Collection of discard in European fishing ports challenges and oppotunities Christian Bisgaard 1

Reducing discards and bycatches the problem Bycatches and discards are a serious problem in European fisheries Bycatches and their associated discards have serious consequences such as: a waste of resources; lower future catch opportunities with catching of juvenile species; immediate reduction in the spawning biomass if mature individuals are caught; negative impact on the marine ecosystem and on biodiversity In most cases, the fish or crustaceans caught and discarded into the sea will already be dead or have very little chance of survival 2

Reducing discards and bycatches 3

Reducing discards and bycatches discard ban Throwing away fish can not longer be tolerated Reformed Common Fisheries Policy requires fisheries operating in the EU to bring all by-catch back to shore By-catch is counted toward the fishery's quota 4

Reducing discards and bycatches still a long way to go A combination of instruments and measures to be adapted to each individual fishery is needed to reduce bycatches and gradually eliminate discards The practical and economic realities of the fisheries also need to be taken into account Improving selectivity of fishing gear is necessary And an important question that is still to be answered: What happens with the bycatch? until now, there is no systematic solution SARIA/Bioceval has many years of experience in the valorisation of fish by-products 5

Fish oils and fish proteins for the petfood industry > Input > Production > Output Fish by-products Total input: 245,000 t/a Grinding Heating (50 minutes, 120 ºC) Drying Removal of fat Pressing and milling Wide range of high-quality fish proteins and fish oils for the petfood industry, the feed industry and for aquaculture Fish oils are also used in the leather industry (tanneries, leather care) Fish oils: 32,000 t/a Fish proteins: 45,000 t/a 6

Where does the raw material come from? Fish and fish scraps are collected at fish processing plants International collection: Germany, Holland, Spain, France, Poland, Scandinavian and Italy Maintenance of cold chain for ensuring food-grade quality for special requirements for production at LIPROMAR Transportation and processing within a tight time frame 7

How to obtain quality oil and unmixed meal SARIA/Bioceval produces fish oils and fish meals in both, high-capacity production lines and small specialty production lines On delivery, the fish by-products are immediately separated by type and stored temporarily in special storage bunkers During the subsequent production process, the raw material is heated, sterilised, deoiled, concentrated and then dried The result at the end of the production process is high-quality oil or unmixed meal 8

Fish meal as a protein component in animal feed Bioceval fish meals are popular as a source of protein in the pet food industry, in aquaculture, in poultry and in pig feed Bioceval produces: Fish meal standard Salmon fish meal Herring fish meal Trout fish meal Tuna fish meal White fish meal Shrimp meal Other fish meals on request 9

Fish oil adding energy to feed Bioceval produces: Fish oil with dioxin content guarantee Salmon fish oil with dioxin content guarantee Oil from shrimp shells Herring fish oil with dioxin content guarantee Mackerel fish oil Our fish oils are used in a variety of ways: Pet food industry Aquaculture Feed for pigs (especially for feeding sows and rearing piglets) Leather industry (tanneries, leather care) Further processing in refineries 10

Bioceval specialty products MSC and ASC certified products For Bioceval, fresh and high-quality raw material is particularly important. Partly, it s origin are MSC certified fishery and ASC certified aquaculture MSC fish by-products are collected, processed and marketed separately, working closely with MSC certified plants within the fish processing industry Organic fish meals and oils Organic products are subject to strict regulations and conditions. Bioceval meets these high standards and is therefore a supplier to organic businesses Poultry and pig fattening farms and partners in aquaculture benefit from high-quality, purely organic feed. Compliance can be guaranteed and provenance traced back at any time 11

Food-grade fish oils and fish proteins > Input > Production > Output Food-grade fish by-products Ensuring an unbroken cold chain Total input: 5,000 t/a Grinding Heating Drying Removal of fat Pressing and milling Same procedure implementing all food hygiene regulations Wide range of high-quality fish proteins and fish oils for the food industry Food-grade fish oils and fish proteins are also used for premium petfood Fish oils: 800 t/a Fish proteins: 1,000 t/a Functional fish proteins: 150 t/a 12

Sustainability Our primary objective is to provide effective support to our partners in the fish processing industry, while taking environmental factors into consideration Because we exclusively process fish scraps, this helps to conserve valuable fish resources Our activities extract maximum benefit from catches made by the fish industry. All processes and product developments reflect this philosophy That is also why we participate in selected EU environmental projects and maintain an open, trusted and ongoing dialogue with leading environmental and animal welfare organisations like Greenpeace and the WWF 17

Bioceval as part of the SARIA Group SARIA Group is a leading international producer of quality products for human consumption, animal nutrition, aquaculture, pharmaceutical and industrial applications and for the agricultural sector. SARIA Group also generates renewable energy and provides services for the agricultural sector and the food industry with animal by-products and organic residues as main raw material. 18

What can Bioceval do for the fish industry? SARIA/Bioceval collects fish scraps at industrial scale SARIA/Bioceval organises a clean and prompt collection within the law SARIA/Bioceval has outstanding expertise in producing high-quality fish meal and oil which is demanded on the market In collaboration with the fish industry, SARIA/Bioceval is able to develop a collecting system for bycatches at European harbours 28

What can SARIA/Bioceval do for the fish industry? Next steps 1. Identify test harbours to implement the collection system: Each fishery in this harbours gets an own container where bychatches can be stored (in cold store) 2. Billing would be based on quality and quantity of raw material and frequency of collection 3. Adjust / improve the collecting and billing process 4. Expand the system on other harbours Clear advantages: Legally compliant disposal Processing of fish to high-quality products Sustainability: No more waste of resources! 29
