3 >> HINNER KÖSTER MESSAGE from the PRESIDENT of the SA HEREFORD CATTLE SOCIETY To all my fellow Hereford Breeders and business partners of the breed: It is a privilege for me to be elected as new President of the SA Hereford Society and to follow in the footsteps of so many distinguished Presidents of the past. Due to my lifetime love for Hereford cattle and its people, I did not hesitate when I was asked whether I was prepared to take on this important task. Hopefully, I can contribute to promote and grow the popularity of our wonderful breed and at least match or even better the achievements of my predecessors. I urge members to please support the Hereford activities. Unfortunately, the support and interaction of breeders in general has been low. It is important that breeders remain united and stay aligned with breeding goals and technology advances of the SA Hereford. Council and its special advisors are doing an immense job to ensure that the SA Hereford maintains a fine-grained scientific breeding approach and thereby stays at the forefront of applying new technology. A typical example is the Genomic Program that we are participating in, despite the current size of our breed within this country. Finally, I would like to hear from breeders what withholds them from more active participation in the breed and what we can do more to trigger the interest of breeders. Without proper participation of everyone involved, our breed cannot achieve or maintain the potential it has in the SA cattle industry. Let us also focus on the bigger picture and not on insignificant issues that are often of no value to improve or grow the popularity of the breed. Thank you to all the positive contributors, which include all stakeholders (breeders, advisors, supporters, sponsors, etc). Let us remind ourselves for whom, and what purpose we breed for, and therefore continue to focus on exceeding the other breeds with respect to important genetic and phenotypic traits that really matter. Please contact me personally with any issues or concerns you may have or even positive experiences you may be aware of. Together with the newly elected Council, I am looking forward to serve the breed and its people for at least the next 12 months.

5 FEEDBACK Hereford Centenary Symposium IN CLOCOLAN MARCH 2018 After Mr Bertus Mong, President of the SA Hereford Society welcomed all the attendants, Mr Russell Clark presented an overview on a Breeder s Manual & Stud Administration Guidelines for successful stud breeding that the Herford Society is busy developing for current, but especially also for future breeders. The major factors to consider when starting a stud cattle operation, and that were highlighted in detail, were the importance of: 1. Working with nature 2. Management conditions 3. Stud Administration 4. Animal identification This manual and these guidelines will be finalised soon and made available to all interesting parties. Following that, Dr Hinner Köster, in his capacity as a shareholder and Executive Director of the animal feed company, Barnlab, shared his knowledge on the the Principles of intensive feeding programs for stud-, show- and sale cattle. Thank you also for the generous sponsor that Barnlab and Standard Bank have provided in making this symposium successful. Mr Russell Clark, Mr Stefan van Wyk and Mr Wicus Kruger then lead a very informative Classification Indaba where all attendants debated constructively on various important traits of the Hereford breed. This included especially features of importance such as legs and hooves, muscle definition, udder quality, colour patterns and pigmentation, where good arguments were debated and agreement was aimed to be reached on the way forward with the breed. At the end of day one all attendants were treated with a game drive and sundowner, followed by an evening function at Zuikerkop (Dr Carl Scholtz) with guest speaker, Danie Retief from Standard Bank, Bloemfontein. Day two started with a presentation by Mr Leslie Bergh (Bull s Eye Consulting) & Mr Siebert Vermeulen (SA Studbook) on using BenguFarm and/or Logix for Stud Management and Administration purposes. Following that, Mr Russell Clark and Mr Kevin Miles led an extensive Judging Indaba, that included a Judging Practical with cattle from Zuikerkop. Unfortunately, the emergence of the symposium by breeders was unexpectedly low as important information about the breed in South Africa and its way forward was discussed. It is important that the breeders remain united and stay aligned with breeding goals and features of the SA Hereford, and these symposiums are critical to ensure that this happens. Hopefully future symposiums will attract more interest, where breeders also have the opportunity of interacting socially with each other.

PERSOONLIKHEID VAN DIE JAAR - PJ BUDLER I think PJ s contributions towards Herefords in SA has gone far beyond trying to promote his own cattle. His interest and willingness to assist other breeders in SA to improve their genetics and his support in promoting SA Herefords across the world should be admired and deserves recognition by our breeders. I have not come across any other non-council member that has contributed that much to do this, without trying to only promote their own cattle. It was clear from a visit to the USA that he is highly rated and respected across the world and created more awareness about the quality of SA Herefords. By also starting the World Champion Hereford of the Year competition, PJ has created enormous awareness for not only cattle from across the globe, but certainly Herefords from SA as well. If you further read his CV you will also recognize his full-time dedication and his world-wide high-level involvement in the breed. Therefore, he would be a worthy recipient of this award.
