2 Objectives At the end of the reading, students should be able to: Explain clearly what is meant by integrated pest management (IPM) Outline clearly the three (3) principles of IPM List accurately the three(3) components of IPM Describe clearly the three (3) components of an IPM Outline clearly guidelines to be followed for the storage/application of pesticides in food handling establishments Outline clearly all details to be left in the report submitted to food handling establishment operator by the PCO Outline completely information to be included in a Pest Control Policy222 2

3 Overview Keeping the establishment clean will help prevent foods from becoming contaminated Pests will not be attracted to a clean dry environment Pests such as rodents pose a serious food safety risk A cockroach infestation can be difficult to control 3

4 IPM Integrated Pest Management is an approach to controlling pests that attempts to minimize or eliminate the use of potentially harmful pesticides It involves the selection and integration of several control strategies in a manner that are complementary 4

5 Principles of IPM IPM is based on the principles of: Maintaining the pest population at acceptable levels rather than eradicating the pest Selection and integration of control strategies in a manner that is complementary Monitoring of the pest population to determine when Action Thresholds have been reached 5

6 Components of an IPM programme Education is a fundamental criteria to effectively control pests: Denying pest access to the establishment Deny the pests food, water and a hiding or nesting place - SANITATION Controlling or eliminating any pests that enter Working closely with a licensed pest control operator (PCO) 6

7 Keep pests out of the establishment Design building properly to prevent the entry of pests Screen windows/vents Seal cracks in floors/walls Floor drains, electrical/ventilation openings Keep exterior openings closed tightly Fill holes around pipes Install door sweeps/selfclosing doors Inspect deliveries for pests/pest infestation 7

8 Deny pest shelter, food and Dispose of garbage quickly Keep garbage containers clean/tightly covered Store recyclables away from buildings Store food/supplies away from walls 20 cm/6 inches; 60.96cm/18 inches off the floor Follow FIFO when storing food Clean the establishment thoroughly Clean as you go not as often as is possible but as often as is necessary hiding place 8

9 PCO support Ensure that PCO is licensed and chemicals being used are approved Before the PCO applies chemicals Remove all food and food-contact surfaces Cover immovable equipment and food-contact surfaces After pesticide has been applied Wash, rinse, and sanitize food-contact surfaces Keep corresponding MSDS on the premises 9

10 Guidelines If pesticides are stored on premises Keep them in original containers Lock them in cabinets away from food-storage and food-preparation areas Dispose of them as per local regulations Keep corresponding MSDS on the premises Rodent bait should never be placed in food storage, preparation or service areas! 10

11 Guidelines Inspection must be conducted by PCO All pest sightings must be documented All treatment procedures must be recorded and a report left with the proprietor. The report should include: Date of treatment Inspection findings Name of chemical used Types of pests treated and areas treated Concentration of chemical Name of company Name of PCO 11

12 Pest Control Policy The IPM Plan should include the following: Name of the company (date) Team of developers/authors and date must include line staff members Identification of pests - habits, life-cycle Identification of contributing problems Plan for correcting structural, sanitation and behavioral practices Description of constructional features, preventative maintenance Description of sanitation measures Description of food inspection activities Description of procedures of PCO inclusive of documentation policies Description of training activities for staff Forms inspection for rodent sightings Procedure for conducting inspection/documentation/action Implementation of monitoring program including documentation. Documentation from pest control professional 12

13 Conclusion Pest can spread disease, damage food and cause significant damage to property Deny pests access to the establishment Deny pests food, water, and shelter Work with a licensed PCO to eliminate pests that do enter A documented Pest Management Plan is needed for an effective Pest Management 13
