Case studies of Farmers benefited due to the interventions made by the trained officers Case study-1 A HOUSEWIFE TURNED TO A MULTI MICRO ENTREPRENEUR Ms Sheeja an ordinary house wife is a resident of Idanaad village, Chatanoor block of Kollam district. She had two young kids of 8 & 5 years age whose husband Mr. Siva Prakash is an employee in a nearby factory. Unlike other house wives she always had a dream to start an enterprise and fetch additional income to her family. Sheeja who completed her Xth standard always used to think about what enterprise can I take up and who comes in my way. Her dreams were neither encouraged by her parents, inlaws nor her friends who rather tried to counselled to take care of her family as an ordinary house wife. Ms.Sheeja never lost her patience but always expressed her longstanding desire with her husband Mr. Siva Prakash. Sheeja who looks after agriculture in her half acre land started attending training programmes organized by the Department of Agriculture with the advise, cooperation and encouragement given by her husband. She attended all the meetings organized for the benefit of farmers whatever be the distance.. The regular enthusiasm and interest exhibited by Sheeja was noticed by the officers Sri Soman Deputy director (Trg.) and his colleague Ms. Thejaseebhai, AO Krishi Bhavan, Chathanoor block of kollam district, motivated and encouraged her by providing necessary guidance & technical support, forward and backward linkages in starting all the interlinked & allied ventures of her interest. The Dy. Director (Trg.) Mr. Soman was motivated at EEI where he attended a course on Production and use of AV aids he also learnt the techniques of motivation. By virtue of the nature of his job and thereby as he was in the training wing he also motivated has team to need the clientele towards their development.

2 A young dynamic, enthusiastic women with the most important characteristic of innovativeness is now a multi talented entrepreneur in agriculture mgt & allied fields is managing the multiple activities like mushroom cultivation, quail farming, Bee keeping, vegetable cultivation, azolla cultivation, vermi compost, Pickles chutney powders so on along with her regular agriculture. She is now a role model in the entire Panchayat of Idanaad Panchayat, Karangoda block. As a mini multi micro entrepreneur she is using 50 cents of land for her micro enterprise activities. She has taken up the farming of quail birds of more than hundred and sells quail Rs. 12/- dozen, cultivates mushrooms & supplies to the hotels & in the market, also sells spawn for other mushroom cultivators. Recognizing her skills she is appointed as a regular master trainer for training programmes on Mushroom cultivation. In addition Ms. Sheeja who is also maintaining a vermi culture unit is using the left over Paddy straw from mushroom cultivation and selling the Rs 5 per kg & earth 50 ps per worm. 5/- kg. In addition she also has taken up cultivation of vegetables in polythene bags on terrace. She is a pioneer in starting Azolla cultivation from 3 years with 6 beds drawing 6 kgs / day from each bed Rs 10/-per kg. She has established a bio gas plant and the slurry is used for her crops banana, turmeric, paddy, betel vine & vegetables in her ½ acres of land. The Government of Kerala recognized the services of MS Sheeja and awarded as Best Women Youth Farmer award during the year Thus Mrs.Sheeja a self determined women fulfilled her dreams through self effort, confidence and hardwork.

5 CASE STUDY-2 Shirley Pavan a 29 years old women having 10 years kid whose husband works at Dhubai is living with her old Parents in Charakkara Panchayat of Chathanur, Kottam district Her father had two cows of non descriptive variety wife very low milk yields. Thus as their living became difficult day by day they approached the local dairy extension officer Mr. Ravindran Pillai of Chathanur Panchayat, Mr. Ravidran Pillai who attended a training programme on HRD at EEI during He explained the follow up team that he learnt several skills of personality development where he could improve himself and he also started building the confidence of the needy people in meeting their livelihoods. That way he recognized the inbuilt capabilities of Smt. Shirley Pavan encouraged her to join as the member of existing cooperative. He also motivated & guided to take a loan of 1.5 lakhs with a one time subsidy of Rs. 50,000/- from dairy department.she purchased 23 cows where 10 cows yield 70 ltrs (HF) and 13 cows (Jersey) yields 43 ltrs of milk. Her parents and herself are involved in the management of dairy, and Ms Shirley who is now secretary of the society consisting of 230 members of Charakkara milk cooperative society of her panchayat.one more credit added to her achievement list is she is also studying M.Com through distance education. Thus a shy house wife turned into a micro entrepreneur in dairy with the efforts of Mr. Ravindran Pillai who inturn

6 appreciates EEI for developing his human resources and turn to help his clientele to raise their levels of confidence. 7 STRENGTH OF SELF HELP AND MUTUAL HELP A SUCCESS STORY Case study-3 Two hundred and forty farmers with a land holding ranging between 1-4 acres formed a society Kurugapada punyapranothi society, north, village Paravoor of Abala Purzha block, Allapuzha district were taking up paddy cultivation on cooperative basis under the able guidance & Technical advise of Smt. V.M. Seena they are cultivating the land in 104 hectares. Mrs. Seena is providing technical guidance through Pre season and on season training programmes to the farmers of the society When enquired about her skills she replied that the training at EEI on Training Management enriched her skills. Earlier she had no concept / skills in TNA, the systematic training design the training etc. methodologies after the practical exposure at EEI she

8 expressed that she is now analyzing the training needs before the cultivation of the crop and based on the practical need she is conducting pre & on season programme she also expressed that she is conducting the training by various interactive methods & by use of AV aids to convince the farmers. She also felt happy that she is developing a check list to fulfill all requirements.the farmers expressed that they are getting an yield of 25 Q / ha of cost Rs. 900/- per quintal. When enquired about the collective activities Sri. P.T. Ponnappan, committee member holding one acre land, explained that pumping of extra water, bunds formation, seed procure pest application, harvesting & marketing were done collectively. When enquired about the problems in collective farming they expressed that labour shortage as the major constraint. They felt happy that the officer is providing technical guidance and advice whenever required and they thanked the Dept of Agriculture for providing the needful support whenever required.
