2 Kenya RAPID Program Overview Kenya RAPID Is a 5 year program bringing together public and private sector institutions and communities to increase access to water and sanitation for people and water for livestock and to rebuild a healthy rangeland management ecosystem The program targets to benefit-450,00 people- 113,000 People are benefiting so far with 103,000 livestock ( cattle, camels and shoats). Budget is USD 35.5 million Implementation is coordinated by the Millennium Water Alliance. Donors are USAID, SDC. Funding also comes from private sector partners The programme counties are-turkana, Isiolo, Marsabit, Garissa, and Wajir Implementation approach is facilitation. by program development partners in each of the 5 counties- Catholic Relief Services-Isiolo and Turkana; Care Kenya-Garissa; Food For the Hungry -Marsabit,;World Vision-Wajir Offices provided by and are located in County Government Offices for integrated coordination and planning 2

7 Goal and Strategic Objectives Goal: To contribute to sustainable and resilient livelihoods for communities in the Arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs). Strategic Objectives (SOs): SO 1: A responsive and accountable governance framework in place and operational at county levels that ensures sustainable provision of water and pasture SO 2: Replicable and scalable business models for sustainable WASH and livestock service delivery developed and operationalized SO 3: Communities have increased access to sustainable WASH services and improved rangeland management.

11 Best Practices on Marginal Water Supplies-in Kenya RAPID Program Kenya RAPID Program supports development of water infrastructure for multiple uses which includes kitchen gardening and small scale irrigation Water in the program counties are saline The program uses drip irrigation solar powered systems Successfully piloted in various locations of the program which includes Attir in Isiolo county, Ilbarok in Marsabit and Alimao in Wajir. Community groups grow vegetables (kales, onions and tomatoes) for household consumption and surplus sold to generate income to purchase other basis commodities
