2 Agriculture is the nation s largest industry in terms of number of people employed, capital investment, total production and services. The need has never been greater for young men and women who possess exceptional agricultural skills to produce, process and market food and fiber. Industries which provide capital, machinery, equipment, chemicals, fertilizers, seed and services used in today s food and fiber system will need ever-increasing numbers of technically trained employees. Agricultural Business Development B.B.A., Agricultural Business A.A.S. Agriculture businesses in the U.S. range from very small operations to large enterprises with annual sales in the millions of dollars. Whatever the size, these businesses compete with local, national and international markets. To be successful in today s marketplace, farm managers and owners need to spend more time making decisions and developing management skills and new markets. The agriculture business curricula combines students knowledge of production agriculture with the management and marketing practices necessary to successfully operate businesses.

3 Agricultural Science A.A.S. Agricultural science provides training in basic sciences as applied to agriculture. Four two-year degree options are available: Animal Science Option The animal science emphasis is specifically designed for students interested in the fields of dairy, livestock or equine science, and also prepares them to transfer. Agronomy (Crops and Soils) Option This curriculum deals with the production of food crops for both human consumption and livestock production, as well as the scientific study of the soil. Agriculture Technology Option This option, an elective choice for a range of agricultural courses, is customizable and intended for joining the workforce after two years. General Transfer Option This option allows a successful transfer to a variety of four-year colleges and universities. Animal Science Dairy A.A.S. Dairy Management B.Tech. The animal science dairy curriculum concentrates on dairy cattle management, emphasizing both managerial and hands-on experience. The dairy management curriculum adds business management to the science and husbandry of dairy cattle. The last semester of this four-year degree can be spent in one of three options: Cornell University s Department of Animal Science; W. H. Miner Agricultural Research Institute s Advanced Dairy Management Program; or a directed dairy-related 16-week internship.

4 Facilities Morrisville State College operates an agricultural station comprised of crop, dairy, equine and service components. The station is used as a research and teaching laboratory. Including the agricultural station, the college maintains more than 1,000 acres of farmland, managed plantations, farm ponds and wood lots. The Morrisville State College Dairy Complex This dairy facility, which is used for teaching, demonstration and student projects, houses 220 milking cows. It is equipped with an electronic-enhanced milking parlor and an advanced computer data collection system. The college s registered Holstein herd is one of the top herds in New York State for component yield and production efficiency. 5 Teaching and Research Farm The Teaching and Research Farm at Morrisville State College is used as an outdoor laboratory by students who take soil and crop science classes. Students have the opportunity to apply the knowledge they gain in their classes, as well as pursue research projects, interpret data and create presentations. Anaerobic Methane Digester The anaerobic methane digester, housed at the dairy complex, is sized to treat manure from approximately 400 milking cows and generate about 350,000 kwh per year from the recovered biogas. The system is paired with a 50 kw engine/generator set with a heat recovery system. The digester project at Morrisville State College generates data on the effectiveness of an internal combustion engine for converting biogas to energy, allows the tracking and evaluating of project data, costs, and benefits, and is being used in MSC s academic programs to transfer information to others considering anaerobic digestion systems.
