2 Teaching Activities Teaching entomology at graduate and post graduate level Number of students guided: M.Sc 1 Research Activities Projects in hand (as PI) Title of research theme: Improving livelihoods through Knowledge Partnerships and Value Chains of Bee Products and Services in the Himalayas Funding agency : International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development, Kathmandu, Nepal Duration: ( ) Phase I, ( ) Phase II Objectives: To enhance the resilience of mountain people to manage the effects of global change To increase the income of mountain men and women by promoting the value chains of bee products and pollination services through the building of human and institutional capacities and regional cooperation Salient achievements: Curriculum for trainer s resource manual for farmers training in beekeeping finalized by participatory approach. Nine new topics included after gap analysis of existing curriculum Technical support to CHEA in launching studies/ action research to better understand the value of pollination to agriculture has been provided to conduct pollination research in apple belt of Uttrakhand. Survey studies to collate existing knowledge on pro poor value chains for bee products and services. Society for Technology and Development Mandi, our Joint project partner provided with technical collaboration with Post harvest Department of our university to provide the techniques for making ginger honey drinks. Completed projects (as PI) Title of research theme: Indigenous Honey bees of the Himalayas: A community based approached to conserving Biodiversity and increasing farm productivities. Funding agency : International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development, Kathmandu, Nepal Duration: ( ) Phase I, ( ) Phase II

3 Objectives: Apis cerana and crop pollination surveys Setting up and management of apiary and data collection Action research on A. cerana selection and crop pollination Training farmers who keep apiaries of A. cerana and use them for crop pollination Training of individual farmers and follow up Training of women farmers groups and follow up Training of fruit farming families and follow up Organization of exhibitions, preparing other publicity materials and publications Advanced training of Bhutanese and Nepalese farmers/beekeepers on A. cerana management and role of honeybees in crop pollination Salient achievements: An increase in fruit set has been recorded due to placement of Apis cerana in apple orchard. Tiun area has been found as potential gene pool area of Apis cerana. Pockets in Lahaul valley of district Lahaul and Spiti have been identified as natural isolated mating yard for selective breeding programme in Apis cerana. Short distance migratory sites during dearth period have been identified. Improved management practices in Apis cerana for better performance and minimizing absconding has been developed. Mass queen rearing technique standardized. April is ideal month for queen rearing under Katrain condition. Apiary of selected A.cerana established at Beekeeping Research Station Katrain. Plus colonies have been marked after evaluating the preliminary selected colonies. Kothi area, which is rich in bee flora, has been found as potential migrating site (short distance) in Kullu valley. Post graduate student from university have given research work on A. cerana selection and management which is being carried out at Beekeeping and Horticulture research Sub Station, Katrain. International beekeeping training on A.cerana management and its role in pollination has been imparted to the trainees from Nepal and Bhutan Hindi version of pollination manual has been printed. Book entitled Management of indigenous honeybee Apis cerana has been published.

4 Impact Farmers were convinced about role of honeybees in pollination and income generation from Apis cerana beekeeping through renting of colonies to the orchardists. They showed great interest in acquiring training programmes and adopting this venture at community and female working group level. 20 important research papers: 1. Dogra G.S., J.K. Gupta and H.K.
