4 RESEARCH EXPERIENCE Predoctoral Fellow, AFRI-NIFA December 2014 Present Experience in successfully writing and securing grant funding to support doctoral dissertation research. The overall objective of my research is to investigate food access and underserved areas in the U.S. Specifically, my dissertation research covers the following: First, I begin by documenting how price-cost margins and product assortment vary across different food retailing landscapes and place these findings in context with existing food-desert literature. Second, I develop an equilibrium model of store choice that relates both the demand and supply side to store characteristics, including price-cost margins and product assortment. Third, I investigate the resulting welfare changes to consumers and food retailers by simulating changes in the retail food landscape based on hypothetical policy-informed scenarios. These objectives are accomplished by using state of the art techniques to model the behavior of food retailers and consumers using micro-level scanner data, such as IRI's InfoScan and Consumer Network Panel, to create a more complete picture of the U.S. food retailing landscape. Results from this research are intended to inform policy initiatives aimed at addressing poor food access issues. Research Assistant, Consumption Team, AFRI Global Food Security Project July 2011 December 2014 Research assistant on a five-year, multi-disciplinary research project funded by USDA's Agriculture and Food Research Initiative. Documented current and potential community-level constraints and identified opportunities for improving access to regionally-produced healthy food for people in lowincome communities in the Northeast. Held lead responsibilities for the following research duties: (1) data familiarization and resolution using ACNielsen Homescan Database, (2) extensive data mining and analysis of consumer purchasing behavior, (3) development and construction of demand models for certain healthy and non-healthy market basket items using scanner data, and (4) research analysis using store intercept surveys. Through the project, I worked alongside members of the team and outside experts to communicate our findings to community leaders to identify ways to overcome poor food access and related challenges.
