2 The Food Foundation: Explained Vision The Challenge: Our current food system urgently needs to change. We face three major food system challenges. Firstly, in the UK our diets now pose the greatest threat to our health and well-being. Secondly, the food system accounts for an estimated 25% of global greenhouse gas emissions, and as emissions in other sectors decrease this share will rise. Thirdly, there are people in Britain who face periods when they are too poor to eat or the only food they can afford is bad for their health. The Response: The Food Foundation was set up as an independent think tank to tackle the growing challenges facing the UK s food system in the interests of the UK public. Our vision is a food system which supports the health and well-being of the UK public. We aim to achieve this through new and better food policy (public and private) that is implemented and monitored well. Throughout our work we will be looking to join up policy and practice across the food system from farm to fork, so that it is more coherent. We aim to achieve new and better food policy which is both well-implemented and well-monitored. The specific areas which we want to see change in are: Cross-government leadership on accessible, healthy and sustainable diets. Policy and practice which re-balances the food environment and choice architecture so that it supports healthy eating. This covers areas such as marketing, planning and licensing, and public food provision. Policy and practice which incentivises and regulates the food supply chain so that it supports healthy and sustainable diets. This includes impacts on price, quality, provenance, perishability, safety and availability Alongside using our influence to change policy and practice, the Food Foundation aims to generate demand for change amongst our key audiences: Government from local authority up to EU levels. Business leaders across the UK food system.
