebrate the diversity of its residents and to share in the wisdom, knowledge and history of its elder people. The Programme The 2006 Moon Festival will feature music and dance performances, art demonstrations, martial arts displays and an extensive array of Asian cuisine and handicrafts. Day one of the Festival commences with a maori welcome, the traditional Lion Dance and a full entertainment programme. Day two of the festival will see a bustling market place, demonstrations and displays, hands on activities for young and old, and a full programme of quality entertainment from the many different Asian cultures, as well as from the Pacific Islands. This is a festival of colour and celebration - of family celebration - a spectacle of dancing, music and sheer energy which provides New Zealanders with a taste of foreign culture while at the same time providing the Asian community with a taste of home. The Venue The Waitakere Moon Festival has since its inception in 2003 been located at the New Lynn Community Centre. Recently built, the venue situated in the heart of New Lynn offers excellent access to the resident communities of the area in a facility which has become a centre in more than just name. In 2006 the Moon Festival returns to the New Lynn Community Centre for the last time. The increasing popularity of the event has made a venue change in 2007 a necessity. Accordingly, the festival is seeking appropriate sponsorship to facilitate the relocation to the Trusts Stadium in subsequent years. 2 Moon Festival Sponsorship Proposal 06
