FAO-CHINA SOUTH-SOUTH COOPERATION Building Partnerships, Sharing Resources, Meeting Development Goals Together FAO CHINA SOUTH-SOUTH COOPERATION Building partnerships, sharing resources, meeting development goals together

In September 2015, China strengthened its commitment to South-South Cooperation (SSC), when President Xi Jinping announced the setting up of an SSC assistance fund, with an initial contribution of USD 2 billion, to help developing countries to implement their post-2015 development agendas. Since FAO s SSC programme was established in 1996 aiming to facilitate the exchange of resources, technologies and knowledge between developing countries and countries in transition China has been a front runner in sharing its agricultural expertise worldwide. The Government of China has made a number of generous donations to an FAO-China SSC Trust Fund. These contributions now total USD 80 million and are invested to help countries build sustainable food systems and enhance their capacities to improve their own livelihoods. IMPACTS Food security improved through introduction of high-yielding crop varieties plus advanced planting and breeding technologies Agricultural development strategies and policies formulated to boost quality of produce Mutual understanding improved and trust built between host countries and China Economic cooperation strengthened Livelihoods and nutritional intakes of vulnerable groups and family farming communities enriched Eskinder Debebe

Food for all is a fundamental human right, upon which all other human rights depend. China has a bitter memory of hunger and wants to see a world free from hunger and poverty. We are willing to share our technologies and expertise, without reservation. Li Keqiang, Chinese Premier. FAO/Giulio Napolitano TECHNICAL AREAS OF COLLABORATION Agribusiness Agroforestry Agro marketing Agro mechanization Agronomy Aquaculture Crop production Fisheries Food processing Horticulture Irrigation Livestock breeding Pest control Poultry farming

EXAMPLE ACHIEVEMENTS In Mongolia Chinese experts are providing technical assistance to improve agricultural production in support of national and household food security. This has helped to implement Mongolia s National Programme on Food Security. In Uganda SSC assistance in production, aquaculture, horticulture, livestock and agribusiness has resulted in the transfer of some 25 new technologies, which have improved the quality of crops and increased local incomes. In Sierra Leone the transfer of techniques, the installation of irrigation systems, and the introduction of modern equipment has improved harvests. Rice, field crops, vegetable and agroforestry productivity has improved significantly and continues to do so. The FAO-China SSC programme has also funded some 15 high-level global workshops and training courses in China, Nigeria and Kyrgyzstan all intended to boost the diverse capacity demands of developing countries. Working towards FAO s Strategic Framework: Help eliminate hunger Make agriculture sustainable Reduce rural poverty Enable inclusive food systems Increase resilience to disasters

BUILDING ON SUCCESS China has successfully tackled food insecurity by feeding 20 percent of the world s population with only 9 percent of the world s arable land and one-third of the world s average per capita fresh water resources. The country s success in meeting the UN s Millennium Development Goals is widely regarded as providing an example for others to follow. Notably, between 1990 and 2005, more than 470 million people in China were lifted out of extreme poverty.

FAO CHINA S FUTURE VISION As one of the leading UN agencies in the promotion of SSC, FAO is firmly committed to working with China to boost agricultural development, with expanded partnerships and by using innovative and flexible SSC modalities that are responsive to the needs of host countries. Enhance the exchange of knowledge, technology and innovations Facilitate SSC policy dialogue and exchange among policy-makers Promote platforms for knowledge networking Mainstream SSC to achieve national development strategies FAO/Simon Maina
