Kuli Kuli 2017 Impact Report

Mission 3x calcium 4x iron Kuli Kuli believes that everyone deserves to thrive. Our mission is to use nutrient rich plants as a tool to improve nutrition and livelihoods worldwide.

Vision Kuli Kuli partners with farmers around the world to grow high-quality moringa for export in addition to using it to improve nutrition locally. Kuli Kuli s vision is to create a world where everyone can access the nutritional power of moringa. At Kuli Kuli, we intend to be the leading provider of unique superfood products, beginning with moringa. Our goal is to drive sustainable economic growth and promote regenerative agricultural practices through responsible sourcing and agricultural capacity building.

WHAT WE DO Our expert staff assists suppliers every step along the way from farm management to post harvest processing, quality assurance, and export guidelines. By going the extra step with our suppliers we are able to build security in our own supply chain while also supporting these local businesses to grow and achieve greater financial security. Kuli Kuli supports farmers through capacity building in the form of technical assistance, financial guarantees and ongoing partnership. Our purchases enable farmers to plant additional acreage of Moringa with the security of guaranteed purchases. Farmers can also use our purchase orders to receive local bank financing.

2017 Impact Areas 1. Sustainable Livelihoods & Women s Empowerment 2. Nutritional Security 3. Agriculture & Environment

2017 Accomplishments >$400K of moringa purchased 736 acres sustainably managed 365 Livelihoods supported > 10 suppliers coached on quality, processing, and export readiness Approved 12 new suppliers with 14 in the pipeline 49% of farmers supported were women

Sustainable Livelihoods & Women s Empowerment In 2017 we grew our supplier network 200%, supporting over 500 farmers, 49% of which were female. To date we have provided more than $1.5 million in income to women-led farming cooperatives, nonprofits and family farmers. We have been able to expand our supply chain exponentially by coaching new suppliers to achieve export standards and exceed quality requirements. For example, if a farmer does not have a prepared HACCP plan, we will share resources and information on how to develop it. If they are showing test results to be outside of Kuli Kuli's high quality specifications, we work with them to understand their processes and identify the opportunities for improvement. These capacity building efforts have expanded our supply chain exponentially, as ultimately no supplier is turned away. A win win situation for us and the farmers we work with around the world!

2017 Shift: Coaching Farmers from Seed to Shelf In 2017, Kuli Kuli widened it s supply chain by lending coaching and resources to suppliers who have struggled meeting the requirements necessary to supply to Kuli Kuli, from quality to regulatory documents. This means sharing knowledge from the farm level to preparing their product for export. - Greater impact through empowering and capacity building - Deeper relationships and collaboration resulting in mutual benefits - Network of suppliers able to produce high quality moringa and in return have a guaranteed purchaser

Nutritional Security Moringa s high levels of protein, calcium, iron, and vitamin C have led many international development organizations to advocate the plant as a "natural nutrition for the tropics." With a rise in demand for moringa, an increase in production and consequential consumption is occurring in the communities where moringa is grown. Kuli Kuli is incentivizing communities that struggle with malnutrition to invest in a nutrient-dense plant that will nourish their community, both nutritionally and economically. One supplier survey found that 57% of their employees learned about moringa through their employment and 52% reported consuming moringa regularly as a result. Beyond incentivizing supplier communities to consume moringa, Kuli Kuli s primary nutritional impact is on it s American customers who now have access to, as well as the knowledge about, this nutrient-dense plant. With over 68% of Americans saying they would like more convenient ways to consume greens, Kuli Kuli has brought 4 moringa products to market, helping American consumers to now easily incorporate greens into their diet.

Agriculture and Environment Moringa farms have the potential to sequester between 80 metric tons to 200 metric tons of carbon dioxide per hectare, per year. We can compare this to a typical passenger vehicle which emits about 4.7 metric tons of carbon dioxide per year, meaning that one hectare of moringa trees would take the equivalent of 17 to 40 passenger cars off the road per year. Kuli Kuli has already enabled the planting of over 1 million moringa trees internationally to date. These trees are actively reducing atmospheric carbon concentrations while providing employment and nutrition for hundreds of farmers. Moringa trees also act as wind barriers, prevent erosion, improve hydrological cycles, conserve soil and provide semi-shade, which is useful in intercropping systems where intense direct sunlight can damage crops.

The Kuli Kuli Difference We believe that through direct partnerships and ethical sourcing we can generate sustainable livelihoods, empower women, end malnutrition, and promote regenerative agricultural practices throughout the world. The Kuli Kuli difference is not just the quality of our final products, but the positive impact our business model creates for people and planet throughout our supply chain.

Supplier Spotlights: Benin Kuli Kuli understands that to make the greatest impact we must support farmer partners whose moringa may not yet be up to exporting standards in order to get their farms on the fast track to meeting the requirements. We work with female farmers like Pierrette, an incredible woman running a moringa operation with women s coops in Benin. These moringa suppliers inspire Kuli Kuli with their stories and affirm the impact moringa can have on the lives of women worldwide.

Nicaragua Kuli Kuli works with a family owned moringa farm that has supplied to Kuli Kuli for over 3 years. Muriel Linarte, head supervisor of the farm, has plans to educate more Nicaraguans on the benefits of moringa so that they use more of it in their everyday life. Many of the women in our community had never heard of moringa, even though it grows all over Nicaragua. We want to not only provide more jobs, but also better nutritional and educational opportunities for them and their children. - Muriel Linarte

What s on the Horizon We know that moringa provides valuable solutions to a myriad of environmental and social issues. As our business grows we are dedicated to understanding exactly what impact our business activities have on people s lives and the environment. We are therefore moving forward with a robust impact management plan for 2018 and beyond that will enable Kuli Kuli to deepen our impact. We are also looking into opportunities to become carbon neutral and make our packaging more sustainable. We are currently in conversation with over 70 moringa suppliers around the world and in the running for three grants that will be used to strengthen our supply chain in West Africa.
