Adrian Naidoo Position Buhler How to improve quality/reduce mistakes and the importance of food safety.

Example: How to feed >9 billion people by 2050? 30% of all food produced gets lost from the field to fork. LOSS IN TONS (MILLION) 100% PRODUCTION HANDLING, STORAGE PROCESSING PRIMARY & SECONDARY DISTRIBUTION CONSUMPTION 91.8 Bühler can intervene in the handling and storage as well as in the processing. Focus on sustainable value chains drives our innovation.

Enhanced food & feed safety Two thirds of our business is related to the food & feed industry today. As a key player in the food production chain, we have a role to protect public health and support the growth of our customers through sustainable food safe solutions. It is evident that our solutions must be compliant with all regulations but we have even higher goals. We want to set the industry standards in food & feed safety and have a leading role there. That means we have to provide smart solutions in hygienic design, cleaning, automation & sensing, elimination of spoilage or solutions for traceability, BUT these solutions must be affordable for our customers. Can you contribute to industry wide food safety? How can we grow our market together? Can you support with better hygienic design, better automation, clean in place solutions, inactivation technologies?

New approaches for education & training Proposals that extend capabilities to train and educate Bühler employees and customers are sought. The ability to deliver high quality training, cost effectively and tailored to a range of education levels would provide more information access for developing market customers. Opportunities could lie in remote learning and training, on-line courses, shared learning programmes etc.

Example: Ensuring food and feed safety. Through Bühler s advanced cleaning technologies. FOOD Mycotoxins, in particular aflatoxins, are an emerging safety hazard in agricultural crops. With only a tiny fraction of the kernels affected, an entire lot may be unsafe for use in food or feed. Bühler developed a cleaning process for the effective reduction of aflatoxins in contaminated maize lots. Helping to reduce post-harvest food losses and to ensure safe food and feed through advanced cleaning technologies.

Intelligent processes Technologies for developing markets Business model (new revenue streams) Food Safety is a one focus area in the strategic framework of innovation at Bühler. Opening innovation Food & feed safety Animal & human nutrition Engineering sustainability

3.6 Food Safety in Buhler pulses processing plants Buhler plants meet the following criteria to maintain high standards of food safety Dust free environments No cross contamination between product streams Use of permissible construction material for product contact surfaces Plant design, structure & layout should adhere food safety guidelines Strict personal hygiene and sanitation standards Buhler plants easily achieve HACCP, ISO or other food safety certification.

Bühler strives to be the preferred Food Safety solution provider. Develop our portfolio Build our credibility Educate our people

Food safety challenges Hazards. Pathogenic Bacteria Salmonella Listeria E. Coli, etc. Biological Chemical Physical Mycotoxin in cereals due to mold growth on the field or upon storage Environmental Pollution from the air, water and soil, such as the case with toxic metals, PCBs and dioxins Food contact material Pesticides, animal drugs and other agrochemicals Foreign material (FM) Glass Stones Metals Plastics Wood Insects Other items Undeclared allergens like gluten, nuts, soy, etc., in food Food borne diseases Staphylococcal enteritis (vomiting/ diarrhea) Botulism, etc Processing or adulteration Food additives and contaminants Extraneous vegetable matter (EVM) Sticks, Stems Shells, Husk Foreign seeds Appearance Discoloured, diseased Mis-shape Damaged (insect)

Examples of Bühler Food & Feed From hygienic design. Safety solutions....over inactivation technologies. to system solutions for mycotoxin control Kubex, Pellet Press Controlled Steam Condensation Process for Pasteurization SORTEX Optical sorting 20 % less energy consumption and hygienc design Almonds before & after pasteurization

Modern Manufacturing Solutions to Aid Food Safety. Inactivation technologies Pasteurisation Sterilisation Roasting Biological Chemical Physical Mechanical solutions Sizing/Sieving De-stoners Gravity tables Aspirators Blanching Sensor based sorting Camera Laser Hyper-spectral X-Ray Good Pre-harvest & Post-harvest practices

conveyor LBCB. Sanitation design fulfills feed and food safety standards. LBCB MNKA vs. LBCB equipped with sanitation options - round deflection sheet in return end - sanitation execution chain - sanitation outlet flap Test scenario kg flour filled into 10m conveyor - runtime of 90 seconds - measure residue material in conveyor LBCB and MNKA with about same amount of residue material (Material amount difference lower 50 g)

The new universal belt and bucket elevator LBEB. Sanitation design fulfills feed and food safety standards. Optional round boot Constant clearance between buckets and bottom Retrofit option (same housing as square boot) Optional round casings

Customer training. On-site training for plant and product development engineers, operators, maintenance and QC personnel Direct transmission of process knowledge by Bühler experts Practice oriented training Updated documentation of installed machinery Best equipped training centers Seminars Well trained employees ensure optimal plant performance Maximum plant availability through correct maintenance

An example of our training efforts in Africa. Introducing vocational training in Africa. Demand for staple foods has risen sharply in Africa. Food companies are investing heavily in new capacities. Efforts are frequently hindered by lack of trained staff. Bühler founded the African Milling School, training millers from all over Africa. Helping to improve food supply in Africa with its technologies as well as with its knowledge.

Food Safety is part of our promise to engineer customer success. ENGINEERING CUSTOMER SUCCESS.
