1 SPONSORSHIP PROPOSAL 2018

2 letter from Chair Sprout Tasmania is a unique non-profit organisation set up in 2011 to foster and support the state s start-up growers and producers. We are Tasmania s only grassroots group helping aspiring farmers turn their ideas into thriving, sustainable small businesses. Over the past seven years, Sprout has supported the success of a wide variety of entrepreneurs, from all walks of life and all over the state. Education Sprout provides real-world learning, opportunities and networks. Our program is practical, useful and successful. Backed by a wealth of expertise, Sprout s board of directors and many volunteer supporters provide a year-round calendar of events for small producers and growers to connect, learn and grow. Sprout is proud to partner with the best in the food business to share know-how and experiences, to expedite our members business success and build a strong, flourishing small producer sector. Advocacy Sprout works hard to connect small growers with consumers including retailers, restaurants and markets. We are proud of the state s growing food scene and want it to boast the very best of sustainable local produce. Educating and encouraging consumers to buy local is win-win for our economy, our health, our environment and our community. Sprout believes that a thriving small producer sector is vital to Tasmania s prosperity and wellbeing. Agriculture is a strong contributor to Tasmania s economy but is underdeveloped at the micro-enterprise level. We require engagement across the community and active support from industry leaders to maximise our natural advantages and harness the increasing local, national and international interest in both buying local and being local! Hannah Martin Chair, Sprout Tasmania We are passionate about Tasmania s small growers and producers and giving them the skills to get off the ground and into a receptive market. 2 SPROUT SPONSORsHIP PROPOSAL 2018

4 EVENTS and PROGRAMS Cross Pollinate Sprout s annual day-long conference is hugely popular with more than 100 small-scale producers attending in The conference provides workshops, panel discussion, a farm tour, round table discussions, networking and an opportunity to showcase local produce. The workshops cover important topics such as packaging and labelling, soil health, business planning and organic conversion. Cross Pollinate is always a rewarding, inspiring day with lots of take home lessons. Small Producer Award Sprout Producer Program The Sprout Producer Program (SPP) is a unique one-year accreditation program for small Tasmanian producers, farming ethically and sustainably. Applications are accepted from August each year. The hands-on program involves a series of educational units, farm field days, networking opportunities and mentoring sessions over 12-months to support and develop our course participants to achieve their goals, creating significant individual and community benefit. SPP is for any small producer growing food to sell fresh or value-add or farming stock of any kind, and at any stage in their business evolution. The scholarship recipients are a diverse bunch, from those deciding what crop to grow to those diversifying their products or overhauling their business entirely. This broad mix sees participants learn not only from the Sprout Producer Program but from each other, with exposure to a range of opportunities and challenges observed on other farms throughout the year. Much can be learned from other scholarship holders, even if they have different measures of success. 4 SPROUT SPONSORsHIP PROPOSAL 2018 Sprout coordinates an annual communitynominated award for the best Tasmanian small producer in recognition of effort, ingenuity, innovation and leadership. The award is presented at Sprout s popular annual conference Cross Pollinate. Dining Series Sprout hosts a small series of culinary experiences where a local chef is paired with local producers and their product. Guests hear the paddock to plate story direct from the producer and pick up some kitchen tips for making the most of seasonal local produce. The dining events are held on farm or close to the grower to support our regional communities.

5 OUR SUCCESS STORIES Lisa Britzman & David Peck Campo de Flori (SPP 2017, graduate) We know we would have been lost without Sprout this year and they have helped to turn our farm around and we believe we have accomplished the goals we had in mind when we came to Sprout a year ago and that Campo de Flori may now have a bright future. Most importantly it has given us the confidence that we need to move forward. The outcome Lisa and David had their first year selling their own saffron and culinary lavender under the Campo de Flori brand, and sold out of both crops! They have also formed incredible collaborative arrangements with those from their region in Huonville and internationally as well. Hermione Hickling Longley Organic Farm (SPP 2017, graduate) We have gained confidence, networks and skills to take our business to the next level! Their (Sprout s) model is highly effective; I think they are a much needed support for the small farm sector in Tasmania. The outcome Hermione had a great year, finessing on-farm processes, launching a farm tools and knowledge business for market gardeners, and is now working full time on the farm! Trish MacFarlane Three Peaks Organics (SPP 2015, graduate) I want people to know how important Sprout and the Spout Producers Program is for small producers. It gives us a voice (sometimes when we have lost our own) and the ability to build relationships with many different people across many different spectrums of business, from farming to accounting, soil, water, product diversification, markets, branding, etc. It is the entire reason our farm is where it is today as it has pointed us in the right direction after having been completely pulled apart piece by piece on our field day (all those years ago) and to then be completely refocused and rebuilt. If it was not for the ongoing support and guidance from Sprout that many of us have, we may well have closed our doors by now. The outcome Trish now sells her certified organic blueberries into local Tasmanian markets, as well as interstate and internationally to Hong Kong with roaring success! SPROUT SPONSORsHIP PROPOSAL
