1 About the Breed: The Tharparkar is an important dual-purpose breed raised primarily for its milking potential. The name Tharparkar has been derived from the place of its origin the THAR DESERT. The home tract of the breed is Tharparkar district of South-East Sindh in Pakistan. In India these animals are now found along with the Indo-Pak border covering Western Rajasthan (Jaiselmer & Barmer) and up to RUNN OF KUTCH in Gujrat. Built up: Average animals of the Tharparkar breed are deep, strongly built, medium-sized, with straight limbs and good feet. The usual color of the cattle is white or gray. In males, the gray color may deepen, particularly on the fore and hind quarters. The head is of medium size, the forehead broad and flat or slightly convex above eyes. The eyes are full and bright. The eyelashes are black and there is a small ring of black on the eyelids. The ears are somewhat long, broad and semi-pendulous and face forwards. The hump in males is moderately well developed, firm and placed in front of the withers. The dewlap is of medium size and the skin is fine and mellow.

2 About us: This station is one among the seven Cattle Breeding Farms, established in the year 1967 by the Government of India, Ministry of Agriculture, Department of Animal Husbandry Dairying and Fisheries to produce high pedigree male calves of Tharparkar breed to cater the needs of the farmers, States A.H. Departments/Union Territories/ Non-governmental organizations and persons engaged in cattle development work. Objectives: Progressive genetic improvement of the herd for milk production by scientific selection. Production and distribution of superior bulls for breeding purpose to State A.H. Departments/Union Territories/ Non-governmental organizations and persons engaged in cattle development work. Conservation of threatened indigenous breed of national importance. Training/Demonstration of scientific breeding and farm management practices to the farmers. Location: This Farm is located 10 km. from Suratgarh City and 60 km. from Sri Ganganagar (District Head Quarter) on Nation Highway No.-15.
