13 Introduction

14 The agricultural sector is regarded as one of the main productive sectors in the economy; it employs a considerable number of agricultural farm holders and their families, in addition to being the primary source of all food products and a key source of raw materials necessary for manufacturing, which increases the sector s contribution to the GDP. As such, statistical information and data are regarded as the base of agricultural development plans. This requires accurate and credible statistical data that lead to right decisions and which can be adopted by decision-makers and plan developers to draw plans in all production, marketing, and consumption fields. The significance of agriculture sector as supportive to food security increased the importance of statistics and modern methodologies of collecting and analyzing data; in addition to the numerous challenges the sector faces, which have increased over the past few years, in terms of water scarcity and soaring prices of agricultural commodities. Plant statistics include data on the number of farms, agricultural areas, total cultivated lands, as well as the quantity and value of agricultural production. Animal statistics include the number of sheep, goats, cows, camels, and poultry. Fisheries statistics include data on the quantity and value of the fish caught in. 46 .7 of Green House Greenhouse agriculture protected agriculture aims at optimizing the cultivated area to the maximum extent possible in order to increase the production of the same unit as well as harvest early crop at non-traditional time of some vegetable crops that are difficult to cultivate in the exposed land exposed. This achieves major benefits, especially for export. The farmer managed to divide plants according to their environmental needs into winter plants, which bear low degrees such as cabbage and cauliflower, and summer plants such as tomato, eggplants, cucumbers and water melons. This led the farmer to cultivate these varieties in the timing that suits its production. The agriculture progress helps farmers recognizing the needs of these plants including the right temperature and humidity... etc., thus providing an artificial climate to get a crop of summer vegetables at non-traditional time. This allows the farmer to replace the traditional agriculture methods with modern systems, which offer both winter and summer vegetables during the whole year. In, the number of greenhouses in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi equaled 8,363 with a total area of,85 donums, an increase of % compared to 9. 63 . Livestock Statistics

64

65 . Introduction The livestock sector is one of the key elements responsible for achieving development and integration in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, it is deemed to be one of the most important sub-activities of the agriculture sector. Thus, providing data on the sector is very essential to prepare development plans and integrated programs that can be implemented in a scientific manner. This helps provide the basic food needs and meet the growing demand for livestock products due to population growth. Availability of information on livestock sector helps establish an economic and social structure that offers community members equal opportunity to develop their communities. It is known that the march of human evolution began ascending since the adoption of grazing, and agriculture. While agriculture has captured most of the human interests, grazing remained concomitant to agriculture, securing the animal food for the society. Thus, large social groups were specialized in animal husbandry and grazing. The Arab society was not moving away from this course, animal husbandry spread in the country side and rural areas, especially desert areas, which was and remains the basis of livestock including sheep, goats and camels. However, due to the economic and social development and the transition of agricultural production to the commodity form, in addition to other factors, animal husbandry declined in the countryside. As a result, many areas of the country side became a consumer of animal products. This section includes detailed data on the numbers of livestock by type and region in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. It also includes detailed data on the numbers of commercial farms and its area, capacity and production, in addition to data on the medical tests and follow-ups to maintain the health and safety of the livestock sector. 64 Annual Bulletin of Agricultural Statistics

The Emirate of Abu Dhabi livestock imports in amounted to AED 89.8 million compared with AED million in 9. It can be said that the lack of integration between animal and plant production, contributes to the retreat of animal production, and increases the import of livestock in light of the limited fodder production as a result of water shortages due to the climate change that resulted in limited rainfall. Further, the shortcomings of the enacted policies to support the agricultural sector, and the cultural change pertinent to working in the agricultural sector and breeding livestock leads to a retreat in breeding livestock. 65
