1 WWF-VIETNAM STRATEGY BRIEF STRATEGY VN 2015 Cat Tien National Park Kayleigh Ghiot / WWF

2 INTRODUCTION Vietnam lies in the Greater Mekong region, one of the most biologically diverse areas on the planet. The rich natural resources support the livelihoods and wellbeing of millions of people in mainland South East Asia. As part of WWF-Greater Mekong, WWF-Vietnam is working to conserve the region s biodiversity and build a secure, sustainable future for its people. Home to 16 percent of the world s flora and fauna species, Vietnam has an equally diverse landscape of mountain ranges, tropical rainforests, mangroves, dry forests, sandy coasts, oceans, rivers and lakes. Its landscapes have been identified as belonging to part of the 200 Global ecoregions the world s most biologically important areas to conserve for future generations. However, many species are threatened or endangered due to habitat loss, poorly planned infrastructure, climate change, unsustainable farming methods and poaching. Therefore conservation education, policy change and cooperation on a local and corporate level are crucial. WWF will focus on priority areas such as the Annamites mountains, which run along the border with Laos and Cambodia and the Mekong Delta, one of the largest and most fertile deltas in Asia. Both landscapes have ecological and economic importance to the country, and many people are dependent on the natural ecosystems and the services they provide. VIETNAM IS CHANGING... WWF was one of the first international non-government organisations to work in Vietnam. WWF scientists first entered the country and the region in the early 1980s. In the space of a decade, over 1000 new species of flora and fauna were identified, marking a new age of discovery. Since then Vietnam has evolved rapidly; its booming population and economy are placing ever greater pressure on its biodiversity and natural resources. If WWF is to be successful in its mission to stop the degradation of the natural environment and to build a future in which humans live in harmony with nature, we need to change the way we re working to meet the new challenges and to contribute to the global conservation goals.

4 OUR GOAL FOR 2020 Our goal is effective conservation, sustainable management and climate change resilience across Vietnam, whilst further extending our influence in order to provide critical environmental strategies for sustainable development of local livelihoods and the national economy. WWF-VIETNAM 5 YEAR STRATEGY In our new five year strategy, WWF-Vietnam will focus our efforts where there is the greatest opportunity for conservation impact. Our strength lies in the breadth and depth of our 20 year experience in country, but we need to improve how we share knowledge and our capacity for innovation. We need to engage with government, businesses, civil society organisations (CSOs), communities, and individuals more than ever before. We ll be supporting the government in their sustainable land use planning, their policy development on wildlife trade and their sustainable production processes (for both the domestic and international market). Within Vietnam, we aim to empower individuals and corporations to support, promote and action initiatives that result in humans living in harmony with nature. WWF-Vietnam will work in strengthening, empowering and enabling the CSOs in engagement and participation in the decision making process. This will ensure that it is actioned throughout programme development and implementation. Another crucial area WWF-Vietnam will focus on is ensuring livelihood security (food, water, energy, economic and social) for communities that live in and around PAs and other priority sites, as well as helping reduce pressure on the natural resources that they depend on.

Our goal for 2020 is effective conservation, sustainable management and climate change resilience across Vietnam, whilst further extending our influence in order to provide critical environmental strategies for sustainable development of local livelihoods and the national economy. WWF-Vietnam will work to protect the global and regional priority species such as the elephant, rhino, gibbon, Saola, muntjac and sarus crane. We will support the protection and restoration of the natural capital and ecosystems of priority areas including Central Annamites, Mekong Delta, and the trans-boundary area of the Eastern Plain landscapes. STRATEGIES TO ACHIEVE OUR 2020 GOALS: Strategy one: Mainstreaming natural capital to enable green growth Strengthening protected area management Species conservation, including transboundary cooperation with Laos PDR and Cambodia Protection and restoration of natural habitats Combating wildlife crime, including illegal poaching and illegal wildlife trade. Strategy two: Safeguarding conservation targets in priority areas Supporting policy & legislation improvement Strengthening land use & sector planning, including solutions to address the degradation of the Mekong Delta landscape Promoting sustainable infrastructure (including hydro-power) and influencing investment flows Developing sustainable financing models for communities livelihoods and conservation Developing alternative livelihood models Promoting water stewardship & addressing water governance in the Mekong Delta Encouraging policy advocacy to address Vietnam s footprint in other countries in the region.

6 SUSTAINABLE FARMING AND PRODUCTION METHODS Changing the way key commodities are produced, processed, consumed and financed & reducing their environmental and social impact while improving sustainability. Strategy three: Promoting sustainable production and consumption Ensuring sustainable production of key commodities that impact biodiversity in priority landscapes and those that significantly contribute to humanity s footprint Influencing and changing the approach of corporations that have high production and consumption impacts on priority landscapes Greening investment flows from investors involved in supply chain/ commodity trading Influencing consumer choices (green consumption), including enabling greener sourcing & procurement. Sustainable shrimp farming, South Vietnam Kayleigh Ghiot / WWF Strategy four: Securing climate change resilience and promoting sustainable energy Climate change adaptation and mitigation including promoting ecosystem based adaptation, climate smart production models, REDD+ and other WWF initiatives such as Earth Hour and City Challenges Promoting renewable energy and energy efficiency (low carbon development): strongly targeting corporate and local communities Sustainable financing, policy advocacy, environmental education and awareness raising, CSO (Civil Society Organisation) and CBO (Community Based Organisation) strengthening/engagement, corporate engagement, water stewardship, livelihood and gender, are seen as the cross cutting themes throughout the implementation of the strategic plan.

WWF- VIETNAM 2030 VISION We strive for a future where WWF-Vietnam is recognised as the leading conservation organisation in the country and strongly rooted in Vietnam; bringing solutions and support to government and other key players in meeting the country s development challenges. We aim for humanity s footprint to stay within Vietnam s capacity to sustain the full diversity of species and ecosystems, and the key services they provide, thus contributing to a more secure and sustainable future. Ultimately, we envision that the ecological integrity and biodiversity of Vietnam s priority areas are maintained and restored; playing a critical role in conserving the overall ecological integrity of the Greater Mekong region.
