1 CASS COUNTY 4-H GOAT PROJECT RECORD BOOK Level 1 (Grades 3 5) For each year in the project (in this same level), each member will complete 2 activities, for a total number of 6 activities if three years in this level. For example, if a 5 th grader loses his/her record sheet and acquires a new one at the office, they need to complete 6 total activities before turning the record sheet in not just two (if they have been in the project multiple years). 3 General Guidelines: Each year you enroll in the Goat Project, you are to complete two (2) of the activities included in this record book. You may not repeat activities. The information can be located in your 4-H Goat Resource Manual. Complete the feed and financial report included in this record book. ACTIVITY 1 Breeds of Goats There are many different dairy breeds of goats. List 6 dairy goat breeds and give a brief description of each. These can be dairy, meat and/or pygmy goat breeds. Breed Origin Description ACTIVITY 2 Dairy Goat terms 1. What is a purebred goat? 2. What is colostrum? 3. How long is the gestation period? 4. Doe? Buck? Kid? Castrated Kid? 3

4 ACTIVITY 3 Parts of a Dairy Goat Identify the parts of the goat. See supplement pages for help. ACTIVITY 4 Selecting Your Goat What are four things you need to consider when making your choice for your 4-H goat?

5 ACTIVITY 5 Goat Health Care Regular observation of your goats can allow you to determine if the animal is healthy. Animals can tell you when they are sick. List five (5) signs to look for that may help you know your goat is not feeling well. You may find some extra information in the supplement ACTIVITY 6 Animal Management Practices Your animal requires adequate space to grow properly. Failure to provide the necessary feed, water, and living space for your goat will result in poor performance. Describe the management practices you did for your goat, include waterers, feeders, space, shade, and etc. ACTIVITY 7 List Things to take to the fair. Make sure you list the things you will need from the paper work to the shovel and rake. 5
