IPBES 2

IPBES assesses the state of biodiversity and of the ecosystem services it provides to society, in response to requests from decision makers IPBES, as a science-policy platform, with the aim to better inform decision-making process Global assessment Regional assessments (ECA, Americas, Africa, Asia) Thematic assessments (Pollinators, Scenarios, Land degradation) 3

IPBES Works as intergovernmental platfom on biodiversity and ecosystem services In partnership of UNEP, UNESCO, FAO and UNDP Administered by UNEP Platform responds to requests from Governments, including those conveyed to it by multilateral environmental agreements Platorm identifies key scientific information needed for policymakers performing regular and timely assessments of knowledge on biodiversity and ecosystem services Platform identifies policy-relevant tools and methodologies, arising from assessments Platform identifies key capacity-building needs to improve the sciencepolicy interface 4

IPBES Bureau Addresses requests related to IPBES Work programme Oversees communication and outreach activities; Reviews progress in the implementation of decisions of the Plenary, Monitors the secretariat s performance; Organizes and helps to conduct the sessions of the Plenary; Reviews the rules and procedures; Reviews the management of resources and observance of financial rules; Advises the Plenary on coordination between IPBES and other relevant institutions; Identifies donors and develops partnership arrangements for the implementation of IPBES activities. The Plenary also assigned to the Bureau various roles in the process of preparing IPBES deliverables 5

EE UN region The lack of a common platform for conservation and sustainable biodiversity management active participation of national representatives in the establishment of the Platform and implementation of Work programme , incl. ECA assessment, transfer to the national level through policy bodies and instruments Transition of economy in recent decades has made an impact on the role of science in decision-making process related to biodiversity 11

The UN estimated that there were about 292 million people in Eastern Europe last year, 18 million less than in the early 1990s Atoyan, R. et al., 2016: Emigration and Its Economic Impact on Eastern Europe 12

Abandonment of agricultural (rural) areas changes in composition of grasslands and pastures spread of forest shoots Multiple pressures (conversion, pollution, overexploitation, invasive species expansion of ruderal vegetation; loss of plant diversity; climate change mismatch in species interactions) 13
