Research Strategies for Biosecurity and Biodiversity Up date - July 2017 Richard Bowman BioManagers Group
Communities are Drivers People are realising the loss of native habitat and species is pervasive and on-going. Green is the new black. There are hundreds of community restoration projects nationwide. Community groups are a powerful driver for biodiversity protection and enhancement.
What do Regional Councils need now? New and better tools and techniques for: Small mammal control possums, rodents, mustelids, feral cats (PF2050) Weed control environmental and economic Wilding conifers Detection and surveillance of pests/weeds Monitoring of pest/weed impacts and efficacy of management Understanding biodiversity values Habitat restoration Facilitating and supporting community action
Strategic roadmap for biosecurity and biodiversity research Commissioned by the BioManagers Group in 2014 Launched in Feb 2015 Funded by Envirolink Advice Grant ESRC265 Authors Andrea E. Byrom Landcare Research Matt Kavermann Independent Aim to strategically promote Biosecurity and Biodiversity research i.e., National Science Challenge, PF 2050, etc.
Common Overarching Goals Halt and reverse the decline of native biodiversity. Reduce land-use and invasive-species impacts in freshwater and marine ecosystems. Ensure integrity of ecosystem services and natural capital. Improve environmental outcomes through increased community awareness. Anticipate and plan for future risks.
Recommended priority research areas (in no particular order) Scaling up: landscapes and seascapes Ecological monitoring and reporting Surveillance and detection Novel tools, tactics and strategies for pest and weed control, and Improvement of existing tools, tactics and strategies Pathway analysis Data management Social science and citizen science Risk analysis and prioritisation Ecosystem services and valuation of natural assets Modelling to predict future scenarios and risks

What has happened since 2015? Roadmap has allowed Regional Councils to inform and support Biological Heritage NSC projects and related MBIE bids, e.g., Wasps novel control methods Bio collection data bases edna Biosecurity networks - pathways Mobile device technology citizen science Hi tech solutions for small mammal predators Genetic based population suppression gene drive Possum specific toxins Lures for stoats Biosensors Winning against wildings Supercharging PFNZ 2050 landscape scale (F) War on weeds(f)
Regional Councils Role Regional Councils are now recognised as a key B&B research-user group positioned to collaborate, partner and fund. BioManagers has allocated $20K for co-funding RC B&B research needs applied, practical, urgent cf. step change/ blue skies Input by RCs through End-user Advisory Panels in setting priorities and initial projects But EAP s disbanded and new end-user advice will be applied now to each project.
Current Issues End-user advice after EAPs? Can end-user input be more focussed? Information availability for scanning? Need for knowledge brokers? Cross SIG opportunities? Need to share roadmaps How can RCs increase leverage/influence more co-funding, partnerships, etc?
The Roadmap where to next? Ready for the first 3 year review in 2018 A more refined/detailed map Intermediate outcomes Respond to changes in the environment, i.e., BioHeritage, MBIE, PF2050,etc Cross SIG collaboration/partnership Share roadmaps New issues? Wallaby an emerging national problem Marine pests Ecosystem Services
