8 Preface Voorwoord 2017; Seker die jaar wat elke boer in Suid Afrika net weer laat besef het hoe groot die Genade is wat ons uit die Liewe Vader se hand ontvang. Connie J v Vuuren Ek is oortuig dat as ons gaan sit en dink waar ons verlede jaar die tyd was en hoe dit toe gelyk het regoor Suid Afrika, kan ons almal net sê: Baie Dankie vir groot genade, reën in oorvloed, gras so hoog soos die drade, Beefmaster koeie so mooi as wat hulle kan wees en op die koop toe baie goeie beespryse. Die 2016 veilingseisoen het bo verwagting goed afgeloop, op, ten spyte van omstandighede wat van alle kante gedruk het! Dit is beslis ʼn pluimpie vir ons ras. Geluk aan elke teler er wat veiling gehou het. ʼn Groot woord ord van dank aan elke teler wat sy deel doen om ons ras te bevorder deur hul advertensie veldtogte, boeredae, edae en uitstallings s by skoue. Dit is net ʼn bewys van jul passie, toewyding en geloof in hierdie wonderlike beeste waarmee e ons boer. Kyk ek na SA Stamboek ELITE toekennings ennings het hierdie e toekennings ngs gesog geraak ak en dien as maatstaf at af van uitmuntendheid eid in diere-aantekening ante ningng in die Suid-Afrikaanse a veebedryf. Die hoeveelheid e heid telers wat toekennings ontvang ng het hierdie jaar, bewys ook dat die passie en toewyding daar ar is om die Beefmasters e die beste ras in die land te maak. Tragedy struck, and we had to say goodbye odby to one of the giants in our industry, when Manual a de Costa died. As one of his children said at his memorial service n groot boom het geval you will l be missed Manny. Our sincere condolences to Manny s ny s family. Daar is ook in Namibië n groot leemte emte na die afsterwe van Louis Opperman. Die passievolle Namibiese Beefmaster teler, het sy eerste Beefmaster bul in 1990 gekoop, en was n bekende gesig op baie veilings. Ons harte gaan uit na sy gesin. On the positive side the Beefmaster clan were blessed with several new Beefmaster- Babies. Congratulations to all the parents. May these precious bundles of joy fill your lives with happiness. The Society are very excited about the progress made during 2016 with the genomics project. The Beefmaster efmaster breeders outdone themselves. We managed to collect c more samples than required from us in both runs. We have also joined forces with the BBU BU and expect great results. A big thank you to SA Studbook ok and the ARC, for all the effort, and guidance throughout the project. Baie dankie aan elke teler en raadslid wat weer die afgelope jaar gehelp het om die Beefmasters steeds die vinnig - groeiendste ras in Suid Afrika te maak. Dit is nog n bewys van die passie en toewyding waarmee geboer word. Die dames in die kantoor; julle is net so passievol soos die telers en daarvoor sê ons almal baie dankie. Baie sterkte aan elke teler met die nuwe veiling seisoen wat ophande is. Ons sien uit daarna om julle almal by die Algemene Jaarvergadering en Nasionale Veiling die 5 & 6de Julie 2017 te sien. 12 Documented Beefmaster Efficiency: A Grand Slam Home Run!!! By M. Doyle Sanders-BBU International Committee & Ryan Doerner- Genetic Development Center Over the past few years, Beefmasters have demonstrated strong efficiency in various areas important to beef breeders. Some of these efficiency merits have become recognized in the feedlots, in the packing plants, working cattle pens, in the sales barns, and among commercial breeders. As the breed is expanding worldwide, there have been questions from animal scientists and breeders from foreign countries requesting BBU to validate and verify some of the facts and claims about Beefmaster efficiency factors. Over the past decade, some Beefmaster breeders in Texas have participated with contemporary bulls and some heifers in various all breed performance tests. The calves start at about 9-10 months of age with a conditioning program to acclimate the entire group then they run through a scientific testing protocol for several months to compare data among a set of calves for each test group from several breeds. Focus is on bulls but smaller groups tests are also run on heifers. Both Bos Indicus and Bos Taurus cattle are used in these e tests. Continue Beefmaster SA Journal 2017

15 A highly accurate computerized measurement system called Grow Safe Technology is used to measure each calf s intake consumption every time the calf eats from the bin that is weighed at beginning to end of their intake. An electronic ear chip confirms which calf is eating from a single bin. This is a continuous around the clock free ration basis on a set nutrition of mixed grain and fiber silage with no other intake in pasture or loft. Every 2 weeks, the animals are weighed and computations are made for each calf on amount of feed consumed versus weight gained. The number of head in each breed group are scientifically assessed to be within comparable contemporary groups. The Genetic Development Center in Millican, Texas is part of Sexing Technologies, LLC of Navasota, that has been conducting these feed efficiency tests since Earlier, the Beef Development Center of Texas conducted similar all breed performance tests in this region until about 2008 with the same Grow Safe Technology. Beefmaster bulls were used from different BBU breeders from Central Texas in several of these tests with comparable end results. Beefmasters typically out perform all comers. In 2006, average Beefmaster calves from one breeder s herd were the highest indexing bulls in all of the categories for weight gain and for feed to gain ratio. Brahman(Bos Indicus) influenced cattle with Beefmaster, Brangus, and Brahman were the top index breeds in efficiency while the Bos Taurus (Continental breeds) with Angus, Charolais, and Limousin were on the bottom. This conclusion has been repeated in three additional summer and fall tests for 2013 and the Summer Test for 2014 with bulls from other Beefmaster breeders. The results have been consistent in all of the tests conducted. Beefmasters have led the entire pack in Average Daily Weight Gain and the Feed to Gain Ratio. The data for some of the top Beefmaster bulls in the tests have been even more phenomenal. Daily weight gains recorded have in some cases been just below the intake weight for some of these powerful animals. When averaging the data from several animals from the different breeds, comparisons can be made between breed average values. The results put the Beefmasters again at the top for both Average Daily Gain (ADG) and Feed to Gain Ratio in comparison with all the other breeds tested. Evaluation of the data for summer 2014 was recently published that shows Beefmasters as #1 for Average Daily Gain among Red Brangus, Santa Gertrudis, Brangus, Braunvei, Angus, and Wagyu, in that order. Beefmasters were also #1 for Feed to Gain Ratio among Santa Gertrudis, Wagyu, Red Brangus, Angus, Braunvei, and Brangus, in that order. On a weight gain efficiency comparison basis of these breeds for this test, Beefmasters exhibited a 1.24 higher ADG ratio than Braunveih, a higher ADG ratio than Angus, and 1.54 higher average ADG than Wagyu of the Bos Taurus. Beefmasters also showed a higher ADG by 5% on the second place Red Brangus with 10% to 15% on the next closer Brangus and Santa Gertrudis breeds. Again this confirmed the higher performance for Bos Indicus than Bos Taurus. For Feed Efficiency comparison, Beefmasters exhibited even stronger performance by having the lowest Feed to Gain Ratio. On an index average basis, this compared the breeds to Beefmasters with Santa Gertrudis being 7 % less efficient, Wagyu as 8.5% less efficient, Red Brangus as 8.6% less efficient, Angus at 16% less efficient, Braunvei at 19% less efficient, and Brangus at 21% less efficient. From a feedlot to harvest basis, this efficiency information is very important to economics for the feed calf owner, the feedlot and the packer. In comparing the optimum slaughter weight for specific marketing purposes, a target harvest weight is often the target live weight for determining optimum rations and feeding duration. That consideration in the formula ends with total feed to meet weight gain need at time of harvest. Beefmasters will shorten the timeframe by higher daily weight gain to time of harvest. That means less feed consumed at a lower feedlot cost. The feed efficiency is confirmed by the lower feed to gain ratio which further proves that you can achieve faster gains at less feed consumed. Win. Win. Disposition is of importance to efficient ranch operation for ease of handling, less stress, and higher yields -with improved beef quality. Higher productive longevity, higher weaning and yearling weights, enhanced fertility, stronger maternal traits and better milking ability: All Grand Slam Home Runs by Beefmasters. I m an inheritor of a legacy of relentless labour, unwavering faith, and unstoppable commitment. I have wept at the tragedies, the droughts, the disasters, the disappointments, the floods, the fires, the failures, the unanswered prayers; I have grieved, bowed my head and knee in confusion at the grave of my workers, my children, my live stock, my country and sometimes - a little bit of myself. I ve also leapt with joy, jubilant in the early spring rain; laughed ecstatically when crops grew, more rain came; worshipped when the yield exceeded all expectations. I ve been called upon to be friend, doctor, coach, referee, player, banker, taxi driver, psychologist, engineer, judge, pastor, teacher, parent and grandparent. I had to be perfect at it every time; and I failed many a time. I ride the pendulum between pain and pleasure; between lows and highs; between despair and hope; between doubt and faith. I was allowed to see how life is reborn, overcoming the obvious finality of death. I am a warrior against poverty and famine and hopelessness and negativity and ignorance and indignity and injustice and destruction and erosion of hope. I ve been bestowed this great honour of being a trustee, a guardian of the soil; I am the most privileged of all who fashion the earth; I have a past that s a rich legacy; A present that s challenging, adventurous and tough; And I m allowed to spend my days preparing the future for those who come after me. Hy is op die plaas Somali, wat sy trots was ter ruste gelê. Louis was n boer in die Gobabis distrik en oudleerling van Wennie Du Plessis Hoërskool. Hy het studeer by Neudam Landboukollege buite Windhoek. Louis was n aktiewe ondersteuner van die Dorslandtrek Gedenkfees enkf ees en het die herinneringe neri ring e aan die kultuur uur en geskiedenis eden en is van die Dorslandtrekkers ke r gekoester. er. Hy was een en van Namibië ië se top beesboere es bo er e en was baie lief vir sy Beefmaster efma er boerdery ery wat bekend staan as Bar O Beefmasters. Louis het vanaf met Beefmasters begin boer. Sy eerste er Beefmaster ef er bulle le het hy in Zimbabwe bwe aangekoop by Mnr. Zietsman. Van toe af het hy gereeld eld Beefmaster efma er bulle le in Suid-Afrika ika aangekoop. Hy word oorleef deur sy vrou Sonja, vier dogters en sewe e kleinkinders. i Twee van sy skoonseuns gaan help met die boerdery. ery. Manny Da Costa Manuel da Costa (65), Oorlede 25 Januarie 2017 Manny da Costa What a privilege to have known you! Albert Einstein said, The value of a man should be seen in what he gives and not in what he is able to receive. There are no better words to describe Manny Da Costa; you knew how to make a total stranger feel like an old friend! One of the most humble, kindest people I have ever had the privilege il to meet. A true gentleman eman and inspiration to everyone that knew you. The news of your untimely passing feels so unreal! Our hearts and prayers rs are with the Da Costa family at this most difficult time. ʼn Ware Gentleman wat almal met soveel respek behandel e het, altyd nederig en met ʼn glimlag op sy gesig, het hy die vermoë gehad om n totale vreemdeling te laat voel soos ʼn jarelange vriend. Manny Da Costa was nie net ʼn teler nie, maar ook betrokke as raadslid van die Beefmaster Beestelersgenootskap van SA vir baie jare.
