3 IN THE FIELDS AND ON THE GROUND Dust is no friend of the farmer. It gets over and into everything, blanketing crops and jamming equipment. Dust turns an efficient farm into a maintenance nightmare that comes on top of the usual cost-return worries. Not to mention the unrelenting presence of drought the very thing that sets the dust swirling in the first place. Southeast Australia is in the grip of a drought worse than many can remember, with well over a year of below average rainfall right across New South Wales, central Queensland, and large parts of Victoria and South Australia. Given how important farming and agriculture is for every Australian the sector is worth about $60 billion a year and brings in about $45 billion in export revenue according to ABARES our farmers deserve every edge they can get. One edge can come out of thin air. Compressed air. Air compressors have been used on farms for decades to do everything from inflating tyres and painting sheds to keeping down weeds. So if you want your farm to run more efficiently, an air compressor could be the answer. It certainly was for crop farmer, Brian Feder, from Bordertown area in Victoria, who dropped into see the team at the Mallee-Speed Machinery Field Days Show. Brian attended the show in 2017 and purchased a new Sullair 185A Diesel Portable compressor, together with the Sullair Air Gun kit. Brian farms a variety of crops including barley, maize, beans and lentils, and was in the market for a reliable compressor to blow down and clean his header machinery during harvesting season. Dirty headers affect product quality, harvesting efficiency and pose a fire hazard. It has never missed a beat, and starts first time, every time he said. Brian is happy with his Sullair 185A compressor purchase and he has been using it regularly over the past 12 months. Used with a bit of know-how, an air compressor should cover a whole range of tasks. The key is quality. Without an air compressor that is robust and reliable, no task gets done. Instead, you get a list of time wasting (often expensive) problems to add to the ones you were trying to tick off in the first place. Quality means buying equipment with a proven record for delivering under all sorts of conditions. Plus the responsive support you need to keep everything on track. That means Sullair Australia. Sullair Australia is a global expert and a major supplier of portable industrial diesel compressors and industrial drill compressors, as well as utility and open frame compressors. The extensive global product suite is engineered to perform in tough Australian conditions across hard working industries from small workshops and the mining industry to farms of all kinds. So when it comes to making the most of air on your farm, Sullair Australia is sure to have an air compressor solution to meet your on-farm requirements. HERE S A FEW OF THE MORE INNOVATIVE USES: Orchard protection Mount an air compressor to the back of a ute, and with the right attachments you ve got a sprayer to reach the highest-growing fruit trees. Moving grain Compressed air can power conveying systems to move grain into silos. The use of a pressure vacuum in an enclosed pipeline is a safe way to move dry goods without risk of contamination or damage. Pumping water Submersible water pumps can run on compressed air, giving you a great backup to electrically powered pumps. Storing wind energy Air compressors can even be used to store excess energy generated by wind turbines. p 3

5 CATCHING UP WITH CHARLIE It s an essential farm tool. When I first got my 185 I took it up to the house to please my wife by blowing out the pagoda and cobwebs around the outside of our house. She was very happy with me for doing that. We caught up with Charlie McCuish from Springhill Farms for a quick chat Q. What is your favourite Sullair product? A. We ve got the 185 off the trailer. I think it s about 12 months old now. We ve made a couple of modifications on the front with adding a tool box for our safety gear. It uses a diesel engine which is really reliable. We needed to use our warranty last month to the fix a minor valve leak in the water trap. We received the new part, no questions asked, within 3-4 days. Denver and the Sullair regional support team do an excellent job, we love working them. Q. How would you describe your business? A. Basically we own and operate on a 5,000 acre property near Horsham. We grow and harvest wheat, barely, canola, lentils and faber beans. We re a family run business so everyone chips in. We ve been operating for over 20 years with no intentions of slowing down, weather permitting. Q. What is your background? A. I grew up on a small farm. When I left home, I went out and got some work experience on other farms before getting married to my wonderful wife. We moved in with my father in law on to Springhill Farms and have been here ever since. Q. And how s your farm doing? A. We ve had two good years since 2016, but we ve also had our fair share of droughts. We re always dealing with weed control and dust during the harvest. You ve got to be really dynamite on the weeds. Crop rotation and is crucial so that you re not allowing the weeds to build up resistance. Q. What is the most difficult job you ve had involving compressed air? A. We mainly use portable compressed air for blowing down the harvest. It s a constant battle getting dust off the crops. Compressed air is also great with blowing down hay bailers and cleaning the floors of my workshop. Q. Where do you see the industry moving in the next 5-10 years? A. There are challenges all the time but I can see improvements happening all around the farming and agriculture industry here in Australia. We re getting access to far better technology and machinery such as satellite imaging to pin point bio mass in the products and the yield monitors are getting better as well. Q. What is your proudest Sullair moment? A. Teaching my son to use the compressor. He s 22 and uses it 3-4 times a day. Sullair products really help us to manage the farm on a daily basis. I d recommend Sullair to any farmer, It s a top product. p 5
