1 ŠTATISTICKÁ ROČENKA Slovenskej republiky STATISTICAL YEARBOOK of the Slovak Republic 2013 VEDA vydavateľstvo Slovenskej akadémie vied Publishing House of the Slovak Academy of Sciences Štatistický úrad Slovenskej republiky Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic

2 PREFACE Dear readers, The twenty-second issue of the Statistical Yearbook of the Slovak Republic continues its long tradition of providing comprehensive statistical information about Slovakia, its demographic, social and economic development. As regards its thematic structure, no significant changes have been made. The selection of time series of indicators has been updated and the structure of some indicators was supplemented as well. In 2011, for the first time in history, the population and housing census was held in all European Member States at a time, using uniform or comparable definitions of surveyed indicators. Some selected indicators were included in the chapter Population. The results of the new supplementary surveys on employment of people having a long-standing health problem are presented in the chapter Labour Market. The chapter Education, in the methodological part, was extended by an overview of International Standard Classification of Education (ISCED) to be further applied into the respective tables. In the chapter Criminality and Justice a new table with data on criminals can be found. International overviews contain updated information about the main statistical structures and trends in the European Member and Candidate States. This part also includes new tables containing data on expenditure of social protection, usage and purchase of goods and services via the Internet. Besides the print version, the Statistical Yearbook is also available for download at the website ( following the expiry of a period of eight months after the date it was issued. Finally, I would like to thank the whole staff of the Statistical Office contributing to the production of a yearbook, as well as to all readers and institutions trying to improve its quality with their suggestions and comments. I would also like to thank the publishing house VEDA for publishing and distributing the yearbook. Ľudmila Benkovičová President of the Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic 8
