3 SAVE Foundation SAVE is an European I-NGO linked to other international bodies. For example: specialised consultative status at the FAO, member of the IUCN, working relationship with ERFP SAVE grew out of an informal NGO network and was established in 1993 as an NGO-Umbrella organisation for the conservation of endangered breeds of domestic animals and cultivated plants SAVE has a network office in Konstanz/Germany and a project office in St. Gallen/Switzerland Network has 20 members (organisations) in 15 countries

8 Carpathians: What do we know already? A workshop was held in in Romania in 1999 Roundtable and small groups discussions developed a list of cultivated plants and livestock breeds that are endangered and should be conserved as a priority for action. Participants stressed the importance of common action to conserve endangered agrobiodiversity in the Carpathians. Search tours have taken place. There are still many gaps in knowledge.

It seems to be originally the sheep of Carpathians Ben (Central Romania) long distance transhumance shepherds. Location within country - hills of Transylvania Uses Breed morphology information, Breed colours, Breed horns information, Breed qualities information, Specific resistance or tolerance, Adaptability to specific environment - resistant against adverse environment (mountain climate, winter in open fields), capable to walk in transhumance hundreds or thousands of km. 13 Information from other sources The rural people of the Carpathians use about 20 locally occurring species of fruit At the end of the 19th Century up to 1500 introduced and original apple types were known (CZ/SK) Up to 2000 local varieties were known in the Romanian Western Carpathians 85 pear varieties collected, more than 65 varieties are extinct.

14 Information from other sources Malus sylvestris occurs in the Carpinus-Fagus wild forests collection in Slovakia has 120 genotypes Walnuts and Chestnuts in the Ukraine, Poland and Romania at the edge of the Danubian valley/carpathian foothills Rubus Carpathians are a centre of diversity in Romania more than 100 species and interspecies hybrids occur Cereal crops Carpathians are secondary heart of crop diversity Maize has a 500 year history in the Carpathians Bush bean has existed for more than 200 years here Local Potatoes pollen fertility leads to a number of local varieties
