4 Making Maize Easy Maize is a very specific and detailed crop. This sometimes creates the perception of it being difficult to manage, however at Corson Maize Seed it s our aim to make maize growing and utilisation easy. Our team have a wide range of skills and experience in maize, and other forage crops to ensure farmers use the appropriate crop for their needs and achieve the best results from our products. Our product development team are constantly developing new hybrids and sourcing hybrids from a number of maize seed companies around the world. These products are then tested in New Zealand through our evaluation programme. Our team understand the needs of New Zealand growers and are always looking for improved field performance of our hybrids through both dry matter (DM) yield and plant traits. Our field team have a detailed understanding of the products we have to offer and how to get the best results from them. We can offer helpful advice from growing a successful crop through to harvesting, storing and feeding maize silage. This knowledge and advice also extends beyond maize to all forage crops, to help gain the highest return from a farm system. 4 Freephone

6 CORSON MAIZE SEED PLANTING RATES At Corson Maize Seed we are yet to be convinced that the often reported yield response at higher plant populations are reflected in commercial crops. This is especially the case when considering plant health factors and the impact these have on drought tolerance, standability, disease tolerance and overall resilience of the crop. Corson Maize Seed s published planting rate recommendations are general in nature. A detailed understanding of the growing environment is required for a specific planting rate recommendation. This should be assessed by the grower and their advisors. TRAIT RATINGS 7 Outstanding 6 Excellent 5 Above average 4 Average 3 Below average 2 Poor 1 Unacceptable - Insufficient data. 6 Freephone

10 MAIZE SEED TREATMENT Corson Maize Seed is treated with leading Seed Treatment products Poncho and Vitaflo, which play an important role in maximising plant establishment and crop yield. Poncho and Vitaflo provide highly targeted protection against the major insects and diseases that affect young maize crops. Poncho protects against: Argentine Stem Weevil Black Beetle Greasy Cutworm Poncho contains the active ingredient clothianidin, providing a high level of protection against three major insect pests during crop establishment. Poncho through it s systemic mode of action and increased spectrum offers the best early pest protection currently available in the maize market. Vitaflo protects against: Head Smut Soil borne and seedling rot diseases (including Fusarium) Vitaflo contains the active ingredients carboxin and thiram providing protection against seed and soil-borne diseases during crop establishment. Carboxin has a systemic mode of action controlling seed-borne diseases at germination and seedling emergence. Thiram has contact activity against soilborne diseases to extend the level of disease control and the disease spectrum. Vitaflo stimulates early seedling growth which is particularly evident under stress conditions. Avipel Bird Repellent NEW Avipel bird repellent is a new product which is available exclusively from Corson Maize Seed, treated on demand. Avipel contains a naturally occurring organic substance. Corson A9 has outstanding early growth for great establishment in cooler environments and its very early maturity provides reliability of silage production in regions with short growing seasons. It can also be utilised as a management option for early harvest or late planting in the lower North Island. Corson A9 develops into a plant of medium stature for its maturity with consistent, good sized ears to give an overall high yielding silage with high grain content from this very early hybrid. Neil Koevoet, Product Development and Production Manager - Corson Maize Seed Bred to suit short growing seasons, L07-A9 delivers relatively high silage yields from such an early maturity. As yield is often limited with early maturity hybrids, high feed value is critical in providing cost effective conversion of feed to milk production and L07-A9 brings with it the required feed values. 12 Freephone MAIZE SILAGE

25 Nutrition Introducing maize silage into the diet FEEDING MAIZE SILAGE: TWO ASPECTS OF ADAPTATION 1. Behavioural adaptation for cows or heifers who haven t been fed maize silage before 2. Ruminal adaptation for microbial populations to adjust to the new feed BEHAVIOURAL ADAPTATION New cows and rising two year old heifers need time with mixed age cows who are more experienced with a maize silage feeding system Expose heifers to maize silage several weeks pre-calving they ll be settled and consuming maize silage well, in time for calving PGG Wrightson Seeds. 25

26 Nutrition RUMINAL ADAPTION Types of rumen microbes that utilise starch are different to those that digest pasture Microbial populations take days to change from pasture to starch digesters Sudden change to starchy diets may increase risk of ruminal acidosis ( grain overload ). Risk depends on maize silage feeding rates, total levels of dietary fibre (NDF), and on the presence of other starchy feeds Low rates of maize silage (less than 3kg DM/cow/day) typically won t require adaptation Higher rates (more than 5kg DM/cow/day) increases requirement for adaptation Start cows on low rates of maize silage, building up to final rates over a few days. For example, if the target is 5kg DM maize silage/cow/day, start at 2kg DM for two days, lifting by a further kg DM every two days For calving cows, use time spent by cows in different mobs to gradually step up silage feeding rates: Springers start on lower rates of maize silage Colostrum cows offer maize at 1-2kg DM/cow/day more than to springers Milking cows offer maize at an additional 1-2kg DM/cow more than to colostrum cows Monitor the maize stack face when feeding silage at lower rates slow feed out increases risk of aerobic spoilage/heating 26 Freephone

27 MINERALS FOR MAIZE SILAGE WHAT IS REQUIRED? Maize silage contains low levels of calcium, sodium and magnesium. Supplementary mineral recommendations are not absolute for all situations, but reflect: 1. Quantity of maize silage offered Feeding maize silage as a higher proportion of the diet increases the need for mineral supplementation 2. Levels of minerals found in other feeds (including pasture) Feeding maize silage with other low mineral feeds increases the requirement for supplementation. E.g. extra sodium is more important when feeding maize plus other low sodium feeds e.g. PKE or inland pastures 3. Maize silage for different stock classes Lactating dairy and beef cows can need calcium, sodium and magnesium Springer cows only need magnesium Finishing beef cattle need sodium and sometimes calcium Contact your Corson Maize Seed representative, a nutritionist or veterinarian for mineral recommendations specific to the feeding situation. COMMON ADDITIVES FOR MAIZE SILAGE Calcium (Ca)= Limeflour (35% Ca) Sodium (Na) = Salt (39% Na) or sodium bicarbonate (27% Na) Magnesium (Mg) = As magnesium oxide (52% Mg), chloride (12% Mg) or sulphate (10% Mg) PGG Wrightson Seeds. 27
