1 Gympie Carcass Classic 2016 In going forward from the 2015 Carcass Classic there have been a few changes which we will see in The committee has taken feedback on board from previous years in regards to backgrounding cattle and have made this a main focus for the 2016 Carcass Classic. For the very first time in the history of the competition all entries will be backgrounded for 7 weeks prior to entering the feedlot (this is compulsory). The cattle will be backgrounded on a property near Gayndah which is owned and run by M & L Berthelsen of Cooranga Charolais. Cattle will be supplemented with dry licks supplied by the team at Top Country in Munduberra with Goldmix supplying grain to the cattle prior to entry to the feedlot. We believe this process will allow the cattle to familiarise themselves with the herd and will also allow all vaccines to provide full immunity before entering the feedlot, eliminating high levels of sickness during their time on feed. The cost for the backgrounding process will be $50/head which includes both agistment and feed for the 7 weeks. Please note though, that due to the backgrounding taking place, that we will be only accepting 160 entries for the 2016 competition so get your nominations in promptly. Last year saw our final Classic fed at Gowanlock Feedlot with Les and Lois Donnelly. The committee would like to thank Les and Lois for all their hard work over the years. In 2016 the cattle will be fed at Noel & Narelle Cheshire s feedlot at Windera. Due to the set up available at the feedlot we will once again hold a Midweigh Day, where the cattle will be available for viewing in their pens. We initially ruled out the Midweigh last year due to added stress on the cattle, however we believe that not removing the cattle from their pens will cause no added stress and are happy to go ahead with the day again in The cattle will be fed for a total of 88 days in the 2016 competition. Due to the health issues that we battled last year, we would highly recommended that cattle intended for the competition are prevaccinated with 7 in 1 to ensure they are protected upon entry to the competition. Due to the extended time on feed in 2016, as well as the backgrounding process, we are hoping to achieve better weight gains therefore it is recommended that cattle start the competition slightly lighter than previous years. We would recommend cattle weighing in from kg, curfewed weight however this is only a guide. With Animal Welfare becoming a prominent topic within the Beef Industry lately, we asked all potential vendors to check cattle carefully before entry. Please do not exhibit any cattle showing signs of illness, laminitis (longer toes), lameness or cattle that have very recently been dehorned or castrated. We are still currently gathering sponsors for next year s competition, but would like to welcome new supporters of the Carcass Classic; Budget Steel, Tom Grady C.R.T, Suncorp Bank, Top Country, Connelly Dore Lawyers and East Coast Ground Preparation. We would also again like to extend our appreciation to Dan, Leanne and the team at Sullivan Livestock for being our Platinum Sponsor in 2016,

2 as well as our continuing supporters Virbac, Warrego Livestock Transport, Elanco Products and of course Goldmix Stockfeeds. Our Final Day will be held on Friday 15 th July 2016 at the Gympie Saleyards with all cattle being exhibited through the selling ring. Our Classic Four Jackpot will be worth $3000 this year, so make sure you re there to place your entry. This year we have also made a few minor adjustments to the scoring system, setting in place points for overall eating quality, as determined by the MSA Index Score. To all of our First Time Exhibitors in 2016, please make sure that you have your account details registered with Nolan Meats. Applicable forms are attached, and should be returned with your nominations. At this point our grain price is still to be confirmed, but will come in under $400 + GST for each entry. In hope to make the Carcass Classic competitive we have decided there will only be a nomination fee per exhibitor, not per beast. This means there will only be a one off fee of $60 ($85 for non-members of the GDBLG), regardless of the number of entries. We believe this will offset the cost of backgrounding therefore adding no real extra cost to exhibitors. Please find all further information, calendar of activities, nomination forms and rules etc attached. If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact the committee.
