South Afr ica s combine harvester sales continue to show strong growth ahead of a bumper crop this season. Recent agricultural machinery sales data showed that in March 2017, combine harvester sales were up by 21% from the previous month and 64% from the corresponding period last year, with 23 units sold. Wandile Sihlobo AGBIZ Agbiz e-newsletter 7 April 2017 WORTH NOTING IS that the sales have been on the upward trend since the beginning of the year and March was the highest. The growth in combine harvester sales mirror the positive prospects of summer crops production. The overall summer crop production is estimated at 16,7 million tonnes, which is a 78% annual increase. Meanwhile, the tractor sales declined by 24% from the previous months, with 515 units sold. With that said, this is 19% higher than the corresponding period last year, ahead of the winter crop planting season, which is set to commence over the next few weeks. Overall, the optimism in the agricultural machinery market could be shortlived, as the weakening rand against the US dollar could increase costs of the equipment. In addition, escalating farm debt could also reduce some farmers ability to further invest in machinery.

Julle is fundamenteel gesproke in n baie goeie bedryf.

Bakers honour Lillibeth Moolman as a consumer champion The SA Chamber of Baking presented Ms Lillibeth Moolman with a certificate of appreciation in acknowledgement for her contribution to the baking industry over many years. HE HAS SERVED the wheat in- in numerous capacities, Sdustry from being a member of the Wheat Board, a founding member of the Winter Cereal Trust, a member of the Wheat Forum and its Steering Committee, to mention but a few, said Colin Hardy, President of the Chamber in his tribute at the annual general meeting. He described Lillibeth as a consumer champion who will always be remembered by the baking industry for never letting go of the key quality determinant of dry solids. She has been a true servant of the consumers of this country and the baking industry is indebted to her. The certificate was presented by Vice President, Lorraine Bezuidenhout.

10 Bakers support local wheat production South African millers and bakers have, until now, purchased the entire wheat crop each year and if the quality and price is right, it is unlikely that this would change, says the President of the South African Chamber of Baking, Colin Hardy. IN HIS PRESIDENTI AL report at the Chamber s annual general meeting, he added that bakers must be realistic. If the country s agricultural sector cannot or will not produce more wheat of a competitive quality and price, South Africa will become increasingly dependent on imported wheat. This is not a situation that we as a Chamber wish to adhere to. The Chamber undertakes to positively support initiatives to revive the entire industry. I am very happy to report that in the past year this Chamber, and the National Chamber of Milling, have worked closely together for the best interest of the industry, and will continue to do so. Mr Hardy assured all stakeholders that the Chamber, through its committees, continues to apply its collective energy and focus on the issues and challenges that are both relevant and important, not just to the baking industry, but to the entire wheat to bread value chain. As a country we are continuously reminded that South Africa is part of a global community and we need to play the game according to rules that that are set by international players. We cannot appoint the referees or line judges ei- ther. A country that thinks it can change the rules, ignore its own shortcomings, and focus only on its immediate environment, will soon find itself in the relegation zones of every league it plays in. ECONOMY Referring to the economy, Mr Hardy says the rand has been the beneficiary of global uncertainty. The improved exchange rate has more to do with external uncertainty than local improvements in GDP, productivity, unemployment numbers and political stability. The relatively stronger rand was beneficial to millers and bakers in terms of wheat and other imported inputs. Probably the biggest single factor that will influence our exchange rate in the year ahead is political stability. As an industry we urge the government and the president to act responsibly and consistently during the forthcoming period of transition within the leadership of the governing party. WHEAT INDUSTRY A windfall for the wheat industry, together with the baking industry, to an extent, has been the recent drought. Mr Value of wheat import tariff questioned HE WHEAT IMPORT tariff was Tintroduced to protect the wheat farmer in South Africa and to encourage the growing of wheat in the county. When one considers that there has been no real growth in wheat production over the last 10 years, we should question the value of the tariff, says Mr Colin Hardy, addressing the annual general meeting of the Chamber of Baking. It is not acknowledged that the tariff, which plays a big part in determining the local wheat price, is not paid to the farmer. The entire tariff finds its way into Hardy explained that maize prices went through the roof in 2016 and maize meal became very expensive. Some consumers switched to bread, others tragically just ate less. Gradually, the wheat value chain has begun working with greater unity. Issues such as the establishment of the South African Cultivar Technology Agency and the removal of the wheat cultivar list from the Agricultural Product Standards Act threatened to divide the industry. Efforts are being made to revive the wheat industry which is in reality an industry in distress and will require even greater unity going forward. He described the wheat industry s revival strategy objective to produce 85% of South Africa s wheat needs, as a great opportunity. Over the past five years only 56% of our wheat needs were produced at home. If this percentage were to be achieved, local wheat farmers would be harvesting almost 1 million tonnes more per season. But we need to remember that farmers are business people, they will follow the money like any other business person, so wheat production must be profitable. the coffers of the national treasury. But ultimately this cost to the milling and baking industries is paid by the consumer. Delivering his address before the reshuffle of President Zuma s cabinet, Mr Hardy explained that, with the strengthening of the rand, the wheat import tariff was expected to be reduced from R1 595 per ton to around R1 190 per ton. Also, the International Trade Administration Commission of South Africa (ITAC) has been reviewing the tariff formula. This has delayed the announcement of the new reduced tariff. He cautioned that the good news could be overshadowed should the Western Cape wheat crop fail, either through insufficient rain or farmers not planting. Forecasters are again talking of a dry second quarter of the year and El Niño is still around. However, there is some good news in that deliveries in respect of the 2016/17 wheat harvest are now at 1,9 million tonnes. With all this taking place, it takes a lot of courage to be a wheat farmer, Mr Hardy said.

11 Forced inspections entail enormous costs The SA Chamber of Baking recently contributed to the Wheat Indaba held in Pretoria and Stellenbosch where ten different themed sectorial issues were presented. REPORTING AT THE Chamber s annual general meeting, Mr Colin Hardy, President of the Chamber, said the Chamber s presentation focused on regulatory and other challenges facing the baking industry in SA today. All sectors were represented at the indabas, and certain wheat industry bottlenecks were addressed. Mr Hardy named the following as challenges and matters that the industry needs to attend to: LEAF Inspection Services which has been established as a contractor to carry out inspections at excessive cost to the industry. The industry is on the verge of joining other sectors who are taking this battle to the courts. Duty free imports of wheat from the EU under EPA and its quota allocation process. The import tariff policy. The inactivity of the Wheat Value Chain Round Table (A body established by the department of agriculture, forestry and fisheries). Unfair Southern African Customs Union rebates. Matters relating to the Presidential Working Group on Agriculture; and Matters relating to the Winter Cereal Trust. A point duly noted at the indabas was the length of time it takes for legislation to be processed, promulgated and implemented with associated costs to the industry. Following on from the wheat indabas, a meeting involving various industry role players, including the SA Chamber of Baking, was held with the minister of agriculture. All the above issues were presented to the minister, with the LEAF Inspection Services matter taking centre stage. Mr Hardy explained that the industry is not willing to be forced to use an inspection service when over the years since deregulation it has established its own systems and mechanisms to ensure standards are being met. The deputy director general of agriculture called a meeting following the meeting with the minister. Little progress was made and it now appears that a very serious confrontation is on the horizon between the department and the food industry on the specific matter of assigned inspection services. According to Mr Hardy the costs to the bread industry and consumer could be enormous. LEAF has indicated that they plan to test 2% of products. Without getting too technical, the inspection charges to the industry would amount to about R1,5 million per year based on their tariff of 3,3 cents per loaf inspected. But the cost of not being able to sell inspected product is huge. Using SAGIS figures, which are considered to be very conservative, the unsaleable product would be in the region of 43 million loaves a year or lost revenue of around R500 million per year. This is worth fighting for. THE MILLING AND BAKING INDUSTRIES ARE VERY CONCERNED ABOUT CERTAIN DEVEL- OPMENTS IN THE AGRICULTURAL SECTOR. THE NEW APPROACH BY AGRICULTURE TO EMPHASISE YIELD AT THE EXPENSE OF QUAL- ITY IS GOING TO PRESENT IMMENSE CHAL- LENGES TO THE INDUSTRY GOING FORWARD. Colin Hardy, President SACB, AGM 2017 Funding of wheat breeding research is controversial HE ESTABLISHMENT OF the South African Cul- and Technology Agency (SACTA), or the end Ttivar point royalty system, to fund wheat breeding research has resulted in significantly increased statutory levies being paid by the industry. This has been a controversial move, which was not supported by the milling and baking industries, says Mr Colin Ha rdy, President of the Chamber of Baking. According to Mr Hardy, there is now uncertainty as to the cut off between research being funded by the Winter Cereal Trust and that to be undertaken by SACTA. They are also unclear on the future role of the Research Technical Committee of the Winter Cereal Trust. We have gathered that there is still some political unhappiness and distrust for the motives behind the establishment of this new body, but we have accepted the minister s decision and must move on. Cultivar list The removal of the wheat cultivar list is another distressing subject for the baking industry. According to Mr Hardy it is the only scientifically approved list of wheat cultivars to be produced in South Africa. For millers and bakers it is the one document that gives some assurance as to the quality of wheat grown in the country. Previously the cultivar list was housed under the Agricultural Product Standards Act (APS). For reasons best known to the department of agriculture, fisheries and forestry (DAFF), it was decided to remove this list from the APS Act. It was important to millers and bakers that this list enjoys some form of legislative protection and the industry agreed that it would be moved to the Plant Improvement Act. Unfortunately, due to lack of co-ordination and communication between registrars in the DAFF, this did not happen. It is a matter that the National Chamber of Milling and SACB will continue to work on and seek a satisfactory outcome for all stakeholders.

Bakers comply to regulations THE PRESIDENT OF THE Chamber of Baking congratulated members for their efforts in sodium reduction regulations. The industry is compliant to sodium reduction and some bakeries h ave even achieved the 2019 requirements, Mr Colin Hardy reported at the annual general meeting. The baking industry is nearing the end of the road as all tests and evaluations of the proposed new fortificant mix for wheat flour have had positive outcomes. The delay in the regulation process is discolouration of maize meal containing the new mix, when cooked. The industry and department of health (DoH) is curently being assisted by the University of Ghent to solve the problem. Throughout the trials and sensory evaluations, industry (millers, bakers, fortificant suppliers, SAGL and others) and the DoH have cooperated closely. The way this process has been managed by the DoH team can be held up as a fine example of how government and industry should work together, Mr Hardy said. ACCORDING TO STATS SA, PRICES OF 700 G LOAVES OF BREAD HAVE INCREASED YEAR-ON-YEAR TO JANU- ARY 2017 BY 11,47% FOR WHITE, AND 13,1% FOR BROWN, CONTRIBUTING TO HIGHER FOOD INFLATION. FOR A LARGE PORTION OF 2016, PRICE INCREASES FOR BREAD WERE UNDER THE AVERAGE OF FOOD IN GENERAL. BUT TOWARDS THE END OF 2016 THIS SITUATION CHANGED. THE HOPE IS THAT THE RAND WILL PERFORM STRONGER AND THAT THE PRICE INCREASE OF WHEAT AND OTHER INGREDIENTS WILL MODERATE, WHICH WOULD MEAN THAT THE CONSUMPTION OF BREAD WILL INCREASE. 14 Does herbicide-induced phytotoxicity occur in South African wheat cultivars? The ARC-Small Grain aims to determine the phytotoxicity of herbicides to several Western Cape wheat cultivars. No herbicide tolerance studies have been performed on local dryland wheat cultivars, leaving producers uninformed about the herbicide tolerance status of these cultivars. Some of the products that caused yield reductions in Australia are also registered for use in South Africa. Hestia Nienaber and Ian Heyns ARC-SMALL GRAIN, BETHLEHEM ACCORDING TO RESULTS from an Australian study, some of their wheat varieties were more prone to damage from certain herbicides than others. They tested nineteen wheat varieties in their study. Fourteen herbicide treatments were applied before seeding/ incorporated by seeding. One was applied immediately after planting and the rest of the treatments were all applied at different post emergence wheat growth stages (Zadoks et al., 1974). Yield reductions as high as 41% were recorded in some varieties with certain treatments. Variation in tolerance can be due to differences in morphological characteristics or physiological processes and/or the tempo of internal ear development among varieties. Moreover, the applied herbicide rate, environmental conditions during herbicide application and the growth stage of the crop may also impact the levels of tolerance amongvarieties. In a study by Protic et al. (2006), a high correlation was noted between the time of application and herbicide dosage on damage in winter wheat. In their study, the largest reduction in grain yield was caused by primsulphuron-methyl, applied before emergence at 30,0 g/ha. Orr et al. (1996) found that two of the most critical factors in reducing plant injury are choice of post- (crop) emergence herbicide and the growth stage at which the herbicide is applied. To minimise risk of wheat injury and to maximise yields, they found that the optimal time to apply post-(crop) emergence herbicides is at the tillering growth stage. The two-leaf stage was found to be the most sensitive to 2.4- D. Moderate or severe injury caused by 2.4-D and dicamba + MCPA on onethird to one-half of the spikes can cause yield losses of up to 27%. Conversely, Marczewska (2006) found that an application of 67,5 g/ha of chlorsulfuron (Glean 75 WG) was not harmful to the growth or yield of winter wheat. Kieloch & Rola (2010) also found no reduction in grain yield of five winter wheat cultivars screened with different herbicide treatments in normal seasons. In South Africa, there are currently 15 different dryland wheat cultivars (for planting in the Western Cape) in the ARC-Small Grain National Cultivar Evaluation trials. To date, no herbicide tolerance studies have been performed on these cultivars, leaving producers uninformed about the herbicide tolerance status of these cultivars. It is alarming that some of the products that caused yield reductions in Australia are also registered for use in South Africa. Although tradenames may differ, the active ingredient(s) stay the same. Some of these active ingredients include chlorsulfuron, diclofop-methyl, tralkoxydim, bromoxynil, metsulfuron, MCPA and iodosulfuron. Using some of these herbicides unknowingly on herbicide intolerant cultivars, can lead to very high levels of yield reduction. Due to environmental variability, it becomes essential to test herbicide and cultivar interactions over several seasons and at more than one location. Research The research project, conducted by ARC- Small Grain, aims to determine the phytotoxicity of herbicides to several Western Cape cultivars. This project includes six cultivars (SST 015, SST 056, SST 0127, SST 087, PAN 3408 and Ratel) planted in two regions, i.e, Rûens [Tygerhoek (2015 and 2016)] and Swartland [Moorreesburg (2015) and Wellington (2016)]. Six different herbicide treatments (including the control) are included in the trials. Only the highest recommended rates are tested for all herbicides. In 2015, a section of the Tygerhoek trial was flooded and had to be excluded from the trial. For this reason, only 2016 data for SST 087 were recorded. It would be unfair to compare the differences between the cultivars, as some cultivars are naturally better yielders than others. If a cultivar is a low yielder under normal circumstances, it would be unfair to both the cultivar and the chemical(s) to state that the cultivar underperformed due to the herbicide(s). Results of the experiments are summarised in Figures 1 to 6. The active ingredients of the herbicides are as follows: Pyroxsulam Iodosulfuron-methyl-sodium + mesosulfuron-methyl + safener Chlorsulfuron & metsulfuron-methyl MCPA (potassium salt, phenoxy compound) & bromoxynil (nitrile) Pyrasulfotole (pyrazole) & bromoxynil (nitrile) & mefenpyr-diethyl. PAN 3408 In 2015 in the Swartland, only one herbicide treatment showed antagonism in comparison to the control. This treatment was MCPA & bromoxynil. All other herbicide treatments recorded higher yields than the control. In 2016, only two treatments recorded higher yields than the control. These treatments were Iodosulfuron-methyl-sodium & mesosulfuron-methyl & safener and MCPA & bromoxynil. According to the results (Figure 1), Pan 3408 was more sensitive to pyroxsulam than other herbicides in the Swartland. In 2015 in the Rûens, only one herbicide treatment resulted in lower yields 14 KORINGFOKUS WHEAT FOCUS MEI JUNIE 2017

15 During the 2015 season in the Rûens, the Iodosulfuron-methyl-sodium & mesosulfuron-methyl & safener treatment had a lower yield than all other herbicide treatments. During the 2016 season, all herbicide treatments resulted in higher yields. The highest yielding treatment (Figure 2) was the chlorsulfuron & metsulfuron-methyl treatment, which was the second highest yielding treatment in the 2015 season. Figure 1: Impact of different herbicide treatments on yield of PAN 3408 at two localities over two years. In 2016, two treatments recorded lower yields than the control. These treatments were pyroxsulam and pyrasulfotole & bromoxynil & mefenpyr-diethyl. Higher yields were recorded with the chlorsulfuron & metsulfuron-methyl, Iodosulfuron-methyl-sodium & mesosulfuron-methyl & safener and MCPA & bromoxynil treatments. According to Figure 1, it is evident that PAN 3408 was most sensitive to pyrasulfotole & bromoxynil & mefenpyr-diethyl in SST 056 In 2015 in the Swartland, all herbicide treatments showed lower yields than the control, thus indicating different levels of antagonism. In 2016, three treatments showed lower yields than the control. These three treatments were Iodosulfuron-methyl-sodium & mesosulfuron-methyl & safener, pyroxsulam and pyrasulfotole & bromoxynil & mefenpyrdiethyl. The best performing treatment in 2016 was the MCPA & bromoxynil treatment, although it was the second poorest performing treatment in SST 0127 In 2015 in the Swartland, only two treatments showed an increase in yield when compared to the control. These two treatments were chlorsulfuron & metsulfuron-methyl and pyrasulfotole & bromoxynil & mefenpyr-diethyl. The rest of the herbicide treatments al recorded lower yields than the control. In 2016, all herbicide treatments showed an increase in yield above that of the control. The best performing herbicide treatment was pyroxsulam. As in 2015, the results indicate (Figure 3) that SST 0127 was more sensitive to Iodosulfuronmethyl-sodium & mesosulfuron-methyl & safener than any other herbicides. In 2015 in the Rûens, the MCPA & bromoxynil treatment had a lower yield than other treatments. The highest yielding treatments were the control and Iodosulfuron-methyl-sodium & mesosulfuronmethyl & safener treatments. In 2016, the chlorsulfuron & metsulfuron-methyl treatment recorded a notably higher yield than the control. According to Figure 3, it is clear that during 2016, SST 0127 in the Southern Cape was more sensitive to the pyrasulfotole & bromoxynil & mefenpyrdiethyl treatment than any other herbicide treatments. SST 015 In 2015 in the Swartland, only two treatments showed lower yields than the control. These treatments were Iodosulfuron-methyl-sodium & mesosulfuron-methyl & safener and MCPA & bromoxynil. The highest yielding treatments were pyroxsulam and chlorsulfuron & metsulfuron-methyl. In 2016, three treatments recorded lower yields than the control, thus indicating various degrees of antagonism. These three treatments were Iodosulfuronmethyl-sodium & mesosulfuron-methyl & safener, MCPA & bromoxynil and pyroxsulam. According to the results in Figure 4, SST 015 was more sensitive to pyroxsulam than any other herbicide. In 2015 in the Rûens, the best performing treatment was pyroxsulam and the lowest yielding treatment was Iodosulfuron-methyl-sodium & mesosulfuron-methyl & safener. In the 2016 season, the best yielding treatment was chlorsulfuron & metsulfuron-methyl and the lowest yielding treatment was MCPA & bromoxynil. According to Figure 4, it is Figure 4: Impact of different herbicide treatments on yield of SST 015 at two localities over two years. Ratel In 2015 in the Swartland, varied yields were recorded over the different herbicide treatments. Only one treatment recorded a lower yield than the control and that was the chlorsulfuron & metsulfuron-methyl treatment. In 2016, only pyroxsulam recorded a lower yield than the control. All other herbicide treatments increased the yield above that of the control. The best herbicide treatment was MCPA & bromoxynil (Figure 5). In 2015 in the Rûens, all treatments recorded lower yields than the control. In 2016, again most treatments showed lower yields than the control. Only one herbicide treatment recorded a higher yield than the control and that treatment was MCPA & bromoxynil. SST 087 In 2015 in the Swartland, the MCPA & bromoxynil treatment had a lower yield than all other herbicide treatments. The best treatment was pyrasulfotole & bromoxynil & mefenpyr-diethyl. In 2016, two treatments recorded lower yields than the control. These treatments were Iodosulfuronmethyl-sodium & mesosulfuron-methyl & safener and pyroxsulam. Chlorsulfuron & metsulfuron-methyl, MCPA & bromoxynil and pyrasulfotole & bromoxynil & mefenpyr-diethyl recorded higher yields than the control (Figure 6). The highest yielding herbicide treatment in the Rûens in 2016 was the Iodosulfuron-methyl-sodium & mesosulfuron-methyl & safener treatment and the lowest yielding treatment was pyrasulfotole & bromoxynil & mefenpyrdiethyl. Chlorsulfuron & metsulfuronmethyl and pyroxsulam also showed lower yields than the control. Summary No herbicide treatment did well in both areas for the same cultivar. Clear differences can be seen between the different cultivars. Overall, the two herbicides that led to the lowest yields over both areas in 2015 and 2016 were pyroxsulam and 16 KORINGFOKUS WHEAT FOCUS MEI JUNIE 2017

It is very interesting to note that Iodosulfuron-methyl-sodium & mesosulfuron-methyl & safener also showed the highest yields overall in two cultivars in the Swartland and two in the Rûens. This confirms the suspicion that herbicides act differently in different areas and on different cultivars. The outcomes of this project will inform wheat producers about the possible phytotoxic effect that some herbicides may have on certain wheat cultivars. Producers must be able to balance the risk of crop damage from a herbicide against the potential yield loss from both the weed competition and the number of weed seeds returning to the soil bank. Any choice of herbicide is, however, dependent on the kind of post-emergence weed(s) to be controlled, since not all herbicides are registered for use on the same weeds. Ek sal AgriSafe by enige produsent in Suid-Afrika aanbeveel, sê Ferreira. 20 JSE introduce wheat expiries following wheat indaba sessions The Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) made decisions regarding the JSE deliverable wheat contract (contract code WEAT) for the marketing season 1 October 2017 through till 30 September ACCORDING TO A statement by Chris Sturgess, Director: Commodities and Key Client Management at the JSE, they have carefully considered all the arguments going back to the consultation process that started in January this year. We ve made a final decision which in our view will serve the best interests of the derivative contract we have listed. Participants are reminded the steps are only applicable to the JSE listed contract and will only be applied to physical deliveries in completion of a JSE contract. The JSE will introduce the Guaranteed Grade (GG) wheat facility where storage operators, at their discretion, will issue JSE silo receipts for specific grade wheat. The storage operators will honour this receipts for a period of three months for trading purposes and then a further month to outload. This enhancement to the JSE deliverable contract does not in any way deviate from the government published wheat grades of B1, B2 or B3, but rather provides participants the assurance that, when out loading the wheat, storage operators will not move one grade up or down, but rather supply the wheat grade as reflected on the JSE silo receipt. This enhancement will become applic able as from 1 May 2017 via the ESC system. The JSE will then reassess before the start of the 2018/ 19 marketing season before committing to continue with this functionality. They have also decided to remove the R100 origin discount applicable to certain origins when delivery is made in completion of a futures contract. The JSE considered that South Africa was already consuming large tonnages from different countries around the world and there was no need to differentiate on origin. We again reiterate the JSE WEAT contract is a futures contract that will re- flect pricing from any of the deliverable wheat origins approved for delivery and so clients should not view this as only reflective of South African origin wheat. According to the statement, the JSE has decided to continue to trade B1 wheat as the reference grade and will continue to accept B2 and B3 wheat for delivery, however they will change the methodology applied to determine the grade discounts for contracts deliverable on the JSE. The JSE aims to publish the final grade discounts only closer to the new marketing season. They have been doing research on how other wheat derivative exchanges manage delivery of different proteins. The JSE has established that Hard Red Winter (HRW) Wheat traded on Kansas under CME Group, have a 10 cent/bushel discount per 0,5% change in protein. Since this underlying HRW wheat also forms the basis for the current wheat import tariff calculations, and is also an indicator for global wheat prices, they believe in adopting the same discount except applying this to a 1% protein move. In other words, instead of 10 US cents rather use 20 US cents/ bushel discount for every 1% change in protein, which is reflective of an international benchmark. Considering that they want to use the HRW wheat discount as applied by CME Group as the initial base for grade discounts going forward, the JSE will convert the 20 US cents/bushel to tonnes using the conversion factor of , therefore resulting in a grade discount of US$ per tonne. The JSE will then consider the average exchange rate for the past 7 weeks leading up to 15 September each year in order to determine the average dollar/rand exchange rate. The JSE therefore proposes for the marketing season 1 October September 2018 to apply a grade Chris Sturgess, Director: Commodities and Key Client Management at the JSE. discount per 1% protein change of $ per tonne multiplied by the local exchange rate as determine and finalised by the latest 15 September The final discount will be rounded to the closest R1/ton value. According to Mr Sturgess, it is difficult to predict where exchange rates would be in August and September 2017, but assuming a rate of R13.40 for this example, the grade discount for 2017/ 18 would be as follows: B X = R99 and for B3 = 99X2= R198. We appreciate and respect that a number of clients would have preferred a different outcome. The JSE has considered all the facts as represented and decided the above will be in the best interest of the currently listed derivatives contract. It is unfortunate that the industry could not reach consensus on the items raised. That said, we do trust the WEAT contract remains an effective contract for price risk management and that price convergence with the spot market is achieved through the necessary physical deliveries. Mr Sturgess welcomes further suggestions or comments regarding the above changes and invites clients to write to the JSE on: commodities@jse. co.za. 20 KORINGFOKUS WHEAT FOCUS MEI JUNIE 2017

Daar is 23 verversingspunte. Franklin Electric SA is bringing dependable, standard borehole equipment to the solar market for the first time in South Africa, giving our customers access to solar pumping systems with the same consistency as conventional borehole equipment, says Van der Merwe. Besides negating the need for fuelburning generators, the Fhoton So- VISIT FRANKLIN ELECTRIC AT STAND 25 All-in-one solar system pumping solution launched Solar powered pumps available for purchase at Nampo at a once-off promotional offer Prizes for visitors, with a grand prize of a complete solar powered pumping system, including a 250 Wp solar panel larpak is also more economical in the long run with many of the smaller sized systems costing little more than their fuel-powered equivalents. In addition, the solar system minimises future costs and cost uncertainties as the fuel is free and the pump element, which can be removed and replaced alone, is the only wearing part, with little or no maintenance required. With a solar pumping system there is a significant reduction of cost of ownership and customers are assured of many years of reliable water supply at near-zero operating cost, says Van der Merwe. He adds that the investment payback period for Franklin Electric s Fhoton SolarPAK is 12 to 24 months, allowing customers to quickly realise the benefits of a solar-powered water pumping system.

Koring se wortelstelsel is baie belangrik, veral omdat dit so vatbaar is vir droogte. Meer are per plant. Eerste en tweede basale internodes is korter (doeltreffende plantstruktuur). Plante ontwikkel meer eenvormig tot volwassenheid. Hoër stikstof-inhoud gedurende blomstadium. Aansienlike hoër weerstand teen watertekort. Doeltreffender en beter ontwikkelde wortelstelsel. Wessel Cloete Sel: E-pos: wessel@goldsuite.com.au

THIS WAS THE JOURNEY of Boytjie, Boertjie and Die Lady, three trucks donated by Volvo Trucks with the purpose of assisting farmers that have been struck by the drought throughout South Africa. The facilitation of the deliveries to over farmers in various sectors that have been affected by the drought was done through Boere In Nood, a non-profit organisation that was established in We realised that while the drought is taking its toll on a lot of communities, the people that feel the impact of the drought first hand is very often one of our customers, the farmers. To this end we investigated various manners in which Volvo Trucks Southern Africa would not only be able to assist the drought stricken farmers, but also see first-hand the impact of the assistance given to the farmers, says Valentia Hobbs, General Manager, Marketing and Communication of Volvo Trucks. The company not only offered the three trucks but also provided drivers and diesel to the vehicles that would travel a total of km around South Africa. The truck drivers were of- Boytjie, one of three Volvo trucks delivering bales of hay to farmers suffering from drought conditions. ten the unspoken heroes of the day as they faced some harsh words in lieu of the good work that they were doing. We are proud of our association and the impact that we have been able to make through this collaboration with Boere in Nood. The work may be far from over, however, it is a privilege to have been able to make a real difference to the people affected, as well as the animals whose lives were saved from the deliveries of the feed concludes Valentia.

SEVERAL AGENCIES AND organisations have generously shared data for inclusion in the national freight databank in order to compare and determine trends and bottlenecks within the freight transport system. The statistical information contained under this platform includes historic data on freight volumes for the three commodity sectors (agriculture, manufacturing and mining), five modes of transport (road, rail, pipeline, air and maritime) and sixteen national freight corridors. The National Freight Monitoring Framework (NFMF) was developed in 2005 to enable access to reliable information on goods and services in the country. Stemming from the NFMF, DoT developed a freight databank for South Africa. The databank evolved from the initial databank in 2002 to freight databanks per province up to The infrastructure planning and investments will result in the enhancement of operational efficiencies across all transport modes, reducing the cost of doing business and thus increased competitiveness of South Africa in world markets.
