Results and experience from two LIFE Projects AgriClimateChange and AgriAdapt LIFE Info Day Budapest Carolina Wackerhagen

Lake Constance Foundation Project oriented nature conservation organisation working towards a sustainbale economy in the Lake Constance area and beyond Current projects in: Business & Biodiversity Agriculture and Climate Renewable Energy Nature conservation and water protection LIFE Info Day Budapest 2

LIFE AgriAdapt ( ) LIFE Biodiv Standards ( ) AgriClimateChange ( ) "Best of the Best LIFE projects 2014" LIFE Projects European Business & Biodiversity Campaign ( ) CHAMP ( ) Living Lakes: Sustainable Management of Wetlands and Shallow Lakes ( ) ECOLUP ( ) One of the five best LIFE projects LIFE Info Day Budapest 3

AgriClimateChange & AgriAdapt Agriculture plays a major role in climate change through the emissions of GHG. 15% of global GHG Emissions are produced by agriculture. Especially through: Ruminant digestion: Methane (CH4) Soil processes: Nitrous oxide (N2O) Directly and indirectly through the use of diesel, fertilisers, pesticides (CO2) Climate change is recognised as one of the most serious environmental, societal and economic challenges the world is facing. LIFE Info Day Budapest 4

AgriClimateChange & AgriAdapt Main sources of GHG emissions in agriculture LIFE Info Day Budapest 5

AgriClimateChange & AgriAdapt Agriculture has the highest exposition to climate change as it depends directly on climatic factors. Because of a changing climate the agricultural sector will have to deal with following events: Increase in extreme weather events Longer heat waves/drought periods Increase in heavy precipitation Change in the precipitation pattern Increase in average temperatures Increase in pests LIFE Info Day Budapest 6

LIFE AgriClimateChange ( ) Farm-level assessment of GHG emissions and energy consumption AgriClimateChange Farm specific action plans Implementation of measures to reduce GHG emission and energy consumption LIFE Info Day Budapest 7

AgriClimateChange Farm-level assessment of GHG emissions and energy consumption with ACCT Tool 120 farms; 24 farms in Germany Energy balance GHG balance LIFE Info Day Budapest 8

Farm specific action plan AgriClimateChange LIFE Info Day Budapest 9

AgriClimateChange Over 100 farms have been analysed and advised since 2010 LIFE AgriClimateChange AgroCo2ncept Project with Omira Education in agricultural schools Training modules on the topic of climate protection and adaptation with various agricultural colleges LIFE Info Day Budapest 10

AgriAdapt Sustainable adaptation of EU farming systems to climate change ( ) Agriculture will have to face the challenge of a changing climate as it has the highest exposition to climate. European farmers therefore will have to adapt to a changing climate we want European farmers to adapt sustainably LIFE Info Day Budapest 11

AgriAdapt Estonia, Estonian University of Life Science (EMU) France, Solagro Spain, Fundación Global Nature (FGN) Germany, Lake Constance Foundation (LCF) LIFE Info Day Budapest 12

AgriAdapt- Project objectives Demonstrate that 3 of the most important farming systems in the EU (arable, livestock & permanent crops) will become more climate resilient through the implementation of sustainable adaptation measures LIFE Info Day Budapest 13

AgriAdapt- Project actions Finishing the preliminary phase (September 2016 May 2017) Selection of 120 pilot farms (30/partner and climate zone) Development of a common decision supporting tool to analyse the climate vulnerability at farm level LIFE Info Day Budapest 14

Climate RP ( ) ACI frequencies (RP) Climate near future (NF) ACI frequencies (NF) Impact on crop yields Impact on crop quality Without adaptation measures Impact on crop yields Impact on crop quality With adaptation measures Efficiency, Substitution, Redesign LIFE Info Day Budapest 15

AgriAdapt- Project actions Development and testing phase on 120 pilot farms (June 2017 July 2019) Compilation of adaptation action plans for 120 farms Creation of farm level tailored measures + annual monitoring Dissemination and communication phase (July 2017 December 2019) Capacity building for current and future farmers Demonstration of feasibility and transferability of the tool and measures to : political agricultural food industry stakeholders LIFE Info Day Budapest 16
